b) Write a short note on particle size distribution. Give its significance. (6)
12 a) Explain the important characteristics of solids and their behaviour under (8)
different conditions.
b) Analyse the influence of screen size on the efficiency and capacity of an (6)
industrial screen.
Module -2
13 a) Develop a detailed process for the beneficiation of metal in iron plant. (8)
b) Explain the parameters used in the design of continuous thickeners. (6)
14 a) Spherical particles of density 2500 kg/m3 and in the size range 20 – 100 mm are (8)
fed continuously into a stream of water (density = 1000 kg/m3 and viscosity =
0.001 Pa.s) flowing upwards in a vertical, large diameter pipe. Determine the
maximum water velocity required to ensure that no particles of diameter greater
than 60 mm are carried upwards with water.
b) Describe the working of mechanical and non-mechanical classifiers. (6)
Module -3
15 a) Illustrate the working of Blake jaw crusher using a neat diagram. List its (8)

b) Determine the power required to crush 100 tons/hr of coarse solid feed if 80% of (6)
the feed passes through a 2-inch screen and 80% of product passes through a
1/8-inch screen.
16 a) List the advantages of Bond’s law over Rittinger’s law. A mill crushes 50 tons (8)

Concentration of solid in feed = 60 g/L

Porosity of cake = 0.835
Density of dry solid in cake = 2000 kg/m3
Final thickness of cake = 150 mm
Speed of centrifuge = 2000 rpm
Specific cake resistance = 9.5×1010 ft/lb
Filter medium resistance = 2.6×1010 ft-1
The final cake is washed with water under such conditions that the radius of the
inner surface of the liquid is 200 mm. Assuming that the rate of flow of wash
water equals the final rate of flow, estimate the rate of washing.
