MAINTENANCE
Process of preserving condition of a solar
system.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
Process of tracing and correcting a fault in
solar installation system.
OBJECTIVES OF MAINTENANCE
To know types of fault in a pv system.
To diagnos and rectify these faults where
necessary.
To know common solar pv installation
mistakes and how to rectify them.
ACTIVITIES IN MAINTENANCE
1. ASK the owner if there are any
problems in the system and note
anything it is not working
2. Verify if the information given by theuser is correct by going through the
installation
. Disconnect the module/array and
measure short circuit current and open
circuit voltage
. Disconnect the battery leads remove
any corrosion and clean the battery
surface
. Measure the soc of the battery
. If equalisation charge is required take
the battery to the Ac charging station
Charger controller requires no
maintenance apart from regular checks of
connections to ensure that they are tight
and corrosion free.
e Verify that there is power going to the
loads
e Switch off the main load and proceed
to perform maintenance of various
appliances.e Verify that everything is working after
switching ON the main switch through
a final visual inspection.
e Make a detailed list of spares and
spare parts required.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
e Involves checking all system
parameters to find where the problems
lies.
e Users may report a problem that is
normal and also can report a normal
that is a trouble.
In trouble shooting there are many ways to
solve a problem;choose a better solution
COMMON TROUBLES IN PV SYSTEM
1. PV MODULE
e Low or no output
Cause
e Accumulation of dust on the surfacee Poor weather (cloudy)
e Shading
e Wrong tilt angle
e Loose connection
e Breakage on surface of the module
e Short circuiting the module
e Theft
CHARGER CONTROLLER
TROUBLE
¢ Nocurrent is flowing in the battery
e Signals a fully charged battery that is
just being charged
e Keeps on charging even when the
battery is fully charged.
CAUSE
e Blown up fuse
e Set point voltages not within the set
standards
e Malfunction of the internal circuit
BATTERY
TROUBLEe Cannot be charged
e Easily discharged
e Unequally cell voltages
CAUSE
e sulfation
e Stratification
e Dried up/low electrolyte
e Loose connection at the terminals
e High temperatures
e Leakage of electricity
e End of battery life (cycle life)
BALANCE OF SYSTEM
(switches,cables,lights,sockets etc)
TROUBLE
¢ No light even when a battery is full
e Under voltage at the load end
e¢ No power at the load end
CAUSE
e Open short circuiting or grounding
e Inappropriate cable size(large voltagedrop)
e Burnt out light fittings
e Loose connection at the terminals
e High resistance at the switch contacts
