Centre of Mass Class Notes Class XIth

The centre of mass of a body or system is the point where its entire mass may be assumed to be concentrated to describe its translational motion. The centre of mass of a system of particles is located at the point where the weighted position vectors of the individual particles sum to zero. For continuous distributions like rods and plates, the centre of mass is given by the formula that integrates the product of the mass and position over the entire body and divides it by the total mass. The velocity of the centre of mass of a system is equal to the sum of the products of the individual particle masses and velocities divided by the total system mass.
