Question 2: (5 marks)
Complete the following statements

i) Air pollution is the most harmful pollution issue because global and not controlled (1 mark)
ii) Hot exhausted gases & very small particulate goes upwards due to low density.
iii) Nitrogen Oxide gases converted by means of photochemical reactions to a solid product of
nitrate
iv) The amount of industrial wastewater could be reduced by: (1 mark)
a. Installation of cooling tower (changing from open circuit to closed circuit cooling).
b. Using the condensate from indirect steam and recycling it to the boiler.
c. Applying the integration and segregation concepts.
d. Avoiding the transformation of any solid to liquid by flushing.
e. Changing the techniques of tanks & pipelines washing
Any 2 are Ok.
v) The concentration of pollutants could be reduced by: (1 mark)

b. Applying Dragging-out concept.
c. Washing of tanks 4 or 5 times.
Any 2 are Ok.
vi) Wastewater sampling are usually needed for: (1 mark)
a. Routine operating data on the overall plant performance;
b. Data that can be used to check the performance of certain unit;
c. Data that can be used to implement proposed new programs;

Page 2 of 4
d. Data needed for reporting regulatory compliance.
Any 2 are Ok.
vii) Grab samples are used when: (1 mark)
a. A snapshot of the wastewater quality at a particular instant of time is desired;
b. The water or wastewater stream is not continuous (e.g., batch discharges or
intermittent flow);
c. The characteristics of the wastewater stream are known to be constant or nearly so;
d. The sample is to be analyzed for analytes whose characteristics are likely to change
significantly with time or due to the composting process (e.g.: dissolved oxygen,
residual chlorine, pH, temperature, oil and grease);
e. Data on maximum/minimum concentrations are desired.
Any 2 are Ok.
while Composite samples are used when:
a. The wastewater stream is continuous;
b. Analytical capabilities are limited;
