III. TYPE OF COMMUNITY IMMERSION/PROJECT: NUMERACY AND LITERACY

TRAINING SERVICE

IV. PROJECT RATIONALE/ BACKGROUND:

This project proposal will be highly connected to community children with reading
difficulties. According to the three assessments cited by the World Bank poor learning
results were observed among students Grade 2-3 with more than 80 percent or that one
in every four students does not have the reading and mathematics skills.

Aside from various factors cause by poor learning it was made worse by
Covid19 Pandemic. Young children/students were isolated at home for almost two years
due to this crisis, within this long period of time, without any direct interaction with their
elementary teachers and classmates we can't really assure if they still learning though
they continue their studies but just in their respective homes by self-learning.

Through this project immersion of introducing to them the basic knowledge of the
alphabets, numbers, reading simple words and arithmetic and recognizing basic colors
and shapes will bring help to many young children/students to start developing and
improving their minds in mode of learning, finding and enhancing their respective
interest and skills. This project also includes molding of their social interaction by the
activities prepared to practice their communication skills and socialization, to encourage
them to be more active in participating in every activity not only in this project immersion
but especially to their homes and in their schooling.

V. OBJECTIVES:

• To decrease the numbers of non-readers and non-numerates pupils.

• To increase the reading level of non or slow readers pupils.
• To increase the numeracy level of non-numerates pupils.
• To lessen drop-out and encourage children to continue learning.

VI. PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Anchored to the objectives, this project highly focuses on promoting learning regarding
reading and comprehension to elementary student, especially those whom are on grade
4-5 level, by engaging them to reading enhancing activities and comprehension skills,
by giving them set of question at the end of each reading and discussion to test their
understanding.

Furthermore, this peer teaching activity will help boost their writing and reading
comprehension literacy skills so that they won’t struggle much when they reach higher
levels. Aside from that, students during this peer teaching session will be taught of
values and manners like how to pay respect to their peers and elderly, the power of
team work, and how to socially interact. This peer teaching will also include additional
and fun engaging activity such as energizer, and spelling bee with prize to motivate the
students.
Activities that won’t bore the students and help them engage more on the subjects
being taught.

This project will be accomplished with the help of the principal and teachers of
elementary students that will lend us access to our chosen school and of course
through the help and guidance of our LTS coordinator and trainers. Each shall do their
assigned task and duties to teach the respective area and respondents of this project.

The members of the group will be divided into 3 groups composed of five
trainees who will teach and guide the children and one facilitator, probably the leader
who will foresee and guide the actions of her members, a total of 16 peer facilitator.
Each group will take turn every week in their peer teaching and each group are required
to make their own set of activities that they will demonstrate or teach the children. It’s
important to note that those activities should be anchored to the objectives of this
project proposal.

VII. DURATION OF THE PROJECT:

This project is assumed to start on 3rd week of February 2023. It will take (4) hours
every week (Saturday) up until the 1st week of April 2023.
