3D PRODUCT DESIGN

Have you ever used any of these gadgets? Do you find these gadgets useful?
Does it make any work easier and faster? or is it just a waste of money and time?
How do you think the design of these gadgets make sense?

Product design is a multidisciplinary process that involves creating and developing

new products or improving existing ones with the aim of meeting specific user
needs, solving problems, and achieving business goals

The process of product design involves much more than just adding visually
appealing elements to an item. It's not simply about making something look nice
and placing it on a store shelf. Instead, product design is a comprehensive and
strategic approach that aims to create meaningful and impactful experiences for
users.

Let's break down the provided statement:

Creating New Products or Improving Existing Ones: Product design encompasses

both the development of entirely new products and the enhancement of existing
ones. This involves considering various aspects such as functionality, user needs,
market trends, and technological advancements.
Not Just Adding Fun Design: Product design goes beyond adding superficial
aesthetics or decorative elements to a product. While aesthetics are important, they
are just one part of the overall design process.

Selling an Experience, Not a Commodity: This is a key concept. Product design is

about crafting an experience for the user, not just providing a physical object. The
goal is to create products that evoke emotions, solve problems, and enhance users'
lives. This experience is what sets a product apart from being a simple commodity.

the four essential phases of product design

CONCEPT DESIGN PROTOTYPE HANDOVER

1 2 3 4

phase 1: conceptualize
At this point, work on understanding what people need, what's popular in the market,
and who their competitors are. Do this to find good chances and spots where
something is missing. After that, in the next step called "coming up with ideas," think
and draw to create different solutions for products. Imagine and talk about lots of
ideas to fix problems or make things better.

phase 2: DESIGN
Now, we're moving forward from what we learned and drew before. We're using special
computer programs to create a 3D model of the idea. We decide on things like the
color, shape, materials, and size of the product. This helps us make it look and work the
right way. We make a 3D version that's almost like the real thing. We think about how
the parts fit together if it's good for the environment, and how it'll be made. This 3D
model is almost ready to become a real prototype. Next, we'll check and test it out
more.
phase 3: PROTOTYPE
This is when we take a big step in turning an idea, a model, and a dream into a real
thing you can touch and use. It's really exciting! Going from earlier steps to something
that you can see and use is amazing for everyone involved.

Making the prototype is a creative process. It means trying different versions. We use
cool technology like 3D printing, CNC machining, or even simple paper to make it. This
helps us see what works best. This step gives us important feedback and checks what
we learned before. Sometimes, the prototype tells us new things and we might need to
change the design. Once we have a prototype that's just right, we give all the
information to the people who will make lots of them. They'll use our design to make
many more just like it.

phase 4: handover
In the last step of making our product, we create papers and computer files that show
exactly how the final thing should be made. These papers help the people who build it
understand what to do. Sometimes, the people who build it give us advice about some
parts of the design, and we might need to change things a bit.
When we finish this part, we give the plans to the people who will actually make the
product. They follow our plans to make the parts and put them together.

the 3d design process

A 3D product design is a way of creating and visualizing objects or products in three
dimensions, which means you can see them from all sides - like how you see things in
the real world. That's what 3D design lets you do on a computer.

Designers use special software to make 3D models, which are like digital versions of the
real thing. These models can show how a product will look and work before it's actually
made. It's a cool way to plan and understand things better!

a 3D design using Tinkercad. through Tinkercad.
what is tinkercad?
Tinkercad is a free, easy-to-use app for 3D design, electronics,
and coding. It's used by teachers, kids, hobbyists, and designers
to imagine, design, and make anything! Users can quickly learn
how to use the Tinkercad software through basic tutorial
lessons that focus on the basics of the Tinkercad tool. Additional
lessons help users create artistic objects of increasing
complexity by tinkering with existing designs, as well as to work
collaboratively to create new designs.

Seal of Alignment Review

Autodesk’s Tinkercad successfully underwent the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Seal of Alignment review for Readiness.
Reviewers determined this resource helps build foundational technology skills needed to support the 2016 ISTE Standards for Students. Tinkercad is a
browser-based 3D design and modeling tool that is part of Autodesk’s 123D toolkit of free applications available online. The Tinkercad resource
provides users with tutorials on how to use the tool as well as additional designs, lessons, and collaborative features to support the extended
application of the tool.

let's get started with tinkercad

Step 1: Set Up Your Tinkercad Account
1. Go to the Tinkercad website (www.tinkercad.com).
2. Sign up for a free account using your school email address or your parent's
email if required.

Step 2: Start a New Design

1. Log in to your Tinkercad account.

2. Click on "Create New Design."

Step 3: Familiarize Yourself with the Tinkercad Interface

1. Tinkercad has a simple interface. You'll see the work plane (the grid where you'll
build your design) and tools on the right.
2. You can drag and drop shapes from the right-hand panel onto the workplane.

Step 4: Adding Shapes

1. Let's start with a basic shape. Drag a cube from the right panel onto the work
plane.
2. You can adjust the size of the cube by clicking and dragging the arrows that
appear around it.
3. Experiment with other shapes like spheres and cylinders by dragging them onto
the work plane.

Step 5: Adjusting and Positioning

1. Click on a shape to select it. You'll see colored arrows that allow you to move,
resize, and rotate the shape.
2. Use the arrows to adjust the position and size of the shape as desired.
3. To rotate, click and drag the colored half-circle on the shape.
Step 6: Combining Shapes
1. You can create more complex designs by combining shapes.
2. Try placing a sphere on top of a cube to make a simple robot head.
3. Select both the cube and sphere, then click "Group" to merge them together.

Step 7: Adding Colors

1. Click on a shape to select it.
2. In the top panel, click on the "Shape" dropdown.
3. Choose a color for your shape. You can also adjust the transparency slider to
make it see-through.
Step 8: Duplicating Shapes
1. To make multiple copies of a shape, select it and click "Duplicate" (two squares
icon) in the top panel.
2. Move the duplicated shape to a new position.

Step 9: Adding Text

1. Click on the "Text" option in the right panel.
2. Type your desired text in the textbox that appears.
3. Resize, rotate, and position the text using the arrows.

Step 10: Saving and Exporting

1. Once you're happy with your design, it's time to save and export it.
2. Click on "Design" in the top left corner, then select "Download for 3D Printing."
3. Choose the file format you want (STL is commonly used), and save it to your
computer.

Congratulations! You've created a simple 3D design using Tinkercad. You can continue
exploring the tool to create more intricate designs and discover new features as you
become more comfortable with it. Have fun experimenting with shapes, colors, and
arrangements!
