Rail Waybill

Rail Waybill or Manifest is important rail transportation document which works as contract of
carriage between rail and the shipper of the cargo. It contains basic details regarding the shipment
like receiver’s name and address, place to deliver, route and nature of cargo etc. Rail Waybill is
just like ocean bill of lading which holds characteristic features such as non-negotiability. It is a
document in which shipper or consignee nominates the rail to deliver the goods from one place to
another. Its main function is to act as an agreement between two parties to facilitate the
transportation of goods. The main functions of Rail Waybill can be explained below: -

a) Contract:
Waybill act as contract between sender and transporter i.e. railway administrator. It binds
both parties to follow the laws regarding the shipment of goods. In addition, detailed
information in the waybill also provides record of transfer of goods from shipper to railway.
b) Proof of shipment:
Waybill act as important piece of evidence for the transportation of goods. It serves as
verification that good has been transferred by shipper to railway administrator. It confirms
that the shipment has been given to carrier in good condition.
c) Documentation of goods:
Waybill provides clear information about quantity, nature, and other description of goods
that are being transported such as weight, nature of packaging etc. which can result in
efficient handling of cargo being transported. Documentation of goods in waybill can also
come handy during custom clearance.
d) Instructions:
Waybill also acts as a document which instruct carrier (railway) to transport the goods in
right condition. It also contains instructions on how to handle and carry goods such as
cooling specifications, and other safety warnings if transported goods are hazardous.
e) Basis for payment:
Detailed information such as value of shipment, freight rates and other necessary charges
mentioned on waybill also help during payment of transportation. The receiver can also
confirm the charges by comparing terms in waybill and received receipt.
