Motivation *

Why are you applying for this particular programme? (max 600 characters)
To gain in-depth knowledge, expertise and confidence so that I can face the challenge of water
threat in my region using sustainable methods, considering the 2030’s agenda for sustainable
development goals is fast approaching. This will afford me the opportunity to engage with the
most prestigious water professional's networks in the world, which helps to build a resilient
community living in a healthy environment, and to connect with the greatest water professional’s
network in the world.

To gain in-depth knowledge and skills to understand the several concepts and approaches
towards the fulfilment of the sustainable design goals (SDGs) in the construction and building
sector. This will afford me the opportunity to engage with professional expertise networks on
greening the construction sector.

Specific challenges *
What are the specific challenges, issues or problems (in your country, region or worldwide) that
you plan to address once you have completed this programme? (max 1000 characters)
The Komadugu-Yobe basin was once one of the most important sources of income for the
majority of people in Northern Yobe State, Nigeria. The basin was a major source of fish, rice,
and vegetables for the state, neighboring state and Niger Republic states. However, water
scarcity, poor fishing activities, poor agricultural harvests, threats to human health, poverty, and
environmental hazards have exposed the basin's vulnerability to both global climate change and
poor basin management. Nigeria is one of the West African countries dealing with a variety of
environmental issues, including water, lead exposure on land, poor waste management,
deforestation, desertification, and flooding, all of which have harmed the population. The
majority of waterways are recognized by material transporters as gutters, and the quality of river
water has been affected by the flow of wastes from which cause due to inappropriate waste
dumping from communities and increase waterborne infections. The increased rate of waterborne
disease caused a high mortality rate in my region (Gashua, Yobe State, Nigeria). Not less than
150 people died in Gashua and its environs as a result of chronic kidney disease caused by poor
sanitation, Some part of the community are filthy due to residents' lack of concern for sanitation.
If the problem persists, communities like Gashua may prevent Nigeria from achieving the six
sustainable development goals.
Adamu was born and brought up in one of Nigeria's filthiest areas and personally witnessed the
detrimental effects pollution had on my society, our way of life, and the environment. The

Impact of this Academic programme on the development of your main

activity/education/carreer?
This programme will offer a learning outcome for me to gain skills and confidence to contribute
to the implementation of new technologies with high concern for sustainability and life cycle
approaches. The programme will also provide me with a comprehensive set of competences that
will enable me to carryout an analytic and operational work in several expertise field.

Applying gained knowledge *

How will this programme enable you to address above-mentioned challenges, issues or
problems? (max 1000 characters)
As I return home after having had the opportunity to study with a scholarship, I intend to use my
alumni network, technical expertise and leadership skills to work collaboratively with
International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs) such as the European Union, Mercy
Corps, the United Nations (UN), Zoa International, Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC),
Catholic Relief Services (CRS), Water Aid, and local base organizations or governments to
enhance sustainable projects in the country (Nigeria), particularly in the Northeast part of the
country where the aforementioned charity organizations are currently functional due to conflict
caused by non-state armed groups (NSAGs), the conflict brought about refugee camps, such
massive displacement result in temporary settlements often bring a lack of appropriate sanitation
and hygiene measures, leading to outbreaks of water-borne and vector borne diseases.

As I returned home, I will explore opportunities in my nation’s leading construction from such as
Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Reynolds Construction Company, Setraco Nigeria Limited or Federal
Government to enhance on highly sustainable project in the country.

Qualifications *44
What are your most relevant qualifications and experiences that make you a suitable candidate
for this programme? (max 1000 characters)

I am from Nigeria's Northeast. Some of the current highlights associated with environmental
pollution in the northern region of the nation are as follows: - According to a report by the
United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), nearly one-third of
Nigerian children do not have adequate water to meet their daily needs. - Exposure to heavy
metals like cadmium, lead, and chromium in agricultural soil, which result in serious health
issues such as kidney failure. - Yearly basis floods that destroy infrastructure and farmland. -
Poor attitude toward hygienic practices. In addition to the reports mentioned above, I was indeed
motivated to seek an immediate solution because I was raised in one of Nigeria's filthiest areas
and personally witnessed the detrimental effects pollution had on my society, our way of life,
and the environment. According to statistical data and reports from the World Health
Organization (WHO), the World Bank, and other intervention agencies, pollution in my country
and society had reached pandemic proportions. This fueled my ambition to major in Civil and
Water Resources Engineering and driven my desire to save the environment. I was accepted into
the University of Maiduguri in 2014. I accomplished a final-year research project on water
quality analysis, acquiring samples of groundwater sources in Gashua, Nigeria. Based on the
results of the study conducted at the University under the guidance of Prof. John Ohu, the water
samples had higher concentrations of total dissolved solids, turbidity, and color than authorized
by WHO standards. After completing my studies at the university, I took part in extracurricular
and co-curricular activities. In my first month of employment with Catholic Relief Services
(CRS), I worked as a WASH Technical II. I was given the opportunity to lead the Technical
Aspects team, which entails prototype design, computational calculations, and the preparation of
a BOQ for the rehabilitation of water supply infrastructure that complies with industry standards
and cluster quality standards. Additionally, I've also volunteered for an Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) of Nigeria horticultural project. I finished my volunteer work as an environmental
engineer at the Nigerian Forestry Research Institute (FRIN). My professional background and
leadership influence have attracted my curiosity in pursuing postgraduate studies and acquiring a
broader skill set, which will enable me to join the largest network of experts in the water sector
worldwide in order to improve the world's a better place.

Future career *
Where do you see yourself 5 years after you have graduated? (max 1000 characters)
This program would be a continuation of my previous academic career and would provide a solid
foundation for me to achieve my career objectives. Upon completion of the Master's program. I
intend to acquire firsthand experience in the field, which will provide me with a comprehensive
and detailed understanding of the challenges it faces. Later, I intend to pursue a PhD and work in
research to address water and waste issues.
Please tell us how you think participating in this matter will be life-changing?
Studying Master aboard will be a life-changer, as it will shape my knowledge and experience
that will empower me to switch from my current research-based approach to a modern
construction technologies with high concern for sustainability that will have much more impact
in solving building and construction sector. I look up to the scholarship because I want to use the
opportunity of meeting the scholarship community and other people, I will meet during my study
abroad to build a greater network that will help me achieve my career and construction
aspirations.
