Extempore Competition Format

1. Preparatory
• An extemporaneous speech competition that provides a platform for participants to
showcase their ability to think critically, organize thoughts coherently, and
communicate effectively on a given topic within a limited time.
• There will be 16 participants for the preliminary round and (no. of participants) for the
final round.
• Topics will be given in relation to the theme of comedy.
• Each participant will be given (time) to prepare before giving the speech.
• The time given for each participant to give the speech about their topic is 5 minutes.

Contestants will be judged on the following criteria:
 Approach/Departure : 20 points
 Appearance Poise/Self-confidence : 20 points
 Voice projection/Inflection : 20 points

 Persuasiveness : 5 points
 Clear presentation of ideas : 10 points
 Solid Message : 15 Points
 Total score = 100
6. Rules and logistic
a. Eligibility:
 The competition is open to ALL Unikop College students.
 Participants must be registered by [closing date].

b. Topics:
 Topics will be drawn randomly, provided by the organizer.
 Topics may cover a range of current affairs, general knowledge, and issues of
societal relevance to be covered in a comedic way.
 Each participant will receive their topic [time] before the speech.
 Topic draw will be conducted in a transparent manner.
 A neutral party or software may be used for randomization.
 Participants cannot exchange topics once drawn.

c. Preparation Time:
 Participants will be given [prep time] to prepare their speech.
 No external materials, notes, or electronic devices are allowed during the
preparation time.

d. Time and Speech Structure:


 Each participant will have 5 minutes to deliver their speech based on their
topics.
 A warning signal (bell sound) will be given [30 seconds/1 minute] before
the end of the allocated time.
 Participants exceeding the time limit may face point deductions or
disqualification.
 After delivering their prepared speech, participants may face a question-and-
answer session. Judges or audience members may ask questions related to
the topic to test the speaker's knowledge and ability to think on their feet.
 For finals, the competition will include an impromptu round, where participants
are given a new topic on the spot and must quickly organize their thoughts
and deliver a coherent speech without any prior preparation
 The speech follows a structured format, often consisting of an introduction,
body, and conclusion. Speakers are expected to present a clear and coherent
argument, provide evidence to support their points, and address the topic
comprehensively
e. Judging Criteria:
 Judging will be based on clarity, organization, content, delivery, and
overall persuasiveness.
 Judges will evaluate the speaker's ability to think on their feet and respond to
the topic effectively.
 Each judge's decision is final.

f. Code of Conduct:
 Participants MUST adhere to ethical standards of speech, avoiding offensive
language or content.
 Sensitive issues which is cultural offensively, political motivated is strictly
PROHIBITED
 Plagiarism is strictly prohibited, and participants found in violation may be
disqualified.

g. Participants’ Attire:
 Participants are expected to dress in a manner appropriate for a formal
speaking engagement.

h. Audience Etiquette:
 The audience is expected to maintain respectful silence during speeches.
 Applause is encouraged after each participant has completed their speech.

i. Tiebreaker:
 In the event of a tie, judges may consider factors such as overall delivery,
creativity, or audience engagement.
 The tiebreaker process will be communicated to participants before the
competition.

j. Disqualification:
 Participants may be disqualified for violating rules, exhibiting unsportsmanlike
conduct, or failing to comply with ethical standards.
