Introduction

Introduction
The Storage Center Charting Viewer is a stand‐alone application that displays IO
performance statistics for a Storage Center and its associated volumes, servers, remote
Storage Centers, disks, and controllers.

Note: The data displayed in the Storage Center Charting Viewer is gathered every
10 seconds.

Charting Viewer Requirements

The Storage Center Charting Viewer has the following operating system and software
requirements.

Known Issues in this Release

The following issue is open in this release of the Storage Center Charting Viewer.
CQ00347380 ‐ IO Latency charts label latency in milliseconds (ms) but the data is displayed
in microseconds (μs). This causes the IO Latency charts to show high latency.

Charting Viewer Installation

The Storage Center Charting Viewer is available for download as a zip file from the Dell
Compellent support portal. The zip file contains the setup file that is used to install the
Storage Center Charting Viewer.

Note: This document describes the stand‐alone version of the Storage Center
Charting Viewer.

Downloading the Charting Viewer

Download the Charting Viewer to the computer from which you want to view Storage
Center charts.
1 Go to the Dell Compellent support portal:
support.dell.com/compellent
2 Click one of the links at the bottom of the portal page to log in to your Dell Compellent
Customer account or Dell Compellent Partner Support account.
3 Click the Knowledge Center link. The Compellent Knowledge Center website
appears.

4 Click the Software link in the left‐hand navigation pane. A list of software available for
download is displayed.
5 Click the Download Now link for the Storage Center Charting Viewer. A zip file is
downloaded that contains the software setup file.

Installing the Charting Viewer

Install the Charting Viewer on the computer from which you want to view Storage Center
charts.
1 Extract the setup file from the downloaded zip file.
2 Double‐click the setup file. The installation wizard starts.

3 Click Next. The License Agreement page appears.

4 Click Yes to accept the License Agreement. The installation wizard installs the Charting
Viewer.
5 When the installation is complete, click Finish to exit the wizard.

Charting Viewer Operation

Use the Storage Center Charting Viewer to connect to a Storage Center and perform
monitoring of volume, server, disk, and controller IO usage.

Starting the Charting Viewer

Start the Charting Viewer and log in using a Storage Center username and password.
1 From the Windows Start menu, select All Programs→ Dell Compellent→ Charting
Viewer→ Charting Viewer. The Storage Center Charting Viewer Login dialog box
appears.

2 Enter the management IP address or host name of the Storage Center to which you want
to connect in the Host Name field.
3 Enter the username of a Storage Center user in the User Name field.
4 Enter the password of a Storage Center user in the Password field.
5 Click Login. The Charting Viewer displays IO usage statistics for the connected Storage
Center.

Controlling the Charting Viewer

The check boxes and buttons on the Charting Viewer toolbar control the information that
is displayed.

Data Gathering and Navigation Controls

Use the following toolbar buttons to control data gathering and navigation:

Field/Option Description
Click to display the previous chart from the history of displayed charts.

Click to display the next chart from the history of displayed charts.

Use the Show Last drop‐down menu to select the time period of the data to
display.

Click to start gathering data from the connected Storage Center.

Click to stop gathering data from the connected Storage Center.

Click to display a dialog box and select the objects for which to gather and
display data. See Setting Charting Viewer Properties on page 5.

Click to retrieve updated data from the connected Storage Center.

Click to display a drop‐down menu of options by which to filter information

displayed on the tabs.

Charting Viewer Report Controls

Use the following options to control how Charting Viewer reports are displayed:

Field/Option Description
Single Tab Select the Single Tab check box to display all line graphs on a single tab.
Clear this check box to display line graphs on separate tabs.

Auto‐Scale The IO, KB, and Lat check boxes are selected by default. These settings
auto‐scale the IO usage, KB usage, and Latency data in the charts. To disable
auto‐scaling and specify a scale to use:
• Clear the IO check box and specify the scale to use in the IO field.
• Clear the KB check box and specify the scale to use in the KB field.
• Clear the Lat check box and specify the scale to use in the Lat field.

Layout Select the chart layout:

• When a Storage Center is selected from the navigation pane, the FE&BE
Same check box is displayed.

Select the FE&BE Same check box to display the Front End (FE) and Back
End (BE) usage statistics on one chart. Clear the FE&BE Same check box
to display usage statistics on two charts.
• When a storage object, such as a server or a controller, is selected from the
navigation pane, the IO&KB Same check box is displayed.

Select the IO&KB Same check box to display IO and KB usage statistics
on one chart. Clear the IO&KB Same check box to display usage statistics
on two charts.

Display Select the IO usage statistics to display in the chart.

Setting Charting Viewer Properties

Select the IO usage data to gather and display in the Charting Viewer.
1 Click Properties on the Charting Viewer main page. The Charting Settings dialog box
appears.

2 Select the check boxes of the objects for which you want to gather and display
information:
 Volume IO Usage: Retrieves and displays IO usage statistics for all volumes, volume
folders, and individual volumes.
 Server IO Usage: Retrieves and displays IO usage statistics for all servers, server
folders, and individual servers.
 Disk IO Usage: Retrieves and displays IO usage statistics for all disks, disk folders,
and individual disks.
 Controller/Controller Ports IO Usage: Retrieves and displays IO usage statistics for
all controllers, individual controllers, and individual ports on a controller.
3 Click OK. Changes to the settings are saved and the dialog box closes.

Viewing Charts
The Charting Viewer provides charts for the following types of Storage Center objects:
 Storage Center
 Volumes
 Servers
 Remote Storage Centers
 Disks
 Controllers/Ports

View a Storage Center Chart

The Storage Center chart displays IO performance statistics for the Storage Center.
1 In the Charting Viewer navigation pane, select Storage Center.
2 Click one of the following tabs or select the Single Tab check box to display all tab
information on one pane:
 KB/Sec: Displays the FE (Front End) and BE (Back End) IO usage statistics for the
Storage Center in KB/Sec.
 IO/Sec: Displays the FE (Front End) and BE (Back End) IO usage statistics for the
Storage Center in IO/Sec.
 IO Pending: Displays IO pending statistics for the Storage Center.

View a Volume Chart

The Volume chart displays IO performance statistics for volumes on the Storage Center.
1 In the Charting Viewer navigation pane, select Volumes, a volume folder, or an
individual volume.
2 Click one of the following tabs or select the Single Tab check box to display all tab
information on one pane:
 IO Stats: Displays IO usage statistics for the selected volume object in KB/Sec and
IO/Sec.
 IO Latency: Displays read, write, and transfer IO latency statistics for the selected
volume or volume folder object in milliseconds.
 IO Pending: Displays IO pending statistics for the selected volume or volume folder
object.

View a Server Chart

The Server chart displays IO performance statistics for servers on the Storage Center.
1 In the Charting Viewer navigation pane, select Servers, a server folder, or an
individual server.
2 Click one of the following tabs or select the Single Tab check box to display all tab
information on one pane:
 IO Stats: Displays IO usage statistics for the selected server object in KB/Sec and IO/
Sec.
 IO Latency: Displays read, write, and transfer IO latency statistics for the selected
server, server folder, or server HBA object in milliseconds.

View a Remote Storage Center Chart

The Remove Storage Center chart displays IO performance statistics for remote Storage
Center controllers.
1 In the Charting Viewer navigation pane, select Remote Storage Centers, a remote
Storage Center folder, or remote Storage Center controller.
2 Click one of the following tabs or select the Single Tab check box to display all tab
information on one pane:
 IO Stats: Displays IO usage statistics for the selected remote Storage Center object
in KB/Sec and IO/Sec.
 IO Latency: Displays read, write, and transfer IO latency statistics for the selected
remote Storage Center or remote Storage Center HBA object in milliseconds.

View a Disk Chart

The Disk chart displays IO performance statistics for disks on the Storage Center.
1 In the Charting Viewer navigation pane, select Disks, a disk folder, or an individual
disk.
2 Click one of the following tabs or select the Single Tab check box to display all tab
information on one pane:
 IO Stats: Displays IO usage statistics for the selected disk object in KB/Sec and IO/
Sec.
 IO Latency: Displays read/write IO latency statistics for the selected disk object in
milliseconds.
 IO/Sec Enclosure Charts: Displays IO usage statistics for the enclosure(s) of the
selected disk type in IO/Sec.
 KB/Sec Enclosure Charts: Displays IO usage statistics for the enclosure(s) of the
selected disk type in KB/Sec.
 Latency Enclosure Charts: Displays IO latency statistics for the enclosure(s) of the
selected disk type in milliseconds.

View a Controller/Controller Ports Chart

The Controllers/Controller Ports chart displays IO performance statistics for controllers
and controller ports on the Storage Center.
1 In the Charting Viewer navigation pane, select Controllers, an individual controller, a
controller port, or an individual port.
2 Click one of the following tabs or select the Single Tab check box to display all tab
information on one pane:
 IO Stats: Displays IO usage statistics for the selected controller object in KB/Sec and
IO/Sec.
 IO Latency: Displays read/write IO latency statistics for the selected controller object
in milliseconds.
 CPU/Memory: Displays the percentage of CPU and memory used for the selected
controller.

Performing Actions on Storage Center Charts

Perform the following tasks to zoom in and out of charts and save or print charts.

Zoom into an Area of the Chart

Use the zoom feature to display an area of a chart in more detail.
1 Use the mouse to select an area of the chart in which to zoom.
a Click and hold the right or left mouse button on the chart.
b Drag the mouse to the right to select an area of the chart.
2 Release the mouse button to zoom in on the selected area of the chart.

Return to the Normal Zoom Level of the Chart

Zoom out to display the chart with a normal zoom level.
1 Click and hold the right or left mouse button on the chart.
2 Drag the mouse to the left to return to the normal zoom level of the chart.

Save a Chart as a PNG Image

Use the Save As option in the right‐click menu to export a chart as a PNG image.
1 Right‐click on the chart to save, and select Save as. The Save dialog box appears.
2 Select the directory to which to save the chart image.
3 Enter a name for the image file in the File name field.
4 Click Save.

Copy a Chart
Use the Copy option in the right‐click menu to copy a chart.
1 Right‐click on the chart to copy, and select Copy.
2 Start a program in which to paste the chart, such as Microsoft Paint.
3 Press Ctrl+v to paste the chart into the program started in the previous step.

Print a Chart
Use the Print option in the right‐click menu to print a chart.
1 Right‐click on the chart to print, and select Print. The Page Setup dialog box appears.

2 Select Page Setup options from the list of available options for your printer
configuration.
3 Click OK. The Print dialog box appears.
4 Select the printer to which to print the chart.
5 Click OK. The chart is printed to the selected printer.
