Addition and Subtraction of Fractions

1. The document outlines a lesson plan for a 7th grade math class on adding and subtracting fractions. It includes learning objectives, content, learning resources, procedures, examples, and an evaluation. 2. Key parts of the procedures include reviewing concepts through group activities with slates, watching an instructional video, and practicing sample problems. Examples are provided to demonstrate adding and subtracting similar, dissimilar, and mixed fractions. 3. Students are asked to apply the concepts by solving word problems involving fractions of distances traveled and amounts of food. The lesson aims to build students' skills in performing fraction operations and applying them to real-world scenarios.

1. What is a fraction?
- (from Latin: fractus, "broken") represents a part of a whole or, more
generally, any number of equal parts. When spoken in everyday English, a
fraction describes how many parts of a certain size there are, for example,
one-half, eight-fifths, three-quarters. A fraction consists of an
integer numerator, displayed above a line (or before a slash like ⁄2), and
1

a non-zero integer denominator, displayed below (or after) that line.

In adding and subtracting fractions, we have to consider if they are similar

fractions, dissimilar fractions or mixed fractions.
