Inside Caliper 1

The document discusses hacksaw blades, saw blades, files, and cold forming. It provides details on: 1) The meaning of a 24 tooth hacksaw blade and its appropriate uses. 2) The recommended procedure if a saw blade breaks or becomes dull during a cut, which is to start cutting from the other side rather than working through the old cut. 3) The purpose of single-cut and double-cut files, which are used for sharpening instruments and removing material, respectively. 4) The commonly used degrees of coarseness for files, ranging from rough cut to dead smooth. 5) Important aspects of file care like avoiding hammering, storing in a dry place

QUESTIONS

1. What is the meaning of 24 teeth hack saw blade? The blade of the hacksaw has 24 teeth per inch
(TPI). The greater the TPI, the lower the toothgap and the shorter the tooth. 24 Teeth hack saw can
be used to cut metals of at least 1.1 mmand to cut metals of average thickness.

2. What is the procedure is recommended if a saw blade breaks or becomes dull in apartially
finished cut?Rather than trying to work through the old, it is best to start the cut from the other
hand. Shesaw cut. The cut is slightly smaller than the fresh blade, and the set of teeth is probable to
bedamaged and the fresh blade damaged when working down the ancient cut.

3. Describe and state the purpose of:

a. Single-cut filesIt is a file that has across its face a single parallel sequence of diagonal cuts. Its
use is to sharpen instruments, complete and draw filling files and are the finest instruments to
efficiently smooth edges for sheet metals.

b. Double-cut filesThese files consist of multiple rows of diamond-shaped teeth that are
crisscrossed. The first row of teeth is called the overcut. The second set of teeth is cut at a distinct
angle to the file axis, which is known as the upcut and is finer. These files are known for rough work
and is efficient in removing material which is the reason the term Machinists Files is given to these
files.

4. Name the most commonly used degrees of coarseness in which files are
manufactured?Coarseness is the file length amount of teeth per inch. No specific amount of teeth
reflects a degree of coarseness as the amount of teeth is proportional to the length of the file for a
specified coarseness.

Rough Cut, 20 teeth per inch (TPI).

Bastard cut – 30 teeth per inch (TPI).

Second cut – 40 teeth per inch (TPI).

Smooth Cut – 50-60 teeth per inch (TPI).

Dead Smooth – 100 or more teeth per inch (TPI).The more teeth per inch a file has, the smoother the
finish you can achieve.

5. List four important aspects of file care.

A. Never use files as a hammer.

B. Store the files in a dry place, rust will corrode the teeth of the file.

C. Apply pressure only on the forward stroke when filling. Pressure on the return stroke will dull the
file.

D. Use a steel brush or file card to loosen the accumulated filling between the teeth of the file.

6. How can pinning of a file be kept to a minimum?

Too much pressure causes material shavings to accumulate between the file's teeth, the material
shavings would be difficult to stick to the file's teeth by applying a powder chalk.

7. What is cold forming?

It is a high-speed forging process where coiled wire at room temperature is precisely sheared to
length, and then moved through a succession of tool and die cavities to displace the working metal.
This is done in either larger/smaller in diameter, longer/shorter in length, or toremove small
amounts of material by trimming or piercing.

8. Why is there a need of adjusting the blade tension of a hacksaw?

Most hacksaws offer you the capacity to adjust their tension to suit your cutting requirementsand
even after you get the correct sort of blade for your work, using the correct tension will help you
leverage your hacksaw's strength.
