Lab Assignment 1

Modeling and Simulation

of Electric Circuits
PART 1 : Simulation of RLC Circuits

Task 1.1 Analysis of series RLC circuits (20 Marks)

For the circuit shown in Figure 1.1, all initial conditions are zero.

Figure 1.1
a) Derive the state equations in the following form:
ẋ = Ax + Bu
{ (1.1)
y = Cx + Du
Use the state variables 𝑥1 = 𝑖𝐿 = 𝑖 and 𝑥2 = 𝑣𝑐 = 𝑣𝑜𝑢𝑡
b) Derive the transfer function
𝑁(𝑠)
𝐺(𝑠) = (1.2)
𝐷(𝑠)
c) Check your answers with MATLAB commands ss2tf() and tf2ss(0.
d) Use the Simulink models of Figure 1.2 to obtain the step response of the two
representations (state-space and transfer function) and plot the results. The
initial conditions are zero.

Task 1.2 Analysis of parallel RLC circuits (20 Marks)

In the circuit shown in Figure 1.3, all initial conditions are zero.
Figure 1.3

a) Derive the state equations with x1 = iL, x2 = vC1 and x3 = vC2 = y. Assume all initial
conditions are zero.
b) Create the Simulink model of Figure 1.4 and plot the response of the circuit with
VP = 1 V.

PART 2 : Transient Analysis of Second and High Order Electric Circuits

Task 2.1 Analysis of second order electric circuits (30 Marks)

For the circuit shown in Figure 2.1 has the following parameters:
E = 10 V, R1 =10 Ω, R2 =15 Ω, R3 = 5 Ω; R4 = 60 Ω, L =1 mH, C =10 μF

Figure 2.1

a) The switch SW is closed at t = 0, apply Kirchhoff’s laws (KCL and KVL) and
derive the differential equations of the circuit.
b) Determine manually the equation of the current i3 and plot the waveform.
c) Build the Simulink model of the circuit using the differential equations found in
a). Plot the waveform of the current i3 and compare the results with b).
d) Plot on the same graph the waveforms of the currents i1, i2, i3 and the voltage
across the inductor.

Task 2.2 Analysis of high order electric circuits (30 Marks)

Consider the Simulink diagram of a passive high order circuit shown in Figure 2.2. The
circuit has the following parameter values: : E = 60 V, R1 =15 Ω, R2 = 20 Ω, R3 = 20 Ω,
R4 = 20 Ω, R5 =10 Ω, R6 = 25 Ω, L1 = 0.002 H, L2 = 0.005 H, L3 = 0.004 H, C1 =100 μF,
C2 = 250 μF.

Figure 2.2
a) Create the circuit of Figure 2.2 in Simulink and display the current waveforms
from the scopes.
b) Derive all the circuit equations that have been used to build the Simulink model
of Figure 2.2.
c) Sketch a labelled diagram of the circuit studied showing the currents, voltage
and all the components of the circuit..
