Friends, the Nobel Committee has generously invited me to present a “lecture.” Respectfully, I am
unable to do that. Because, I am representing here - the sound of silence. The cry of innocence. And, the
face of invisibility. I represent millions of those
children who are left behind and that’s why I have kept an empty chair here as a reminder.
I have come here only to share the voices and dreams of our children - because they are all our
children - (gesture to everyone in the audience). I have looked into their frightened and exhausted eyes. I
have held their injured bodies and felt their broken
spirits.
Twenty years ago, in the foothills of the Himalayas, I met a small, skinny child labourer. He asked me:
“Is the world so poor that it cannot give me a toy and a book, instead of forcing me to take a gun or a tool?”
I met with a Sudanese child-soldier. He was kidnapped by an extremist militia. As his first training
lesson, he was forced to kill his friends and family. He asked me: “What is my fault?”
Friends, all the great religions teach us to care for our children. Jesus said: “Let the children come to
me; do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to them.” The Holy Quran says: “Kill not your
children because of poverty.”

Points:
• The title and the poet of the poem (1)
• Rhyme scheme (1)
• Figures of speech (1)
• Central Idea/Theme (2)
Ans. The poem, “All the World’s a Stage” is an analogical part of the monologue of Jacques in William
Shakespeare’s As You Like It according to which the stage is set by the Ultimate Creator, God and we are mere
puppets out to act our roles out as directed by Him. Shakespeare uses the rhythm of iambic pentameter, thus
the poem is composed in free verse. The use of imagery, metaphor, and simile are the strongest figures of
speech used to drive home the message of the extract. Some examples of the figures of speech used include,
“the whining school boy”, “Sighing like a furnace”, “Bearded like the pard”, “round belly”, “beard of formal cut”,
“and his big manly voice’’, ‘‘Turning again towards childish treble”,
The style is narrative while the theme is metaphorical according to which a man generally plays seven
typical parts. Shakespeare starts out with describing the common actions and conditions in which we all find
ourselves as a baby who is dependent on a mother figure, then he moves on to describe what each stage
thereafter looks and acts like in its own time thereby making his way to the end of a person’s life as if it were an
exit from the stage (of life).

It was no common shop this; it was a magic shop. For a moment or so we were alone and could
glance at us. There was a tiger in papier-mâché on the glass case that covered the low counter; there were
several crystal spheres, a China hand holding magic cards, and an immodest magic hat that shamelessly
displayed its springs. On the floor were magic mirrors; one to draw you out long and thin, and one to make
you short and fat; and while we were laughing at these the shopman, as I suppose, came in. There he was
behind the counter- a curious, sallow, dark man, with one ear larger than the other. ‘What can we have the
pleasure?’ he said, spreading his long, magic fingers on the glass case; and so with a start, we were aware
of him. ‘I want,’ I said, ‘to buy my little boy a few simple tricks.’ ‘Legerdemain?’ he asked. ‘Mechanical?
Domestic?’ ‘Anything amusing?’ said I. ‘Um!’ said the shopman, and scratched his head. Then, quite
distinctly, he drew from his head a glass ball. ‘Something in this way?’ he said, and held it out. The action
was unexpected.
