Paddington Bear
Paddington Bear 2, a live action animation film released in 2017, brought the character of Paddington
renewed international popularity. Paddington, however, is not as young as you would imagine. In fact, he was
first brought to life by the British writer Michael Bond in 1956, who noticed a lonely teddy bear sitting on a
shelf in a London store on Christmas Eve. He then wrote a story based on this sad-looking little bear. A Bear
Called Paddington was published in 1958 and following its great success Bond went on to write twenty other
books featuring Paddington as the friendly bear from Peru, dressed in a duffle coat, carrying around an old
suitcase and always wanting more marmalade. In the first story, Paddington is found at Paddington station in
London by the Brown family, with a note stuck to his coat that reads “Please look after this bear. Thank you.”
He is thus given the name Paddington Brown. We only find out later that his real Peruvian name is Pastuso.

Bond initially wanted to have Paddington come from Africa, but his editor explained that there are no bears
in Africa, so Bond opted for Peru as the birthplace of Paddington, since it is there that the spectacled bear lives.
Polite, kindhearted and cutely clumsy, Paddington is also known for the deep serious look he gives people
he finds annoying or unfair.
Two decades after being written into existence, Paddington became a toy, reaching iconic status in British
culture. So much so that the first item to travel through the Channel Tunnel between the United Kingdom and
