How to decrease the risk of a
iatrogenic infection when treating
dental patients?

– Efficient collection of anamnestic data

– Effective infection controll
– Well organised work-flows
– Application of modern technologies
The patient

• When treating a dental patient the very first step

is the efficient collection of anamnestic data and
than an extraoral and intraoral examination. The
aim is not only to find patients of different risk
goups and to access and prevent the possible
complications of dental treatments, but also to
find unrevealed diseases, conditions.
• The patient might not know about his/her
infectious disease and therefore all the patients
should be treated as a potential source of
infection.
Patients with infectious diseases
(hepatitis, AIDS, tuberculosis, etc.)

• Students are not allowed to treate these

patients
Hygienic zones

The dental operatory has to be divided three

hygienic risk zones:
– treatment zone and the zone of handling the
dirty instruments
– treatment surrounding zone;
– the rest of the operatory
Brief summary of infection
control in dentistry:

 How to wash hands before and after the wearing

gloves
 Usage of personal barriers (gloves, facial mask,
protective eye ware or facial shield, lab coat)
 How to handle sharp instruments
 Handling, desinfecting multy-use instruments
 Coughing etiquette, breathing higiene (sneezing etc.)
 Handling hazardous waste
 Aseptic treating techniques when needed
