Math
In math we learned new games to help us practice our math facts. We also talked about near doubles. For example: if you are solving 5+6 and you know the doubles fact 5 + 5= 10 then 5 + 6 is just one more. I know this is a lot of thinking for some, but if you know your doubles, this can really increase speed and accuracy. Last Friday, I was in a training to learn about the new Federal English Language Arts Standards. One item that is mandated is the increase in reading and responding to non-fiction text. Even though the standards do not take effect until 2012, Spencerport is asking to begin implementing the changes. This week in shared reading we read a few nonfiction books about spiders. I heard lots of OOOOs and a few EEEEks. We practiced answering questions that required us to go back to the text to find the answer. We created a Venn diagram comparing the spider and insects. Finally, we talked about adjectives and made a Spider Sandwich Poem.
Harvest Celebration
Mrs. Marsh, Mrs. Hunter and I got together for a harvest celebration today. We split up into three groups for an activity. Each student will rotate through each lesson. Look for pictures on the blog this weekend.
