Lesson Plan On Measures of Position

This lesson plan teaches students about measures of position, specifically quartiles, using ungrouped data sets. It defines key terms like measure, position, and quartile. It provides a formula and example to find the first (Q1), second (Q2), and third (Q3) quartiles of an ungrouped data set by determining the positions that divide it into four equal parts. Students will practice finding quartiles, median, and interquartile range. For homework, they will research deciles as another measure of position.

A SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS

MEASURES OF POSITION (QUARTILE)

I. OBJECTIVES
at the end of the discussion, students should be able to:

A. Determine the quartiles of an ungrouped data;

B. Solve quartile value of an ungrouped data;
C. Appreciate the concept of measures of position in real life situation.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Topic: Measures of Position (Quartile)

C. Materials: powerpoint, chalk, cartolina

III. PROCEDURE

A. Prayer
B. Greetings
C. Checking of Attendance
D. Classroom Management
E. Review
F. Motivation
Let the students guess the 4 pics 1 word guessing game.
G. Presentation of the lesson
The teacher will use the guessing game to define the lesson for today. The lesson
today is Measures of Position.

H. Discussion

Measure - measure is a standard unit used to express the size, amount, or degree of
something.

Position - is arranging a particular position that he/she belong.

Quartile - the score points which divide a distribution in four equal parts.

To determine the measurement of position, the data must sorted from the lowest to
highest.
25% 50% 75% 100%
Q1 Q2 Q3

There are 3 quartiles, the lower quartile Q1, middle quartile or median Q2, and the
upper quartile Q3.
The difference between Q3 and Q1, the interquartile range.

25% of the data has value ≤ Q1.

50% of the data has value ≤ Q2.
75% of the data has value ≤ Q3.

Formula on getting quartiles of ungrouped data:

1
First Quartile Q 1= (n+1)
4

1
Second Quartile Q 2= (n+1)
2

3
Third Quartile Q 3= (n+1)
4

Where n is the total number of items in the distribution.

Example:

The scores of 7 students in a Mathematics seatwork are : 8, 9, 7, 5, 6, 7, 4. Find Q1,

Q2, Q3.

1st step: arrange the data into ascending order: 4, 5, 6, 7, 7, 8, 9

2nd step is to find the Q1. Use Formula
1
Q 1= (n+1)
4

1
Q 1= (7+1)
4

1
Q 1= (8)
4

Q1=2

The 2nd position as the lower quartile. Q1 is 5.

Remember! The formula doesn’t give you the value for the upper quartile, it gives
you the place.

3rd step is to find Q2. Use Formula

1
Q 2= (n+1)
2

1
Q 2= (7+1)
2

1
Q 2= (8)
2

Q 2=¿ 4
th
The 4 position is the middle quartile. Q2 is 7.

4rd step is to find Q3. Use Formula

3
Q 3= (n+1)
4

3
Q 3= (7+1)
4

3
Q 3= (8)
4

Q 3=¿ 6

The 6th position is the middle quartile. Q3 is 8.

4 5 6 7 7 8 9

Q1 Q2 Q3

Application:

The students is divided into groups

The following are the age of applicants of Teacher 1.

19 21 23 20 23 27 25
24 31 28 27 33 21 24

Given the table above, find the median, lower quartile, upper quartile and interquartile
range of the following data set of values
IV. Evaluation:

Answer the following.

1. It also known as the lower quartile basically separates the lowest 25% of data from
the highest 75%. ______________________

2. It is the middle quartile also the same as the median it divides numbers into 2
equal parts.______________________

3. It is the upper quartile separates the highest 25% of data from the lowest
75%.______________________

4. Find the lower and upper quartile of the data. The number of days taken by each of
11 employees to finish the job were
32 39 27

23 42 35

42 29 46

37 42

5. Find the quartile of the problem. A group of students of TNHS obtained the
following scores in their Statistics quiz:

11, 15, 17, 14, 13, 18, 15, 18, 12, 19

V. Assignnment

Research and study in advance about Measures of Position on Deciles.
