The surprising truth about sharks

There is no disputing the fact that sharks have a bad reputation. Many people are very frightened of them,
thinking that there is a high chance of being killed or bitten by a shark and that they are a serious danger in our
oceans. However, as shark numbers have declined to a worrisome low in recent years, it has become clear that
sharks are not only not a danger, but are a vital part of our marine eco-system.

So, how reasonable is it to be afraid of sharks? Well, according to recent figures, only around 4-5 people are killed
by a shark each year. Even the state of Florida in the USA, where more people are bitten by sharks than anywhere
in the world, only reports about 20 shark bites a year. Think of how many people are swimming, diving, or doing
water sports around the world in a year, and these numbers become tiny in comparison. The bottom line is, you
are about 75 times more likely to be struck by lightning than to be killed by a shark. Shark attacks are rare, and if
swimmers take precautions, there is a very low chance of being harmed by one. In fact, sharks are in much more
danger because of us than we are because of them. Statistics have shown that around 100 million sharks are
killed by people every year.

But not only are sharks not a bad thing, scientists have highlighted that they are actually very good for our marine
eco-systems, and they are very concerned about the negative effects of the decline in shark populations. First,
without sharks, the population of some fish that sharks feed on would be a lot larger. If these fish then ate all the
smaller, plant-eating fish, marine plants would grow too large and start to damage the eco-system. Sharks also
eat fish that are sick. If they did not do this, disease would spread more quickly among fish. In other words, the
more sharks there are, the healthier fish populations remain.

Second, some sharks also travel. This helps take nutrients from one part of the ocean to another. For example,
the gray reef shark swims out to sea to feed at night, before returning close to the shore during the day. This
brings 95 kilos of nutrient-rich fertilizer to the shore every day which improves the environment and encourages
the growth of plants.

But sharks do not only help the environment: their bodies can help us, too! Scientists have started using chemicals
from inside sharks in medicine. This is because they know that sharks do not get sick very often, so they think
there is something inside them that keeps them healthy. Scientists are now experimenting with these chemicals to
see if they can help us find cures for some illnesses, including different viruses. They have also found that sharks’
skin contains something that stops bacteria from growing. Hospitals now use a cleaning liquid using material from
shark skin to keep surfaces free from bacteria.
Unit test

Finally, it seems that there are many people who want to see sharks, rather than run (or swim) away from them.
Shark tourism creates more than 10,000 jobs in around 30 different countries, mostly in boat rental businesses
and in diving companies. In the Philippines, some fishermen have changed jobs and become tour guides who take
people to see sharks. This career change has helped the fishermen earn more money. In addition, because fewer
fishermen now need to catch fish to earn a living, there are more fish in the sea.

To sum up, we should not be afraid of sharks because they do more for us than we think and are less dangerous
than most people assume. We should continue to study these strangely beautiful animals and remember how
important they are to our marine environments.
