Statll Assignment

1. The document describes several statistical hypothesis tests and analyses: - A test comparing the mean political ideology between vegetarian and non-vegetarian students. - Construction of a 99% confidence interval for the mean amount dispensed by a packing machine. - Construction of a 90% confidence interval for the average number of days absent from school. - Writing the null and alternative hypotheses for several hypothesis tests. 2. A test of whether the mean length of nails produced by a machine is greater than 2.5 cm, based on a sample of 16 nails where 13 were longer than 2.5 cm. 3. A test of whether the drop-out rate for science students is greater than the

For a random sample of Harvard University psychology majors, the responses on

political ideology had a mean of 3.18 and standard deviation of 1.72 for 51 non-
vegetarian students and a mean of 2.22 and standard deviation of .67 for the 20
vegetarian students. Defining appropriate notation, state the null and alternative
hypotheses for testing whether there is a difference between population mean ideology
for vegetarian and non-vegetarian students
2. For all settings a packing machine delivers a precise amount of liquid; the amount
dispensed always has standard deviation 0.07 ounce. To calibrate the machine its
setting is fixed and it is operated 50 times. The mean amount delivered is 6.02 ounces
with sample standard deviation 0.04 ounce. Construct a 99% confidence interval for the
mean amount delivered at this setting. (the z-value of 99% is 2.58 )
3. For each of 40 high school students in one county the number of days absent from
school in the previous year were counted, with the results shown in the frequency table.

x 0 1 2 3 4 5
f 24 7 5 2 1 1

Construct a 90% confidence interval for the average number of days absent from school
of all students in the county. (the z-value of 90% is 1.65)
4. Write down the null and alternative hypotheses for the following tests, defining the
meaning
of any parameters.
A. Daniel wants to test whether the proportion of children in his school who like
football is higher than 60%.
B. Elsa wants to find out whether the proportion of households with a pet is higher
than 1 in 3.
C. The proportion of faulty components produced by a machine was 6% and the
manager wants to check whether this has decreased following a routine
maintenance check.
D. Joseph thinks that fewer than half of all children eat 5 or more pieces of fruit a day
and wants to confirm this by using a hypothesis test.
5. The lengths of nails produced by a machine have a normal distribution with mean 2.5
cm.
A random sample of 16 nails is selected from a drum containing a large number of these
nails. The nails are measured and 13 are found to have length greater than 2.5 cm. Test,
at the 2.5 % significance level, whether the mean length of the nails in the drum is
greater than 2.5 cm
6. The drop-out rate of students enrolled at a certain university is reported to be 13.2%.
The Dean of Students suspects that the drop-out rate for science students is greater than
13.2%, and he examines the records of a random sample of 95 of these students. The
number of drop-outs was found to be 20. Test the Dean’s suspicion at the 2%
significance level.
7. A sociologist believes that more boys than girls are born during war time. In a sample of
200 babies born in countries at war, 116 were boys. Do these data support the
sociologist’s theory at the 5% significance level?
