Chapter 1

The Problem and Its Settings

Introduction

People are incredible so we should give adolescents an opportunity to have a proper knowledge of

their own talents and capabilities. To achieve this goal, we need to help adolescents overcome depression

that will come sooner or later. Students can’t manifest their talents and capabilities if they are depressed.

Depression can destroy lives and future, so students should know how to prevent and deal with

depression. Depression has been a problem for a long time. We need to put an end to this life threating

stress and in order to help the young people, we need to give them a prior knowledge regarding

depression. Give them a word of encouragement and hope, for them to overcome any kind of troubles in

their minds. There is a lot of different effects when a person is under depression, it could bring

unreasonable anger to other people, headache, easily irritated, loss of appetite, suicidal attempt, and

harming others to satisfy one’s self. Experiencing depression is a cruel thing, trying to endure it alone

might result into loss of self-esteem and will eventually break the person’s mentality. Depression is

mostly caused by other people and that being said, we should start by avoiding any kind of abuse that

might cause depression in order to reduce the uprising victims of depression. Being able to escape or

overcome depression is a great experience for the youth, because they will be able to fight against any

kind of problems ahead of their lives in the future. Doing so will have a higher possibility for them to have

a quality and healthy life style.

Statement of the Problem

The researcher attempts to find out the awareness of BCS students about depression.

Specifically, it attempts to answer the following questions:

1. How are the students describe in terms of:

A. Age B. Gender

2. Why do students need to be aware of depression?

3. Do the students’ perspective toward depression differ in terms of age?

4. Do the students’ perspective toward depression differ in terms of gender?

5. Are the respondents’ perspective about depression dependent to their current mental state?

Hypothesis

There is no significant difference in the perspective of respondents in terms of age.

There is no significant difference in the perspective of respondents in terms of gender

Significance of the Study

This study helps to give information about depression among high school students. The people

who will benefit from this study are the following:

Students. They will likely resolve their own true talents and capabilities by knowing what and how to

prevent depression.

Parents. This can help to ensure their children’s futures and will know if their children is under

depression which can be settle earlier.

Other researches. This study can serve as a basis for other’s researches.

Scope and Delimitation

The objective of this study is to help students prevent depression and to make them more

productive and creative individual. The goal of this study is to make awareness about depression to

students and how to prevent this. This study only answers why we should let the students know about

the effects and causes of depression. It also gives reasons and advantages why we should focus more on

effects and causes of depression. This will help students to have a brighter future in their life and that will

help our world to be a better place.

The respondents of this research study are the Senior High School Students for S.Y. 2018-2019, out

of 100 Senior High School students. Using the Yamanes formula, the researcher decided to take 100

respondents from the SHS Students.
