Prepositions
Prepositions can be categorised according to the case required or by meaning.

Classification by the case required

In answer to the question "where?” (where is something located? where is something moving?), the noun
after the preposition is in the dative.

Verbs which denote position:

liegen (= to lie)
stehen (= to stand)
sitzen (= to sit)
hängen (= to hang)
stecken (= to stick)

Wo liegt die Zeitung? – Auf dem Tisch. = Where is the newspaper? – On the
table.

Wo steht der Koffer? – Hinter dem Schrank. = Where is the suitcase? – Behind the
cupboard.

Wo sitzt deine Freundin? – Vor der Dame = Where is your girlfriend sitting? – In
da. front of the lady.

Wo geht ihr am liebsten spazieren? – Im (in = Where do you like to go walking? – In

+ dem) Wald. the woods.

Das Geschirr steht auf dem Tisch. = The cuttlery is on the table.

Die Messer liegen hinter dem Herd. = The knives are next to the hob.

Die Schuhe liegen unter dem Bett. = The shoes are under the bed.

Die Weinflaschen stehen neben dem = The wine bottles are next to the bin.

Blumen stehen vor dem Fenster. = Flowers are in front of the window.

Zwischen Büchern liegen Socken. = Socks are lying between books.

Über dem Spiegel kleben Kaugummis. = Chewing gum is stuck above the mirror.

An der Wand hängt der Spiegel. = The mirror is hanging on the wall.

Wohin legst du die Zeitung? – Auf den = Where are you laying the newspaper? - On
Tisch. the table.

Wohin stellst du den Koffer? – Hinter den = Where are you placing the suitcase? -
Schrank. Behind the cupboard.

Wohin setzt sich deine Freundin? – Vor = Where is your girlfriend sitting? - In front of
die Dame da. the lady.

Wohin geht ihr heute spazieren? – In den = Where are you going walking today? - Into
Wald. the forest.

Das Bett kommt in die Ecke. = The bed goes in the corner.

Der Kasten kommt neben das Bett. = The box goes next to the bed.

Den Schreibtisch stellen wir vor das = We will place the desk in front of the
Fenster. window.

Diese Lampe stellen wir auf den = We will place this lamp on the desk.

Möchtest du den Teppich unter den = Would you like to lay the carpet under the

Den Spiegel hängen wir an die Wand. = We hang the mirror on the wall.

Über den Spiegel hängen wir die Uhr. = We hang the clock above the mirror.

Biegen Sie in die Herrengasse ab. = Turn into Herrengasse.

I live opposite the park.

Am besten tankst du bei der Tankstelle dem Freizeitzentrum gegenüber.
It would be best for you to fuel up at the petrol station opposite the leisure center.

In phrases of direction involving names of countries which include the definite article, the preposition 'in' is
used with the accusative.

Ich fliege in die Türkei. = I fly to Turkey.

Ich fliege in die USA. = I fly to the USA.

Ich fliege in die Schweiz. = I am flying to Switzerland.

Prepositions of time

from the future I will not smoke any more from today on.
Ab November arbeite ich am nächsten

von with 'until' von 8.00 Uhr bis 10.00 Uhr

from from 8 o'clock until 10 o'clock
Von Montag bis Freitag bin ich an der Uni.

'von' with surnames

'Von' with surnames indicates possession or origin of things or people.

Thomas Mayr ist der Vater von Hana, Laura = Thomas Mayr is the father of Hana,
und Niklas. Laura and Niklas.

Jolana Mayr ist die Mutter von Hana, Laura = Jolana Mayr is the mother of Hana,
und Niklas. Laura and Niklas.

Das ist die Bluse von Katrin. = That is Katrin's blouse.

Das ist das Bild von Botticcelii. = That is the photo of Botticcelii.
