Travelling in a wheelchair

1
Travelling in a wheelchair is never easy and airlines and airports can sometimes be less willing than they should to
make changes to improve accessibility. Fred Gilmour is a well-known journalist, and his determination has
succeeded in making one airline change the way it accommodates wheelchair users.

When Fred was in his 20s, he was in an accident that meant he was unable to walk, so he now uses a wheelchair.
He often has to travel for work and travels by plane regularly. However, he found that on more than one occasion,
he was left on the plane after all the other passengers had gotten off. He then had to endure the wait for
someone to help him down using a special lift. He found that this person often came so late that the cleaners
were already on the plane, preparing it for the next flight. He was most annoyed to find that this usually
happened in his home country and he felt that something should be done about it.

Fred campaigned for the airline he used regularly to have a jetway : something that wheelchair users can use to
exit the plane much more easily – directly into the airport.

In the beginning, the airline complained that jetways were too expensive, but after Fred persisted in his campaign,
and used social media to his advantage, the airline finally agreed. Fred knows that he will still have to wait for
other passengers to get off the plane first for safety reasons, but hopes that from now on, he will quickly follow
them using his own wheelchair on a jetway. Let’s hope that delays for passengers with a disability will soon be a
thing of the past.

Some people with a disability often need a wheelchair to continue their journey when arriving at an airport after a
flight. But what happens if their wheelchair fails to arrive at the airport with them? This is exactly what happened
to James Links when he arrived at an airport in the USA.

James has used a wheelchair since he was sick as a child. He has a special wheelchair which helps stop him from
getting sores – painful parts of your body that you get from sitting in one position for a long time. So when he
was told that his wheelchair had not arrived on his flight, it was a big problem for him. The airport offered to
move him from the plane to the airport exit in a chair, but he knew this would not be comfortable and refused.
Instead, he used his arms to crawl through the airport to the exit. He then managed to use a luggage cart to get
to a taxi.

James says that all airports should have wheelchairs for people to use in situations like this, but few of them do.
He is campaigning for this situation to change.
Unit test

Amanda West uses a wheelchair and was traveling on a long-distance train in December. It turned out that the train
only had one restroom for disabled people, and the toilet in it was not working.

Luckily, Amanda did not need to use the restroom during the journey, but contacted the company about what
happened the next day. A charity representing disabled people heard about what had happened to her and acted
promptly to help her win money from the train company, which had broken the law by not having a working restroom
for passengers with a disability.

Amanda has given some of the money to the charity and is using the rest to campaign for change. She is now working
with train companies to improve conditions for passengers with disabilities. She hopes that her work will help improve
not only restrooms, but also information and staff training so that travel will become more accessible for everyone.
Maybe her difficult train journey last year has transformed adversity into opportunity, and everyone will soon be able
to travel in more comfort.
