MAGNETISM

Magnetism is caused by the interaction of moving electric charges. The first magnetic phenomena was observed in fragments of magnetized iron ore found in ancient Magnesia. An iron rod brought near a natural magnet becomes magnetized. Objects containing iron are attracted to magnets. The Earth itself acts as a magnet with an invisible north and south pole. Magnets always have both a north and south pole, and like poles repel while opposite poles attract. There is no evidence that single magnetic poles exist on their own. A compass needle points north because the Earth's north geographic pole is near its south magnetic pole.

MAGNETISM

the interaction of moving electric

charges
the 1st magnetic phenomena was first
observed in fragments of magnetized
iron ore found near the ancient city of
Magnesia (Manisa, Turkey)
when an iron rod is brought in contact
with a natural magnet, the rod
becomes magnetized
an object that contains iron but is not
magnetized is attracted to either pole
of a permanent magnet
THE MAGNETIC POLES
N S
THE EARTH IS A MAGNET
opposite poles attract each
other, meanwhile similar
poles repel
e.g: the north magnetic pole
S of a magnet repels the north
magnetic pole of a different
magnet
when broken into two, both
will have north and south
N
magnetic poles
there are no evidence of an
existence of a magnetic
monopole; that is neither
the north geographic pole is close to a north or south poles exist
magnetic south pole, that is why the individually
north magnetic pole of a compass
needle points to the earth's
geographic north
MAGNETIC FIELD, B

A moving charge or a current creates a magnetic field in the surrounding

space
The magnetic field exerts a force F on any other moving charge or current
that is present in the field.

MAGNETIC FORCES ON
MOVING CHARGES
4 KEY CHARACTERISTICS: F = |q| v β sin Θ
1. The magnitude of the magnetic forces is
proportional to the magnitude of the where:
charge. F - magnitude of the magnetic
2. The magnitude of the forces is also force felt by a charged object
proportional to the magnitude of the exposed to a magnetic field β
field. q - charge of the object exposed
3. The magnetic force depends on the to the magnetic field
particle's velocity. V - velocity of the charged object
4. The direction of the magnetic force is moving in the magnetic field
always perpendicular to both magnetic β - strength of the magnetic field
field and velocity. at the point where the charged
object is
Θ - angle measured form the
direction of V to the direction of
β

CHECKPOINT
Eleckid is a young hero that can store charges in his body and release it unto the
environment. He defeated a supervillain that feeds on magnetic forces by staying
very still. How?
The charges in his body are stationary hence not producing a magnetic field that the
villain can feed on.
