GPS Problem Sheet - 5

Water flows through a channel with a 90° bend, producing a linear velocity profile at the exit. The inlet pressure is p and outlet is atmospheric. The force to hold the bend in place needs to be found. A nozzle discharges a 180° sheet of water jet. The volume flow rate and y-force on the nozzle need to be calculated. Water flows in an open channel past a sluice gate. The horizontal force on the gate per unit width is to be found, assuming steady, incompressible flow with hydrostatic pressure distributions. A slider moves under a liquid jet; its terminal speed needs to be calculated given the kinetic friction coefficient.

Guided Problem Solving - 5

AM2530 Foundations of Fluid Mechanics

1. As shown in Figure 1, water enters a two-dimensional channel of constant width h, with uniform velocity,
U . The channel makes a 90◦ bend that distorts the flow to produce the linear velocity profile shown at
the exit, with Vmax = 2Vmin . The inlet gauge pressure is p, and the outlet is at atmospheric pressure.
Find the force required to hold the bend in place.

2. The nozzle shown in Figure 2 discharges a sheet of water through a 180◦ arc. The water speed is 15 m/s
and the jet thickness is 30 mm at a radial distance of 0.3 m from the centerline of the supply pipe. Find
(a) the volume flow rate of water in the jet sheet
(b) the y-component of force required to hold the nozzle in place.

3. Water in an open channel is held in by a sluice gate. Calculate the horizontal force (per unit width) of
the water on the gate assuming steady, incompressible and inviscid flow. Assume the flow at sections (1)
and (2) to be uniform, and the pressure distributions are hydrostatic. Neglect friction at the bottom of
the channel.

4. A vane/slider assembly moves under the influence of a liquid jet as shown. The coefficient of kinetic
friction for motion of the slider along the surface is µk = 0.30. Calculate the terminal speed of the slider.
