Sequential Circuit

Sequential circuits contain memory elements that allow the output to depend on both the present input and previous output. There are two types of sequential circuits: asynchronous circuits operate using pulses and can change state whenever the input changes, while synchronous circuits synchronize the state of memory elements using a clock signal. Synchronous circuits output is stored in latches or flip-flops and only changes on the positive or negative edge of the periodic clock signal.

Sequential circuit is a special type of circuit. It consists of series of various inputs & outputs.

Here, the
output depends on the combination of present input & previous output. Previous output gets treated in
the form of present state. Sequential circuit consists of combinational circuit along with memory storage
element. It do need to consist of combinational circuit all the time. It can only consist of memory
element.

There are two types of sequential circuit;

Asynchronous sequential circuit

Synchronous sequential circuit.

Asynchronous sequential circuit: it does not make the use of clock pulses. This type of circuits are
operated through various pulses. Any changes to the input an easily make the change in state of circuit.
Internal state get altered whenever there is a change in input variable. Clock pulses are not the case of
asynchronous sequential circuit. Time-delay or unlocked flip-flops form the memory elements of
asynchronous sequential circuit. This type of circuit is very similar to that of combinational circuit along
with the feedback.

Synchronous sequential circuit:

Clock signal perform synchronization of the state of memory elements in case of synchronous sequential
circuit. The output in this case is stored in latches or flip-flops. The output gets synchronized with the
clock’s only positive edges or only negative edges.

Clock signals are the periodic signal where ON & OFF time need not to be the same. If it happens to be
the same we use square waves to represent clock signal.s
