Lets look at chapter 5 this is what I gathered from my reading of the material. The first thing that I gathered was that the chapter wanted to give insight on the developing and completion of a science lesson. The chapter begins by discussing the many component of the lesson starting with the major pieces the standards which are established by NSES which stands for the National Science Education Standard. ( p. 112 Teach. Scien.). These standards are set to make sure that every child receives the same type of education. Next are the objectives these are the instructions that are to be followed during the teaching process. Then the book goes further to introduce activities to enable the student to achieve the for mentions objectives. (p.116 Scien. Teach.) Finally the chapter adds the fact that an array of references are needed to assist the teacher in gathering the vast amount of knowledge and data to cover the many bases to be successful in the teaching arena. Then as the chapter continues there are different methods of implementing the science lessons such as the grouping of the students for instruction, i.e. whole group setting, cooperative group, pair, individual instruction strategies. (p.127 Teach. Scien.)
Application The method that really stood out to me was the grouping of students in the different variations; this one appealed to me the most because I could see myself using this method for several reasons. The whole group structure I would use for reading the group a story prior to breaking up into smaller groups to complete a cutting and gluing exercise that ties together with the story. I would use the cooperative groups to evaluate an experiment and come up with ideas as to why the experiment came out the way it did. I would then have them compile this data and have each group give their version of what they conclude has happened. Then using the pairs I would go further to have the children analyze a science experiment coming up with an even more finite conclusion. Then the individual piece would be one that I would use for analyzing the childs understanding of the subject matter that was investigated. I would also use this data to assess the childs interpretation or understanding of the material or data presented.
