BOMBING EXPLOSION INSIDE DIMAPORO GYMNASIUM

On December 3, 2023, a bomb exploded inside the Dimaporo Gymnasium at Mindanao State
University-Main Campus during a Sunday mass, resulting in four fatalities and numerous injuries.

According to CCTV footage obtained by the Armed Forces of the Philippines, two individuals
raised suspicion. At 6:09am, a man wearing a black hoodie and red cap with white front panel
approached the Dimaporo Gymnasium entrance, later retracing his steps towards the side of the gym at
6:13 am. Subsequently, at 7:03 am, another man, dressed in white polo and khaki cap, carrying a black
bag, appeared on the footage walking towards the gym. The man in black followed him, though they
took different pathways. At 7:11 am, the man in white, now without the black, was seen holding a
suspicious item resembling a detonator in his hand as he walked back to the side of the gym, followed
by the man in black. They disappeared from the CCTV’s view, and a minute later, at 7:12 am, the bomb
exploded.

In response to the explosion, nearby individuals rushed to aid those affected, providing free
rides to the hospital downtown. Law enforcement officers entered the crime scene to assist and conduct
investigations, while unauthorized individuals were kept away to ensure the inspection proceeded
smoothly. Additional law enforcement units were alerted and mobilized to provide support.

Following the incident, the Mindanao State University, through the office of the MSU-System
President, released an official statement suspending classes until further notice. Additional security
personnel were deployed to safeguard the campus, and collaboration with local government units and
law enforcement authorities was emphasized to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to
justice.

Furthermore, authorities from different municipalities provided free transportation for MSU
constituents wishing to return to their respective hometowns. Several organizations and the university
colleges initiated assistance programs for those affected by the incident.

Nevertheless, despite the swift and coordinated response, the impact of the explosion
continued to resonate within the campus and across social media platforms. Many students residing in
university dormitories opted to return to their hometowns, while families, friends, and sympathizers of
the victims, particularly those who lost their lives, conveyed their profound grief and heartfelt
condolences online. Calls for justice echoed among the affected community members, directed towards
the university authorities. Additionally, numerous official statements condemning this act of terrorism
were issued, underscoring the collective outrage and demand for accountability.

Building upon these events, recent reports have confirmed that the alleged mastermind behind
the deadly bombing at Mindanao State University (MSU) in Marawi City last December has been
apprehended. Khadafi Mimbesa, also known as “Engineer,” served as the amir or leader of Dawlah
Islamiyah – Maute Group. The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) disclosed in a statement that
Mimbesa’s demise was further validated by testimonies from a surrendered terrorist known as KHATAB,
a significant figure within the DI-Maute Group, who surrendered to the 2 nd Mechanized Brigade on
February 11. This significant development underscores the ongoing efforts to dismantle terrorist
networks and bring justice to the victims of the MSU bombing.
