1. A Van de Graaff generator is an electrostatic generator invented by American physicist Robert J. Van de Graaff that uses a moving belt to accumulate charge on a hollow metal sphere. This creates an extremely high electric potential of several million volts. 2. Positive charges are continuously added to the belt from a charging station at the bottom. The belt transfers the charges to the inner surface of the hollow spherical conductor. This increases the potential of the sphere. 3. Van de Graaff generators produce very high voltages but low power, making them useful for nuclear and medical research where high voltage is needed to accelerate charged particles or ions.
