DECRYPTION ASSINGMENT INSTRUCTIONS/TIPS

● Some of the Aristocrat ciphers uses random alphabet.

● In the random alphabet there is no clue given.

● Identify the frequency of the alphabets and complete the frequency table.

● You need to look at the letter frequency and need to figure it out which letter should be
replaced by which letter.
● Check the title for thoughts of words that might appear in the plaintext. If a tip appears,
look for its proper spot in the cipher.
● Look for common short words (in, it, is, of, no, on, and the). ‘The” often starts of a
sentence.
● Look for common words like THE, YOU, I, A, etc. Look for pattern words like PEOPLE,
THAT, SAYS, ELSE, etc.
● Look for apostrophe use, as in I'M, I'D, IT'S, CAN'T, WON'T, SHOULDN'T, or *BILL’S,
WORLD’S, etc.
● One letter word most always are “a” or “I.”’. (Rare exceptions are “O,” “X” marks the
spot.)
● Letter frequency counts may lead us to the most often used letter “e”.

● An asterisk (*) precedes a capitalized word.

● Pattern words are those words having repeat letters.

● We think of the common pattern word “that” in terms of 1-2-3-1, meaning the first and
last letter of the word are the same.
