Solved Problems Shear Stress

This document contains 9 solved problems related to shearing stress. The problems calculate things like the force required to punch a hole in a plate, the diameter of bolts or pins that can be used given the shear strength of the material and applied forces, and the maximum safe loads that can be applied before exceeding the allowable shear stress. The document provides the questions, diagrams where relevant, and lists the key parameters like material properties and dimensions.

SOLVED PROBLEMS IN SHEARING STRESS

PROBLEM 1 PROBLEM 4
What force is required to punch a 20-mm-diameter hole in A 200-mm-diameter pulley is prevented from rotating
a plate that is 25 mm thick? The shear strength is 350 relative to 60-mm-diameter shaft by a 70-mm-long key, as
MN/m2. shown in figure. If a torque T = 2.2 kN·m is applied to the
shaft, determine the width b if the allowable shearing
stress in the key is 60 MPa.

PROBLEM 2
A hole is to be punched out of a plate having a shearing
strength of 40 ksi. The compressive stress in the punch is
limited to 50 ksi.
(a) Compute the maximum thickness of plate in which a
hole 2.5 inches in diameter can be punched.
(b) If the plate is 0.25-inch-thick, determine the diameter of
the smallest hole that can be punched

PROBLEM 5
The 7/8 in diameter pins at A and C that support the
structure are in single shear. Fine the largest force F that
can be applied to the structure if the working stress for
these pins is 5000 psi. Neglect the weights of the
members.

PROBLEM 3
Find the smallest diameter bolt that can be used in the
clevis shown in Fig. 1-11b if P =
400 kN. The shearing strength of the bolt is 300 MPa.

PROBLEM 6 PROBLEM 8
The bell crank, which is in equilibrium under the forces The right angle bar is supported by a pin at B and a roller
shown in the figure is supported by 20mm diameter pin at at C. What is the maximum safe value of the load P that
D that is in double shear. Determine can be applied if the shear stress in the pin is limited to
a. The required diameter of the connecting rod AB 200psi? The ¾ in diameter pin is in double shear.
given that its tensile working stress is 100MPa.
b. The shear stress in the pin

PROBLEM 9
The bar AB is supported by a frictionless inclined surface
at A and a 7/8 in diameter pin at B that is in double shear.
Determine the shear stress in the pin when the vertical
2000lb force is applied. Neglect the weight of the bar.

PROBLEM 7
Compute the maximum force P that can be applied to the
foot pedal. The 6-mm diameter pin at B is in single shear,
and its working shear stress is 28 MPa. The cable
attached at C has a diameter of 3mm and a working stress
of 140MPa.
