Rnd 10 (here is where we do the earflaps): SC for 18 sts (count 25 stitches for
Toddler through Adult sizes). Ch 1 and turn work. SC 8 sts (SC10 sts for Toddler and
SC12 for Child through adult – this is the width of your earflap). **Ch 1 and turn
work, SC2tog, SC the rest of the row. Repeat from ** until there are 3 st remaining in
your row. SC down the side of the earflap back to the base of the hat and continue
SC all the way until where you started the round.
Rnd 11: (2nd earflap) Ch 1 and turn work. SC 8 sts (SC10 sts for Toddler and SC12 for
Child through adult – this is the width of your earflap). Ch 1 and turn work, SC2tog,
SC the rest of the row. Repeat until there are 3 st remaining in your row. SC down
the side of the earflap back to the base of the hat
Rnd 12: SC all the way around putting 2SC in each “corner” of the two earflaps. I
sometimes do a HDC in lieu of a SC at the tip of each earflap if I want to make them
bigger. Once you work around the second earflap, do a few SS to smooth out the end
of your work before tying off and weaving in the ends. (Do this round once for 4-7
years; repeat twice for 8 years plus, or more, if required)
I sometimes add additional rounds of SC at the end if I misjudge the guage / size of
the hat until it gets to be the desired size. The back of the hat will have the
narrowest gap between ear flaps (you also start each round at the back of the hat).
Ties
I use 9 strands of yarn for each earflap – you can use more (12+ but in multiples of
3) depending on whether they are to be used for actually tying the hat (use 9) or are
for decoration purposes (12+). These will be folded in half and braided so the
thickness of your tie will be double the strand count.
Measure about 1m for each of the 9 or 12+ strands (longer or shorter depending on
preference). Using your crochet hook, pull the ends through the end of the earflap
where you want them to be (I usually spread them out over 3 stitches). Bring the
ends together so they’re even. You now have 18 (or 24+) pieces of yarn. Braid them
all the way to the end, tying a knot at the end. Trim ends to be even. Repeat for
other earflap.
Ears – make 2
Notes
1) Ch 1 and turn work at the end of each row
2) I sometimes use a smaller hook (5mm or 4mm) for smaller hats (up to 12
months) or if I want the ears to be a bit stiffer however a 5.5mm hook works
just fine if you don’t have the full size range of hooks.
Rnd 1-4: Start in second ch from the hook and SC all the way across. Repeat for 4
rows total (20 sts)

Rnd 5: SC2tog at start and end of each row (18 sts)
Rnd 6: SC2tog at start and end of each row (16 sts)
Rnd 7: SC2tog at start and end of each row (14 sts)
Rnd 8: SC2tog at start and end of each row (12 sts)
Rnd 9: SC in every st across (12 sts)
Rnd 10: SC2tog at start and end of each row (10 sts)
Rnd 11: SC in every st across (10 sts)
Rnd 12: SC2tog at start and end of each row (8 sts)
Rnd 13: SC in every st across (8 sts)
Rnd 14: SC2tog at start and end of each row (6 sts)
Rnd 15: SC in every st across (6 sts)
Rnd 16: SC, SC, SC2tog, SC (4 sts)
Rnd 17: SC in every st across (4 sts)
Rnd 18: SC, SC2tog, SC (3 sts)
Rnd 19: SC in every st across (3 sts)
Rnd 20: SC2tog, SC (2 sts)
Rnd 21: SC in every st across (2 sts)
Rnd 22: SC2tog (1 sts)
Rnd 23: SC, ch 1
Rnd 24: SC down outside of ear, across the flat part (to be sewn later) and up the
other side back to the tip
Rnd 25: SS down one side back to where you will sew onto hat. End here
Lay the hat flat with front facing you. Using your yarn needle fold top of ear over
about 4 stitches and sew through both layers of ear onto hat. I prefer putting it
down fairly close to the earflap but it’s all personal preference. Continue sewing ear
on by bunching up parts to make waves inside the ear. VOILA!
