1
Far from home
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to get away from it all and go to work in one of the most remote
places on the planet? We spoke to climate scientist Dr. Ed Sacks, who is working at a research station in
Antarctica, about what it is like to live and work in one of the most isolated places on Earth. Read his interview
below.
Are all the people at the station scientists?

Not at all! Of course, there are a lot of scientists doing research. That is the reason the stations were built. But if
there were only scientists, life would be very difficult! We need to have a permanent doctor and also a chef,
electrician, plumber, and carpenter. So, many of us have different skills.

What do you do every day?

Most of the scientists work a normal eight-hour day, so that’s usually from 9 to 5 o’clock, five days a week. We
don’t have any cleaners here, so after work, we all help out with the everyday jobs such as doing the dishes and
cleaning. But we also have plenty of time to relax.

How do you relax?

Well, actually, that’s not very different from what I do at home. The research station has a gym, a climbing wall,
and sports facilities, so we can play badminton, for example. There’s also a library, so I read a lot. We watch
movies and use social media to keep in touch with our circle of friends at home. And there are plenty of people
here to talk to or play games with.

What is it like in the winter?

It’s a challenging time. Of course, it’s colder. But the biggest thing for us is the lack of light. By the middle of
winter – so from about May onwards – the sun doesn’t really rise at all. However, you do get fantastic sunsets.
The sky turns some amazing colors before it’s completely dark again. And one advantage of it being constantly
dark is that you can see the stars very clearly.

What is the hardest part of living there?

For me, the hardest part is when there are storms. You can’t even see out of the windows, never mind go outside.
That might be OK for an afternoon, but imagine what it’s like to be inside watching a fierce gale blowing for a
week! We’re always ready for a break by the end. Another real problem is that it is easy to be annoyed with the
people you are with. You spend all your time with new acquaintances rather than family. You really miss your
close friends and loved ones. I sometimes wish I had a shoulder to cry on. I spend a lot of time alone with my
thoughts.

2
Life on a research station
Antarctica is a remote continent at the far south of our planet. There are no towns or cities, but there are some
people living and working there as scientists. So, what is life like for the many scientists who spend their time in one
of the coldest places on Earth?

There are two research stations where some scientists work for most of the year, the Rothera Research Station and
the Halley VI Research Station. Some of Rothera was built in the 1970s and it has its own small airport runway. But
because the weather is often bad, planes might not arrive for months. For that reason, food supplies that arrive in
May have to last for six months. However, the research stations have their own chef and although all the food is
frozen, it is usually of very high quality.

In winter, temperatures there can drop to minus 30°C, although it can be even colder at Halley VI, occasionally below
minus 50°C. At these temperatures, it can be painful to breathe.

The scientists do many different jobs at these stations. Some of them keep a record of the temperature, clouds, and
frost. Others measure gases in the air. There are even scientists who dive under the sea ice to study sea animals and
plants.

Life is not easy for the scientists, and someone has to stay awake all night to check that everything is working. It can
be dangerous if the electricity stops working, for example. There is also a doctor as part of the team. If someone was
very sick, a plane might land to take the person to the hospital, but this would not be easy. It would depend on the
weather and would mean a very long flight to safety. For that reason, for much of the time, the scientists are very
much alone.

2 Read the texts again. Answer the questions.

1 Why do the scientists also have to clean and do the dishes?
___________________________________________________________________________________
2 Apart from the lack of light, what are the two hardest things for the scientist in the first text?
___________________________________________________________________________________

4 Why is most of the scientist’s food at the Rothera and Halley VI Reseach Stations frozen?
___________________________________________________________________________________
5 Why do you think it is dangerous if the electricity stops at the research station?
___________________________________________________________________________________
6 In what ways are the scientists “very much alone?”
___________________________________________________________________________________
7 Which text do you think is more effective at making you feel what life is like in Antarctica? Why?
