Answers
(1) b. 3:50

Step 1
If we look at the table carefully, we notice that time difference between consecutive tours is 30
minutes.
Tour Time
1st 0:50
2nd 1:20
3rd 1:50
4th 2:20

Step 2

Since, the difference between the 4th tour and 7th tour = 7th - 4 th = 3 tours
Therefore, the time duration from 4 th tour to 7 th tour = 3 × 30 = 90 minutes.

Step 3

Now, the time of 7th tour = Time of 4 th tour + 90 minutes

= 2:20 + 90 minutes
= 3:50

Step 4
Hence, option b is the correct answer.

(2) A) c. y = -4

Step 1
Let us solve the given equation for the variable y.
-2(2y - 3) -2(3y - 3) = -3y + 40
⇒ -4y + 6 -6y + 6 = -3y + 40
⇒ -10y + 12 = -3y + 40
⇒ -7y = 28
28
⇒y=
-7
⇒ y = -4

Step 2
Hence, option c is the correct answer.

B) b. z = -3

Step 1
Let us solve the given equation for the variable z.
-4(2z - 1) -3( -4z + 4) = -4(z + 8)
⇒ -8z + 4 + 12z - 12 = -4z - 32
⇒ 4z - 8 = -4z - 32
⇒ 8z = -24
-24
⇒z=
8
⇒ z = -3

Step 2
Hence, option b is the correct answer.

(3) 426

Step 1

According to the question, the radius of the smaller circle is 3 cm, 4 cm, 2 cm, and 5 cm,
respectively.
Area of a circle = πr 2
Now, the area of the smaller circles = π(3)2 + π(4) 2 + π(2) 2 + π(5) 2
= π(32 + 42 + 22 + 52)
= 3(9 + 16 + 4 + 25)
= 3(54)
= 162 cm2

Step 2
Radius of the larger circle is equal to the sum of the radius of the smaller circles.
Area of the larger circle = πR 2
= π(142)
= 3(196)
= 588 cm2

Step 3
Area of the shaded region = Area of the larger circle - Area of the smaller circles
= 588 - 162
= 426 cm2

Step 4

Area of the shaded region is 426 cm2.

(4) 10

Step 1

If we notice the 1st and the 2nd picture, it can be seen that the number in the center is the sum of
the other four numbers.
11 + 14 + 12 + 9 = 46 and 17 + 13 + 9 + 15 = 54

Step 2

Therefore, the 3 rd picture should also follow this pattern,

7 + ? + 14 + 9 = 40
⇒ ? = 40 - 30
⇒ ? = 10

(5) 0.001

Step 1
The smallest one digit number is 1. Since we can't count all zeros used in left hand side of any
number, therefore the smallest possible 3 digit number is 001

Step 2
To find out the smallest possible decimal number upto 3 decimal places, we have to place the
decimal at the 3rd place from the right hand side in the smallest possible 3 digit number.

Step 3
So the smallest possible decimal number upto 3 decimal places is 0.001.

(6) 78°

Step 1

In ΔABC,
AB = AD = DC and ∠BAD = 44°

Step 2
Since, AB = AD.
ΔABD is an isosceles triangle.
Similarly, since AD = DC.
ΔADC is an isosceles triangle.

ID : U-218137-1182-9378-Olympiad [7]
Step 3
We know that in an isosceles triangle, the angles opposite the equal sides are also equal.
Therefore, ∠ABD = ∠ADB
and ∠ACD = ∠CAD.

Step 4
In ΔABD,
∠ABD + ∠ADB + 44° = 180° ...(The sum of all the angles of a triangle is 180°)
⇒ 2∠ADB = 180° - 44°
⇒ 2∠ADB = 136°
136°
⇒ ∠ADB = = 68°
2

Step 5
Now, ∠ADB + ∠ADC = 180° ...(Sum of a linear pair is 180°)
⇒ 68° + ∠ADC = 180°
⇒ ∠ADC = 180° - 68°
⇒ ∠ADC = 112°

Step 6
In ΔADC,
∠ADC + ∠ACD + ∠CAD = 180°...(The sum of all the angles of a triangle is 180°]
⇒ 112° + ∠CAD + ∠CAD = 180°
⇒ 2∠CAD = 180° - 112°
⇒ 2∠CAD = 68°
68°
⇒ ∠CAD =
2
⇒ ∠CAD = 34°

Step 7
Therefore, ∠BAC = ∠BAD + ∠CAD = 44° + 34° = 78°.

n3

Step 1

It is given that there are n numbers of which one is and all the others are 1's.

Therefore, the numbers are , 1, 1, 1 …… (where n is the total number of numbers

in the series)

Step 2

Out of n numbers one is and remaining n-1 numbers are 1.

Therefore, the sum of n-1 numbers is n-1.

1 1
Now, the sum of all numbers in the series = n-1 + (1 - )=n-
n2 n2

Step 3
Sum of the all numbers
Now, the arithmetic mean of the numbers =
n

1
n-
= n2

n 1
= -
n n3
1
=1-
n3

Step 4
1
Thus, we can say that the arithmetic mean of these numbers is less than 1.

Step 1
Rules of the exponent:
Rule 1: When we multiply any two numbers with the same base, we add the exponents.
Rule 2: When we divide any two numbers with the same base, we subtract the exponents.
Rule 3: When we have an exponent expression that is raised to a power, we can multiply the
exponent and the power.
1
Rule 4: (x)-n can be written as
(x)n
Rule 5: If, (y)x = (y)10 then we can write x = 10.

Step 2
Now

[{( ) x} 2 ] 2 =
2 16

2 (2)4

⇒( ) 4x =
2 (2)4
1 1
⇒( ) 4x = ( )4
2 2
⇒ 4x = 4
⇒x=1

Step 3
Hence, the value of x is 1 .

Step 1
The minute hand makes one full revolution every one hour. Therefore, it will make 12 revolutions
in a period of 12 hours.

Step 2
During each revolution, the minute hand crosses the hour hand once. Therefore, if the hour hand
remains fixed, it would cross the hour hand 12 times.

Step 3
But the hour hand does not remain fixed and makes one full revolution in 12 hours. This means,
the total numbers of crossings made by the minute hand will be 1 less than the number of
revolutions made by it. Therefore, the total numbers of crossings will be 11.

Step 4
For example, if we start at 12 midnight, the two hands will meet at: (approximately)
12 AM
1:05 AM
2:10 AM
3:16 AM
4:22 AM
5:27 AM
6:33 AM
7:38 AM
8:43 AM
9:48 AM

Step 1
We have to maximize the numbers of squares that can be created with a given length of wire.
Therefore, we need to keep the size of squares as small as possible.

Step 2
It is given that each side of the square has to be an integer (i.e. it cannot be 0.5m, 0.8m etc.),
therefore the least possible length of the side can be 1 m.

Step 3
Perimeter of a square with each side of 1 m = 4 × 1 = 4 m.

Step 4
Since, 4 m wire is needed for 1 square.
80
Therefore, number of squares that can be created with 80 m = = 20
4

Step 5
We can create maximum 20 squares by folding the given wire.
