Assignment #1
1. In a survey, 2000 internet users chose to respond to this question posted on a newspaper's electronic
Edition. “Is news online as satisfying as print and TV news?” 52% of the respondents said yes.
Tasks:
(a) determine whether the study is descriptive or Inferential
(b) identify the sample and the population.
(c) is the value of 52% as statistic or a parameter?
(D) What is the sampling procedure?
(E) identify a major problem with the study.
Answer:
(A) The study is *inferential* because it aims to make a conclusion about the population based on the sample
data.
(B) The *sample* is the 2000 internet users who responded to the question, while the *population* is the entire
group of internet users who could have responded to the question¹.
(C) The value of 52% is a *statistic* because it is a numerical summary of the sample data.
(D) The *sampling procedure* is not explicitly mentioned in the exercise. However, we can assume that the
sample was selected using a *random sampling* method, which is a common technique used to obtain a
representative sample from a population.
(E) *A major problem* with the study is that it only considers the opinions of internet users who chose to
respond to the question. This means that the sample may not be representative of the entire population of
internet users, and the results may not be generalizable to the population as a whole.
2. Given the data set: 7, 11, 14, 5, 8, 27, 16, 10, 13, 17, 16, find the following:
A. Mean, Median, Mode, And Range.
B. Q1, Q2, Q3, and the IQR.
Answer:
A. Mean
7 + 11 + 14 + 5 + 8 + 27 + 16 + 10 + 13 + 17 + 16 = 144
144 / 12 = 144
B. Median
5, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 16, 16, 17, 27
(11+13) /s = 24/2
0=12
C. Mode
No Mode
D. Range
27 – 5 = 22

3. o find the *second quartile (Q2)*, we need to find the median of the entire data set. We already found
that the median is 12.
4.
5. To find the *third quartile (Q3)*, we need to find the median of the upper half of the data set. The upper
half of the data set is 13, 14, 16, 16, 17, and 27. Since there are an even number of values in the upper
half of the data set, the median is the average of the two middle values, which are 16 and 17. So Q3 is
(16 + 17) / 2 = *16.5*.
6.
7. To find the *interquartile range (IQR)*, subtract Q1 from Q3. So IQR is 16.5 - 9 = *7.5*.
