Too much of gaming can cause serious health and brain issues and can also
prove fatal in certain cases. Be it on your smartphone, gaming console or
television set, moderate gaming is considered good for your health. Scientists
predict that the brain becomes active and there are signs of better development
with certain games. However, there are a few games that can be a cause of
concern. Here are such cases that were reported, where the gamer was involved
in murder or ended up with his life at stake. There are known physical and
mental development issues and side effects caused by violent games. Though it
started as a main reason for relaxing or pastime, it has now turned into serious a
money-making business and a career for many. However, it is also sad to know
that the addiction has many of the younger generations hooked to the gaming
console. Personality damage due to violent games is on the rise. Video games

9. What are the top symptoms of excessive gaming? Write a 300 word essay on this.
Ans:
Video games are a fun and entertaining way to relax. They help people who are
isolated to form friends and be a part of a community. There are many stories where
children with developmental issues learn how to interact and be a part of society. It
helps them with brain development and helps them grow in many ways. However,
there is a downside to it, with excessive gaming that can result in addiction. This is an
extreme that we cannot go to as it harms everyone involved. Massive Multiplayer
Online Role-Playing Games play a huge role in players that get addicted to gaming. In
this sort of gaming, the player can create their character and play with others on
quests to get better gear. These are games that one pays for, which means that there is
a waste of money if a person isn’t playing. That, coupled with how enjoyable the
game is, can result in players playing for hours on end. The visuals’ effects and
quality are generally very high in these, which makes game play all the more
captivating. It is difficult for players to reorient themselves when they come back to
the real world. As unique and fun as the games are, this is also a problem that needs to
be addressed. Precisely because the games are so enjoyable that players find it
difficult to disconnect and be a part of the real world. People often find a way to
balance their time to either go to work or school, finish what they have to do, come
home, and spend all their time playing games. Often they think that this is a good
compromise. It is not. It is not healthy to divide life between the two in that manner.
There needs to be a balance where individuals spend time with their family and
friends as well. This can result in isolation in social life and regression in learning
how to function in society. This can result in behavioural issues as well. When
teenagers spend time in this manner, they do not learn the basic skills required to
function in society and to hold jobs.

10. What are the measures you will take as a policy maker in India to prevent gaming
addiction? Write a 300 word essay on this.

Ans: Gaming Disorder is listed in a draft document that remains to be finalised. It’s
significant because the WHO guide is used by doctors to diagnose disease. It lists symptoms
such as impaired control over gaming, increased priority and escalation of gaming despite
negative consequences.

Issue for parents

The problem this creates for parents is that it can confuse healthy enthusiasm and
enjoyment with a clinical disorder. We also need to use these labels carefully so as not to
trivialise other mental health issues.
That said, it does offer helpful language to identify when children stray from
enjoyment and avid gaming into less healthy patterns. While children that won’t stop playing
when it’s dinner time are certainly not suffering from a disorder, parents should keep an eye
on any child who neglects relationships, exercise, school work and personal hygiene in
favour of playing games.

Playing together and staying engaged

It’s important that parents don’t just focus on the individual child exhibiting this
behaviour. My experience is that it’s as much a parenting issue as it is a childhood disorder.
The best way to resolve this in most cases is to encourage parents to be present in the gaming
world of their children.
Play together, help set healthy limits and actively find a variety of activities for
children to consume online. This approach, particularly started at an early age, will keep
gaming safe and sensible for most youngsters.
It’s not easy if you’re not familiar with gaming, but I’ve created succinct weekly
videos to help parents who are worried that their children may be addicted to gaming, that
can be accessed via my Patreon project.
