CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

This chapter of the study shows the problem and its background. This

includes the background of the study, statement of the problem, significance of the

study, hypothesis, scopes and limitations, conceptual and theoretical framework and

the definition of terms.

1.1 Background Of The Study

The COVID-19 pandemic had drastically changed the worldwide educational

landscape, forcing organizations like schools to adapt remote or hybrid learning

strategies. Thus, students have to adapt to a new educational approach that is different

from the traditional classroom setting. In this context, the study aims to look into the

issue of procrastination amongst Senior High School students at WCC during the

pandemic.

Procrastinating is one of the most common act that is being talked by a lot of

people because ever since the pandemic started, many students tend to be lazy when it

comes to academics. They choose to stay all day on their phone enjoying social media

instead of doing certain tasks that is needed to be finished before the given due date.

Some people are aware of the procrastination amongst students even before the

pandemic—but the pandemic itself encourages some students to procrastinate due to

the change of learning methods. .Some students claim that because they are confined

to their own homes while they study, they get sluggish and take longer to complete

tasks. In addition, students rant their reason in procrastinating on social media apps—

1
a few from the many reasons are they have trouble balancing their studies with

household chores and rest. Despite the hardships of other students, other learners tend

to come up with excuses to further delaying actions.

These actions often hinder students from achieving their desired

academic goals. Academic procrastination can be regarded as behavioral, affective

and cognitive phenomenon which results from an individual’s fear of failure and task

aversiveness (Solomon & Rothblum ,1984). Fear of failure is somewhat related to low

self-confidence where individuals delay tasks because of fear or belief that they will

not succeed. Students with high confidence can somehow respond positively to the

academic challenges despite the difficulty of work. Task aversiveness, on the other

hand, is characterized by dislike of activities and anxiety which leads to

procrastination. Several studies have shown that procrastination also relates to various

personality factors and psychological constructs. Gender based studies revealed

differences in procrastination behaviors of male and female students. Male students

were found to procrastinate more than the female students (Khan et al., 2014; Ferrari

et al., 2009).

Self-motivation is also identified as one of the important correlates of

academic procrastination. Klassen, et al. (2010) found a significant link between

academic procrastination and motivation variables consisted of the students’ self-

efficacy, self-regulation and self-esteem. This explains that students who are

motivated to pursue success will be more active and willing to engage in their

academic tasks. In support, several studies also showed that self-regulation (Park &

Sperling, 2012), self-efficacy (Klassen, et al., 2008; Chow, 2011) and self-esteem

(Saleem & Rafique, 2012) were likewise significantly related to academic

procrastination. This shows that despite the difficulty of their job, students who have

2
higher levels of self-efficacy and self-esteem are more confident in their talents and

abilities and can react positively. Chu and Choi (2005) describe themselves as a

positive and active sort of procrastinators, despite a growing body of research

showing a negative association between academic accomplishment and

procrastination. Active procrastinators deliberately put off duties, perform better

under pressure, and are more likely to complete things successfully. Interesting results

showed that active procrastinators shared traits with non-procrastinators in terms of

attitudes, coping mechanisms, and performance. Procrastination in the academic

setting has been explained in a spectacular way over the years. The current report

acknowledges the necessity to continue addressing the pupils' problems, such in the

classroom, observed. There are currently only a few published studies that examine

the procrastinating patterns of Filipino students.

As per Floor and Denise (2014), procrastination is supported by studies

showing that procrastinators typically perform more poorly in various domains

including academic achievements and work activities, but also experience financial

drawbacks dew to procrastinating on taxes or failing to start retirement savings.

A study conducted by Steel et al. (2007), procrastination is the needless delay

of things one intends to do is a phenomenon that has accompanied humankind at least

since the times of Cicero and has intensively attracted researchers’ interest, especially

in the last four decades. It is a well-known phenomenon in everyday life. Study results

point to prevalence rates as high as 20–25% in the general population. The prevalence

rates of academic procrastination (i.e., procrastination of study-related activities; e.g.,

writing a term paper, studying for an examination) among university students are

considerably higher. Up to 70% of university students consider themselves, and 50%

procrastinate consistently and problematically students have reported that

3
procrastination typically accounts for more than one third of their daily activities and

is often carried out through sleeping, reading, or watching television. Men seem to

procrastinate slightly more than women, and procrastination seems to decrease with

age. However, considering the small correlations found in these studies in light of

their large sample sizes, the differences seem to be of limited informative value.

On the other hand, in the study of Dianne and Roy (2005), procrastinating is

variously described as harmful, innocuous, or even beneficial. Two longitudinal

studies examined procrastinations among students. Procrastinators reported lower

stress and less illness that non procrastinators early in the semester, but they reported

higher stress and more illness late in the term, and overall they were sicker.

Procrastinators also received lower grades on all assignment. Procrastination, thus,

appears to be a self-defeating behavior pattern marked by short-term benefits and

long-term costs.

Cao (2012) provided research showing that students' procrastination has

increased over the past few years to support this. There is, however, limited study that

explicitly contrasts academic procrastination between various academic grade levels.

In order to examine procrastination kinds and associated motivation between

undergraduate and graduate students, the current study adopted a self-regulated

learning viewpoint. Respondents to a packet of questions about their experiences in an

educational psychology class included sixty-six undergraduate and sixty-eight

graduate students. As a result, usefulness procrastination beliefs held more sway over

students' academic procrastination than self-efficacy beliefs or achievement goal

orientations. Procrastination styles were correlated with student age. Among graduate

students who procrastinated, younger students were more likely to participate in

4
active procrastination whereas older students tended to engage in passive

procrastination. Implications and future research are discussed.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In order to look into all essential data and information, this study prefers to respond to

the following questions.

1. How are the respondents’ socio-demographic profile described in terms of:

1.1 Name

1.2 Age

1.4 Name of school

2. How can you describe the reasons for students to procrastinate in terms of:

2.1 Distractions

2.2 Lack of motivation

2.3 Anxiety

2.4 Lack of confidence to do your job well.

2.5 Feeling directionless and unfocused.

3. How can you describe the consequences of procrastination in terms of:

3.1 Worse financial status

3.2 Reduced wellbeing

5
3.3 Worse academic performance

3.4 Stress

3.5 Lower performance

4. How difficult is it for you to decide what task to do first?

1.3 Significance Of The Study

This part of the chapter presents the various people that will benefit from the

conducted study. This study and its result will be beneficial to the following

Administrators. This may serve as a guide in planning, implementing, and

assessing what would be the best program to implement regarding how to overcome

the problem.

Guidance Counselors. This may help to give them an idea of the results and

conduct interventions to students experiencing extent procrastination. With their help

they will be able to craft a program that would combat the said problem

Students. This may improve their performance in class and increase their

level of academic performance.

Teachers. With the results, teachers may be able to give motivation to our

students with regard on how to stop. If not, prevent procrastination.

6
Future Researchers. This chapter describes several data collection and

analysis strategies that were used that are pertinent to the study.

1.4 Scopes and Limitations

The purpose of this study is to look into the phenomenological perspectives of Senior

High School students who have been procrastinating during the pandemic. The study

will concentrate on the students' individualized experiences and the strategies they

have used to deal with their delaying tendencies. Additionally, it will look into how

the epidemic has affected their delaying habits and the management techniques they

have used.

This study has some restrictions because it only includes students in

Senior High School. Additionally, it is restricted to only the procrastination during the

pandemic and excludes any other factors that might be impacting their behavior.

Additionally, a qualitative technique will be used to conduct the study, and it will only

focus on the experiences of the participants. Finally, it's possible that the findings

from this study won't necessarily generalize to other Senior High School or to

different situations.

7
1.5 Theoretical Framework

The theoretical framework is a form that can support a theory of a research

study. The theory presents and explains why the research problem under the study

exists. Thus, the theoretical framework should embody all the necessary knowledge

components.

It has been stated by Cakir, et al. (2010) that procrastination behavior which is

known as delaying the responsible behaviors that individuals have to carry out has

many different dimensions. One of them is adjourning to take into action for academic

tasks which are subjectively important to perform or it is the academic procrastination

which can be defined as the habit of adjourning and which is very common among

students.

There are currently two main academic theories regarding the psychological causes of

procrastination:

 Emotion-regulation theory, which states that procrastination occurs when

people prioritize their short-term mood over long- term goal achievement and

wellbeing, primarily by postponing aversive tasks in order to postpone

associated negative emotions.

 Temporal motivation theory, which states that procrastination occurs when

people’s motivation is low, which can happen because of some combination of

low-value outcomes, low expectations of achieving outcomes, high delay

before achieving outcomes, and high sensitivity to the delay of outcomes.

8
This theory explains, students frequently do things that are not

necessary, such as play online games or read through social media in order to divert

their attention from the tasks at hand. Additionally, the fact that they are easily

distracted explains why they lack motivation. This is what contributes to the

procrastination cycle’s extreme viciousness. The cornerstone of behaviorism is the

idea that when something is rewarded, we tend to repeat it. We are relieved in

delaying tasks.

It is also stated that emotion regulation is the capacity to exert control

over one’s own emotional state. It may entail actions like reflecting on a difficult

circumstance to lessen anger or worry, concealing outward signals of sadness or fear,

or concentrating on factors that make one feel pleased or at ease. It indicates that they

feel over burden by the events or circumstances that are currently occurring in their

lives.

Both theories are supported by substantial research, in the sense that they can

explain and predict many cases and aspects of procrastination. However, as shown in

the next sections, which elaborate on these theories, both theories are also limited, and

have been criticized on various grounds, as neither provides a perfect explanation of

procrastination.

The conceptual framework that was used in the study is the Input-Process-Output

Model as shown in figure 1. The IPO framework was used to show the process done

in studying the procrastination behavior of Senior High School students. In the IPO

Model, a process is viewed as a series boxes connected by inputs and outputs. Flow

charts and process diagrams are often used to represent the process (Harris and

10
Taylor, 1997). What goes in is the input; what cause the change is the process; what

comes out is the output (Armstrong, 2001). The IPO model provided the general

structure and guide for the direction of the study.

1.7 Definition Of Terms

For a better understanding to this study, the following terms are defined to better

grasp the context of this research:

Senior High School: A year level of education in most countries. They are the

target respondents of this research.

Pandemic: A global health crisis in which a disease is spreading rapidly and

widely. The term became one of the main reasons of procrastination amongst students

through the recent years.

Phenomenology: A philosophical and scientific approach that explores the

subjective experience of a phenomenon.

Procrastination: The act of delaying or postponing something. This term is the

main issue amongst students.

Review of Related Literature

INTRODUCTION
After the researchers completed a thorough and in-depth search, this chapter presents

the relevant literature and studies. The studies and literature discussed in this chapter

cover a variety of theories, notions, conclusions, and generalizations as well as

various research developments from the past to the present. Additionally, the chapter's

data compromise aids in familiarizing readers with information related to the current

study.

2.1 Literature Review

A study by Klingsieck (2013) Procrastination is a well-known phenomenon

that often entails negative outcomes with regard to performance and subjective well-

being. In an attempt to understand the (alarming) character of procrastination, a large

body of research on the causes, correlates, and consequences of procrastination has

been accumulating over the last 40 years. Procrastination is very common in the

university where students face a multitude of academic requirements such as

examinations, assignments and research works. Individuals may procrastinate for

various reasons. Some are observed to experience problems in time management, lack

of motivation to accomplish a task and inability to concentrate in one’s work. For

most college students, the challenge is how to be able to balance and manage their

studies in spite of the various activities inside and outside the academe. These actions

12
often hinder themselves from achieving their desired academic goals (Mandap, C.M,

2016)

Wang et al., (2022) states that the Covid 19 pandemic has a significant impact on

people’s learning and their lives, including a significant increase in the incidence of

academic procrastination and negative emotions.

In the same study Lopez et al., (2022) procrastination is a maladaptive

behavior that students often experience in academic activities and can result in

negative consequences to mental health. Such unreasonable conduct on a person's life

can be profound. Having this on the go serious mental health issues can result from a

particular habit. Furthermore Hussain et al., (2010) states that the tendency to

procrastinate is linked to stress, worry, or even worse, depression. Also, many studies

reported that academic procrastination has been associated with poor learning

outcomes and psychological difficulties. In the same study of Klingsieck et al., (2012)

plenty of research has emerged regarding academic procraatination, hardly any

research endeavor regarding procrastination in distance university settings exists.

Dikmen et al., (2021) and may also affect assignment completion times and dropout

rates from distance learning courses.

Findings of Herdian, et al., (2021) the COVID-19 pandemic can contribute

to increase procrastination behaviors in academic activities that the student does not

like and in those he/she is passionate. In the aspect of education, the pandemic has

changed the education system into online learning. In the same study Schraw et al.,

(2007) academic procrastination is most defined as actively delaying or deferring

work that must be performed in an academic setting. Another study by Hong et al.,

13
(2021) states that there is an increasing source of concern in the educational sector

especially in light of the present pandemic.

A study by Turmudi et al., (2021) defines procrastination as delaying

assignments in the hope of getting a lot of time to complete academic assignments,

lecturers gave assignments that are too difficult for the students to understand, hard to

find materials, lack of good internet signal, boring teaching methods, poor time

management, paying attention to other things, and helping our parents do house

chores.

Findings of Park et al., (2018) states that the globe continues to combat the

virus violent spread, schools and other learning spaces have been forced to transition

to complete online learning. The COVID-19 pandemic is posing a significant threat to

educational system. It has compelled the government to postpone national exams and

schools to close temporarily, end face-to- face education, and rigidly enforce physical

separation. These events have furled higher educations digital transition and tested its

capacity to adapt quickly and effectively. Schools adapted appropriate technology,

developed learner and staff resources, built systems and infrastructure, implemented

new teaching protocols, and revised curriculum. Students, parents, and educators

throughout the world have felt the unexpected rippling impact of the COVID-19

pandemic as schools have been shattered to deal with world wide pandemic.

According to Schmidt et al., (2020) the migration to a new learning space

has faced several major concerns relating to policy, pedagogy, logistics,

socioeconomic factors, technology, and psycho-social factors Students experienced

14
several challenges in a home learning setting, including a lack of technological

proficiency, high internet costs, and restricted interaction/socialization and amongst

students, according to the findings, the lockdown caused considerable interruptions in

students learning.

A study by Mandap.,(2016) the study explored the differences in

procrastination behaviors among the students in terms of gender, academic courses,

level of performance and level of academic self-efficacy. Responses were gathered

from the 200 students of Bulacan State University, Philpines. The hypothesized

difference in procrastination scores were analyzed using independent sample t-test.

Results revealed gender differences in procrastination where males students

procrastinate more than the female students. Students with low perceived academic

self efficacy shows significantly higher procrastination scores than those with high

self-efficacy.

2.2 Related Studies

According to Gonzales et al..(2020) says that the current

circumstance is unique as it could aggravate the challenges experienced during online

learning due to restrictions in movement and health protocols.

Another study by Gonzales et al,. (2020) states that there is the world,

it is critical to acquire a more detailed knowledge of students & online learning

experiences during the COVID-19 epidemic. In this unpredictable environment, it is

15
important to comprehend students; learning experiences during the lockdown in order

to deliver high-quality education in the future (Adedoyin, O.B., 2020).

While governments, front line workers, and health authorities do their

utmost to contain the spread, educational institutions strive to provide high- quality

education to all students during these tough times. Within the context of the COVID-

19 pandemic online learning has taken the status of interim remote teaching that

serves as a response to an exigency. Furthermore, when academic procrastinators are

learning at a distance, they are often inspired to begin but then want to quit after some

time (Michinov et al.,2011).

CHAPTER 3

Research methodology

INTRODUCTION

The research approach employed in the study is discussed in this chapter. The

geographical area where the study was conducted, the study design and the population

and sample are described. The instrument used to collect the data, including methods

implemented to maintain validity and reliability of the instrument, are described.

3.1 RESEARCH METHOD

In this study, the researcher used qualitative research method. Qualitative

research method was developed in the social sciences to enable researchers to study

social and cultural phenomena: observe feelings, thoughts, behaviors and the beliefs

of the mass society (Concept Publishing Company, 2008) Examples of qualitative

methods are action research, case study research and grounded theory. Ibid (1996)

Qualitative data sources include observation and participation observation, interviews

and questionnaires, documents and texts, and the researcher’s impressions and

reactions. (Ibid, 1996).

Qualitative research methods and non-numerical focus on discovering and

understanding the experiences, perspectives, and thoughts of participants. It is

subjective in nature. It is useful when you want to determine skills, opinions and

knowledge capability of people.

For this research, method of interview was employed. Interviewing of selected

individuals is a very important method often used by qualitative researchers. The

rationale for using the interview methods is to enable the researcher to find out what

20
is on their mind, what they Sthink and how they feel about something. (Macgraw-

Hill,2000).

3.2 RESEARCH DESIGN

Generally, research design means a structure to plan and execute a

particular research (Sage, 1998). Research design is the crucial part of the

research as it includes all the four important considerations: the strategy, the

conceptual framework, the identification of whom and what to study on and the

tools and procedures to be used for collecting and analyzing data (Ibid, 2007).

The research design basically is divided into several types for example qualitative

research and quantitative research. The research design basically is divided into

several types for example qualitative research and quantitative research. (Pearson,

2005).

3.3 SUBJECT OF THE STUDY

The researchers are looking for a small group of subjects who can give

vivid, in-depth accounts of their experiences. To obtain a variety of viewpoints

on procrastination behavior during the pandemic among Senior High school

students, the researchers may try to enlist participants from World Citi Colleges

(WCC). During the epidemic, all of the participants would have procrastinated,

which could have included putting off or avoiding tasks or commitments linked

to schoolwork, family duties, personal objectives, or other activities. The study's

participants would need to be open to being interviewed for the study and sharing

their perspectives on the pandemic's effects on postponing behavior. Participants

21
are both male and female students at WCC-Guimba who range in age from 16 to

20.

3.4 RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The researchers employed an interview for this study as primary data

collection tool. A semi structured approach was used as it allows the researchers

to quickly gather input, reaction and hence to produce results more quickly.

Senior High School Students at WCC-Guimba S.Y 2022-2023 who exhibits

procrastination in their academic work served as the researcher’s respondents.

3.5 DATAGATHERING PROCEDURE

After the plan and its tools have been produced and accepted by the

adviser, the data collection process will begin right away to carry on the study's

table.

 We will gather all of the students from Senior High School

 All of the students that is chosen will be able to answer our prepared

questionnaires for our interview

 Each student from Senior High School will be numbered using separate

slips of paper that has shuffled to a container/fish bowl and each slip will

be picked randomly one-by-one until we meet the desired number of

respondents via Fish Bowl Method

 Through the recordings, the answers of our respondents will be

transcribed one-by-one

 The answers we gathered will be used for the interpretation of Chapter 4

in terms of the RRLS, Findings of the table and Own Interpretation

22
CHAPTER 4

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF THE

DATA

The collected data and the presentation of the data matching to the answered

questions are both presented in this chapter of the conducted research. This section of

the research includes the relative analysis and interpretation of the data.

INTRODUCTION

The main goal of this study was to determine how the pandemic affected

senior high school students' procrastinating habits. The research's secondary goal was

to provide guidance and knowledge regarding procrastination.

The responses and experiences of the respondents gave the study's questions

further context. It was possible to learn useful information about the participants'

experiences with procrastination throughout the pandemic by listening to and

analyzing their comments. The study's questions are addressed in this chapter, along

with supporting information such as participant comments and quotes.

4.1 DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS

Weirs (2008) described a descriptive analysis as a part of an analysis that

focuses on the summarization and description of data that was retrieved from the

interview. This part was used to present the analysis of the demographic qualities of

the respondents that was gained from the interview, and used the analysis to generate

general observations from the data. As per Soloman (2010) the purpose of this paper

is to provide a summary of descriptive analysis research as well as to proposed

possible areas of future research.

23
4.2 BACKGROUND OF THE RESPONDENTS

The findings of this qualitative study were based on interviews with 11 senior

high school students from World Citi Colleges in Guimba, who kindly agreed to

donate their time to provide pertinent information for the study. All of the respondents

participated in the interviews via questionnaire.

The set of inquiries that are pertinent to the success of this investigation were

made to the chosen respondents by seven interviewees. The largest segment of the

study, with seven participants, was made up of grade 12 students. The four study

participants who remained in the smallest group were Grade 11 pupils.

The interviewees used their phones and conducted face-to-face interviews

with each participant. The phones made it possible to benefit from the transcription of

the audio interviews. The researchers themselves conducted the interview recording

and transcription; therefore, the transcripts of the interviews were completed within a

few days.

4.3 REVISIONS OF INTERVIEW PROTOCOL

The questions were posed in exact accordance with the format specified in the

original interview protocol. The majority of interviewers, however, frequently

followed up on structured questions with open-ended inquiries such as "Why?", "Why

not?" and "Is it because of this? This was the researchers' approach to gaining a

deeper comprehension of the input from the respondents.

4.4 RESEARCH RESULTS

Three distinct themes emerged from the collected research data. The major

themes discovered from the outcome of this research included:

24
1. The feedback of the respondents suggests that there are various

factors of procrastination.

2. Self-doubt of an individual prolongs the action of doing a task.

3. Procrastination behaviors are believed to lead to mostly bad

outcomes.

Theme 1 answered Questions 1, 2, and 12. The third, fourth, fifth, and seventh

research questionnaire questions were covered by the second theme. The researchers

found the answers in topic 3 for themes 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. Each theme is further

explored in detail below.

The first three items on the questionnaire—which served as theme 1 for this

study—were distributed to all eleven of the participants who were chosen to be the

respondents. The loud noises have been cited as a kind of distraction by six of the

eleven respondents. Two respondents, #11 and #5, state that their cellphones are a

distraction whenever they are attempting to complete a task. Respondents #9 and #11

said that social media was their distraction, while respondent #6 stated online games.

Meanwhile, according to responder number 10, his work served as a distraction.

Seven yes responses and four no responses were given in response to the second

question as ask them if they have motivations to their task. In response to the second

question, which asked participants if they were motivated to do their task, respondents

#2, #3, 5, 6, 7, 9, and respondent #11 said they were, whereas participants #1, #4, #8,

and #10 said they weren't, in response respondent #4 wala, kase kaya ko naman. As

per respondent #8 Wala lang, hindi ko kase iniisip yung mga bagay bagay kung

matatapos ko yung mga gawain ko o hindi. Respondent #8 and #10 has the same point

of answer as respondent #10 said kase tinatamad ako.

The respondent was asked if they were having trouble managing their time in

the final question. Eight of the respondents said yes, while the other three said no.

Respondent #8 noted that Ako as a student kapag may task ako na kailangan kong

gawin ko kaya ko matapos yun ng isang upuan lang, pero dahil nga tamad ako hindi

ko na magagawa kaya mag le-lead na sya sa procrastination. On the other hand, the

reamaining respondents expressed that they were having trouble managing their time,

here’s what respondent #1 shared Yes, tuwing maraming pinapagawa.

26
A study by Turmudi et al., (2021) defines procrastination as delaying

assignments in the hope of getting a lot of time to complete academic assignments,

lecturers gave assignments that are too difficult for the students to understand, hard to

find materials, lack of good internet signal, boring teaching methods, poor time

management, paying attention to other things, and helping our parents do house

chores.

The data gathered during the interviews revealed to the researchers that the

majority of the respondents are easily distracted by loud noises, which may account

for their procrastination. The third respondent claimed that he had trouble managing

his time due to the overwhelming amount of work. This may also be a reason why

some students put off doing their work since they feel under pressure and are unsure

of what to start with.

THEME 2: SELF DOUBT

RESEARCHER: Are you anxious to start your work? why or why not?

RESPONDENTS #1, #3, #4, #5, #6, #7, #9 & #11: Yes

RESPONDENT #2: konti

RESPONDENT #8 & #10: No

RESEARCHER: Are you not confident in doing your work? Why or why not?

RESPONDENTS #1, #5, #6, #8, #9, #10 & #11: Confident

RESPONDENT #2: Depende

27
RESPONDENT #3: Hindi

RESPONDENT #4: Minsan

RESPONDENT #7: Sakto lang

RESEARCHER: How procrastination becomes a way to lower self-esteem?

RESPONDENT #1 & #5: No idea

RESPONDENT # 2: Pag hindi mo nagagawa yung task, feeling mo mababa na

yung tingin mo sa sarili mo pag mababa yung score mo kasi hindi mo ginawa yung

best mo kasi nga nag procrastinate ka

RESPONDENT #3, #4, #6 & #8: Expectations and disappointment

RESPONDENT #7: Hindi makukuha ang goal

RESPONDENT #9: Nag ccause ng negative outcome ang pagpprocrastinate

RESPONDENT #10: wala silang ginawa iisipin nilang tamad sila

RESPONDENT #11: pag nabababad ka sa social media

Eight out of the eleven chosen participants stated that they are anxious

whenever they start to do their task, on the other hand seven participants says that

they are confident enough in doing their work. Participant #1 says “confident, kasi

alam ko sa sarili ko na ginagawa ko yung best ko.” and then the rest of the

participants says “no” “depende” “minsan” “sakto lang”. Respondents #3 #4 #6 #8

says that the way of how their self esteem become low because of procrastination

cause themselves expectations to their works and feel so disappointed later on because

of not being satisfied for what they have done because of the short period of time.

And the rest of them says #7 “hindi makukuha ang goal” #9 “Nag ccause ng negative

28
outcome ang pagpprocrastinate” #10 “wala silang ginawa iisipin nilang tamad sila”

“#11 pag nabababad ka sa social media” This can lead to feelings of anxiety and

guilt. It can also leave them feeling unproductive, lazy, and ineffectual. In others

words, it can affect the way they feel about themselves.

Furthermore Hussain et al., (2010) states that the tendency to procrastinate is

linked to stress, worry, or even worse, depression. Also, many studies reported that

academic procrastination has been associated with poor learning outcomes and

psychological difficulties. In the same study Lopez et al., (2022) procrastination is a

maladaptive behavior that students often experience in academic activities and can

result in negative consequences to mental health. Such unreasonable conduct on a

person's life can be profound. Having this on the go serious mental health issues can

result from a particular habit.

The remaining questions confirmed that low level of self-esteem has been

reflected as an important factor that results in certain self-defeating attitudes like

academic procrastination and low academic achievement. When asked, four out of

eleven has the same answer to the question “How procrastination becomes a way to

lower self-esteem?” they answered on how they expect their outcome of their work

will be good after of procrastination and then they’re disappointed later on if it it

doesn’t match their expectation. For the other answers like rspondents #9, it says

“Nag ccause ng negative outcome ang pagpprocrastinate” Which means that

procrastination can negatively affect learning, achievement, and quality of life; While

Respondent #2 says “Pag hindi mo nagagawa yung task, feeling mo mababa na yung

tingin mo sa sarili mo pag mababa yung score mo kasi hindi mo ginawa yung best mo

29
kasi nga nag procrastinate ka” it explains on how respondent #2 guiltripping his/her

self by procrastinating and by not doing enough on the task that is given to his/her. On

the other, Respondent #11 answered “pag nabababad ka sa social media” it indicated

on how social media made an impact and one of the reason to every procrastinator

why does their self steem become lower it is because their attention are too diverted to

social media instead of the work they needed to do. Meanwhile Respondent #10 says,

“wala silang ginawa iisipin nilang tamad sila” it explain their behavior and way of

thingking in such things that they’re aware of their actions and still manage to think

about their behavior instead of changing it. While the remaining Respondent #1 and

Respondent #5 says that they have no idea on how procrastination becomes a way to

lower self-esteem.

A self-defense tactic, procrastination hides a frail self-esteem. Self-worth

judgment is the definition of self-esteem. Low self-efficacy and self-esteem have a

direct linear relationship with procrastination and performance, which is independent

of fear of failure. Low self-efficacy and self-esteem also have a direct linear

relationship with personal characteristics, irrational thoughts, difficulty concentrating,

fear of failure, poor time management, poor problem-solving skills, and working

habits.

THEME 3: OUTCOMES

RESEARCHER: Do you think the procrastination of adults lead to poor budgeting

and irresponsibility in finance?

RESPONDENTS #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, #7, #9, #10 & #11: Yes

RESPONDENT #8: Depende

30
RESEARCHER: How does procrastination lead to an individual’s low self-esteem?

RESPONDENTS #2, #7, #8, #9, #10 & #11: Bumababa tingin mo sa sarili mo kasi

hindi mo ginawa ‘yong best mo.

RESPONDENTS #3, #4, #5 & #6: Disappointment

RESPONDENT #1: Wala akong idea

RESEARCHER: How does procrastination influences a student’s academic grade?

RESPONDENTS #3, #4, #5, #7, #8 & #9: Pangit nagiging outcome

RESPONDENT #1: Hindi natatapos and napapass ‘yong mga task.

RESPONDENT #2: Tamad ka kunware tapos ineexpect mo mataas na grade

makukuha mo kahit hindi mo ginawa best mo kasi nagprocrastinate ka.

RESPONDENT #6: Walang time management

RESPONDENT #10: Walang nagagawang task kasi nagproprocrastinate.

RESPONDENT #11: Nag-focus sa ibang bagay kaysa sa studies.

RESEARCHER: How does procrastination behaviors lead to stress?

RESPONDENTS #5, #6, #7, #8 & #9: Pressure

RESPONDENTS #3, #10 & #11: Loads of work

RESPONDENT #1: Wala akong maisip

RESPONDENT #2: Kapag tamad, mastrestress kasi wala kang nagagawa.

31
RESPONDENT #4: Mental breakdown

RESEARCHER: How does procrastination behaviors lead to thee horrible output of a

task?

RESPONDENTS #1, #2, #5, #6, #9 & #10: Kapag nagmamadali

RESPONDENTS #3 & #11: Bagay na na-miss out

RESPONDENTS #4 & #8: Naprepressure and hindi nagagawa ng maayos and

pangit na outcome.

RESPONDENT #7: Hindi namemeet ‘yong expectations

Majority of the respondents of this study believes that behaviors of

procrastination mostly result in negative or poor outcomes. Ten out of all the twelve

respondents have similar responses when asked if procrastination leads to

irresponsibility in finance and poor budgeting--they all have come to an agreement to

the question asked by their respective interviewer. Although one of the respondents,

which is Respondent #8, had a different opinion for the said question as she

Other respondents have also stated that prolonging in finishing a task will also

lead to poor academic scores and performance which then may influence them

mentally or when they encounter future opportunities and issues. Procrastination leads

to this unfortunate performance of students in their academics, as the respondents

have stated, due to poor time management and late submission of tasks--thus, the

32
students cram and rush their work to be able to pass the given task on time which has

been said by the participants as well.

Respondent #2 said,

“Tamad ka kunware tapos ineexpect mo mataas na grade makukuha mo kahit hindi

mo ginawa best mo kasi nagprocrastinate ka.”

While Respondent #11 responded with,

“Parang mas tinutuon mo yung atensiyon mo sa ibang bagay kaysa sa pag aaral mo

ganon.”

From a study conducted by Klingsieck (2013), it is stated that procrastination

is a common phenomenon that usually entails negative and poor results with regard to

performance and subjective well-being. A few are observed to experience issues

regarding time management, lack of motivation to finish a task and inability to focus

in one’s works. These problems often stop individuals from attaining their desired

academic goals (Mandap, C.M, 2016). In a different study, Wang et al. (2022) stated

that the rise of the Covid-19 pandemic left a major impact on people’s learning and

lives, including the increase in the incidence of academic procrastination and negative

emotions.

Meanwhile, Lopez et al. (2022) reported that procrastination is a maldaptive

behavior that is often experienced by students in academic activities which can result

in negative outcomes relating one’s mental health. Furthermore, Hussain et al. (2010)

states that the tendency iss linked to stress, anxiety or maybe even depression.

33
The researchers have discovered that procrastination only leads to negative

outcomes in different aspects of life such as in finance, self-esteem and academics.

An individuals self-esteem is torn whenever their accomplished task does not meet

their expectations or whenever they do see the poor results of their work, which then

progresses to a person’s disappointment, stress or worse feelings.

Although there are some parallels and variances between the thoughts

expressed by the respondents, the majority of their responses and remarks show that

procrastination will negatively impact their daily activities and work. This study shed

light on high school students' laziness throughout the pandemic. This belief appeared

to be shared by study participants.

34
CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

INTRODUCTION

A total of three sections make up this chapter. The comprehensive

summary of the researchers' findings is provided in the first section, which is

followed by their conclusions. This is followed by suggestions for further

investigation.

5.1 SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

The data that the researchers gathered revealed three themes. The three

themes that emerged from the data were used to further explain the findings.

THEME 1: FACTORS OF PROCRASTINATION

THEME 2: SELF DOUBT

THEME 3: OUTCOMES

Theme 1: Factors OF Procrastination: As stated by participants, some

of the factors in procrastination are distractions, being unmotivated, and a lack

of skills when it comes to time management when doing their task. The

respondents had different kinds of reasons for being distracted all the time.

Some of them stated that it was about social media, cellphones, online games,

and work. But the majority of the participants say that they are more distracted

by the noisy environment. And when it comes to motivation to do their task, a

lot of them agreed that they have enough motivation, and the rest of the

participants said no. On the other hand, the majority of the respondents agreed

that they’re truly struggling with time management. Theme 1 could be because

35
of Gadgets, in view of the fact that a lot of them are influenced by social

media, online games, and other applications that make them disengaged and

unmotivated to do their task.

Theme 2: As per the participants explanations about their behavior in

relation to their work or task, if they are anxious to start their task, and how

procrastination becomes a way to lower self-esteem, The majority of them said

yes, saying that they are really anxious if they try to start doing their work and

the rest say no. And when it comes to whether they have enough confidence to

do their task, a lot of them answer yes, and the rest say no. On the other hand,

This is where participants explain how procrastination becomes a way to

lower self-esteem; some of them have no idea, but others say and explain their

real feelings, saying that sometimes they’re guilt-tripping themselves,

expecting something, and then being disappointed later on, while others say

they're afraid of failing but still procrastinate. Theme 2 could be because of a

lack of confidence and believing in themselves when it comes to doing their

task. They didn’t have enough courage to fulfill what they needed to do in life.

Theme 3: Outcomes: This section tells the realistic part of our lives and

the consequences of what we have done through procrastination. The majority

of participants agreed that procrastination leads adults to poor budgeting and

financial irresponsibility because they might postpone cutting back on their

spending. Until you reduce your spending, you will not be able to save. And

the later you start saving, the less you will save. On the other hand,

participants also answered how procrastination led to an individual’s low self-

esteem, and they said it became a disappointment later on because they felt

like they were not doing enough good by delaying their task. They also say

36
that it becomes a bad outcome for their academics, and all of that explains

everything about how they’re catching a bad outcome that affects their lives

by still procrastinating instead of changing it for the better.

5.2 CONCLUSIONS

Based on the results of the analysis of the respondents' feedback, conclusions

about the research questions about senior high school students' procrastinating

behavior have been drawn. The following conclusions are drawn:

 In this investigation into senior high school students' procrastination habits

throughout the pandemic at World Citi Colleges, it was found that the

practice evolved during the epidemic. The effects of the new normal to the

students are heavy and intense. Senior high school students prefer to put off

tasks due to distractions including social media, loud noises, online gaming,

and work.

 The researchers concluded that a variety of other factors, such as the usage of

gadgets and social media, had a substantial detrimental impact on the

respondents' use of social media, contributing to their lack of motivation and

proclivity to be perfectionists.

 According to this study on senior high school students' ideas and opinions on

procrastination caused by their own lack of excitement and perfectionism, the

impact of the aforementioned conduct among senior high school students is

one of the key causes of their procrastinating behavior. The desire of

perfection impedes the completion of activities and assignments. There is no

37
doubt that you want to produce high-quality work, but issues may develop if

you establish unrealistic expectations and then fail to reach them.

 As a result of this diversion, students in senior high school risk becoming

completely engrossed with their own ideas, postponing work, and/or making

poor decisions. This is also a result of a perfectionist mindset. Because of

their expectation, which is a way of thinking that causes them to be afraid of

failing and causes them to expect something to come of their task even

though they are aware that they completed it on time, they put off finishing

their task rather than finishing it when they have enough time to complete it

perfectly the way they want it to be.

5.3 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR RESOLVING DELAY

The researchers made the following recommendations for senior high

school students and coming senior high school.

 Senior high school students must be aware of the negative

outcomes of procrastination.

 Senior high school students should find some motivations to

help them finish their works.

 Senior high school students must establish routine and use a

planner for time management

 Senior high school students should submit assignments or tasks

that given on or before the assignment or task dates

 Senior high school students must start and finish their task on

time to increase their motivation to start their next task.

38
 Senior high school students should have self-forgiveness; this

will help them to feel more positive about themselves and

reduce the likelihood of procrastination in the future.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE AND FURTHER RESEARCH

In light of the discussion of the findings of this study, the following

recommendations are offered based on the work accomplished during this

study and the conclusions given previously:

 Respondents - Choose a combination of people who have

trouble managing their time and who put things off.

 Implementation –In order to accommodate the respondents'

traits, the interview procedure should be altered. Concerning

procrastinating behavior, inquiries should address the

following.

 Follow Up Questions –In order to completely comprehend the

impressions and ideas of your respondents regarding a certain

subject, the use of open-ended and follow-up questions, such as

"why," is essential.

 Feedback – The thoughts and experiences of the chosen

respondents will be used to establish whether or not senior high

school students' procrastinating habits have been influenced by

the pandemic.

The goals of this study have been established, and the results of the data

collection have been described. Perfectionism and a lack of motivation have been

39
identified to be the main causes of procrastination among seniors in high school. The

results show that students' senior high school procrastination has been a serious issue

due to a lack of enthusiasm and perfectionism, which explains everything about how

perfectionism hinders the capacity to engage in tasks and assignments. Without a

doubt, you want to deliver high-quality work, but issues occur when you establish

unattainable objectives that you unavoidably fall short of. Self-criticism might result

from the constant strain you put on yourself because it lowers productivity and

effectiveness. The cycle repeats itself if you believe that your failure was the result of

a lack of effort. Even with a task that they don't find dull, the procrastinator still finds

it difficult to start since they are focused on progress rather than perfection and lack

motivation.

It is hoped that this research helped to illuminate and deepen our

understanding of how high school students perceive procrastination as a result of their

own lack of motivation. The research's conclusions and suggestions might also be

utilized as a springboard for future studies.
