Tutorial On SFD and BMD

1. Draw the bending moment and shear force diagrams for the beam shown in figure Q(1), indicating all salient values. 2. Determine the load P required to make the supports reactions equal for the beam in figure Q(2), and draw the corresponding shear force diagram (SFD) and bending moment diagram (BMD). 3. Draw the SFD and BMD for the beam shown in figure Q(1).

1. For the beam shown in figure Q (1) AB=4; BC=2m;CD=4m; DE=4m and EF= 4m .

Draw the
bending moment and shear force diagrams indicating all the salient values in the diagrams

2. For the Beam Ac shown in figure Q (2), determine the magnitude of load P acting at C,such that
reactions at supports a and B are equal. Draw the SFD and BMD for the beam . Mark all the
salient points and their values in the diagrams. Locate the point of contra flexure, if any

3. Draw the SFD and BMD for the beam shown in figure Q (1)

4. Draw the bending moment and shear force diagram for the beam loaded as shown in Figure
below. Mark the values at the salient points. Determine the point of contra flexure also.
5. A Beam ABCD 10m long is simply supported at A and at C, 8m from A. There ias a
uniformly distributed load of 30kN per metre run between the supports and a
concentrated load of 50kN at B 2m from A and 20kN at D. Draw to scale the shearing
force and bending moment diagram show in all the principal values , position and
magnitude of maximum bending moment and point of contra flexure if any.
6. Figure Q (1) shows a beam 8.5mlong, which rests on, supports 6m apart.

Figure Q (1)
a. Determine the reactions and draw the shearing force and bending
moment diagrams for the given loading. Scales: space 1:100; SF
10mm=20kN; BM 10mm=10kNm.
b. State the maximum positive and negative values of the shearing force and
bending moment and positions of the points of contra-flexure (Using a
graph paper).
7. A cast iron bracket subjected to bending has a cross section of I form with unequal flanges. The total
depth of the section is 280mm and the metal is 40mm thick throughout (web and flanges). The top flange
is 200mm wide and the bottom is 120mm.calculate the position of the neutral axis and determine the
maximum bending moment that should be impose on this section if the tensile stress I the top flange is
not to exceed 16Mpa. What is then the value of the compressive stress in the bottom flange?
8. Figure Q (2) illustrates a under lateral loading. Construct shearing and bending moment diagrams, taking
care to specify the scales used.
