Paragraghs

The document provides guidance on how to write good paragraphs. It explains that a paragraph should have a single unifying idea and changing topics requires starting a new paragraph. While there is no set word limit, examination paragraphs typically range from 100-125 words. The document then provides examples to illustrate paragraph structure, focusing on three topics - the role of books in society, for students, and in business - with each covered in a single paragraph.

How to write good paragraphs

Introduction
You must have heard terms-paragraph, Essay, article and report. All these are different compositions. Paragraph is the most basic
of them. All other compositions are consisting of paragraphs. Hence it is very important to understand nature of a paragraph to
write other compositions.

Unity of paragraph
Basic idea is that a paragraph should have one thing. This thing can be an idea, one part of an idea, one concept, one
aspect of a bigger concept or one dimension of a complex phenomenon. Whenever we change the idea, we should change the
paragraph. Two or more things should not be mixed in a single paragraph.

Size of paragraph
Different ideas might need different number of words to develop. We can’t put word limit for a paragraph. Paragraph can be as
small as a single line or it can be a full page paragraph.
But in examination we are given word limit in paragraph writing. Generally this word limit is 100 to 125 words. Most of
the time topics are such that we can write enough about them. We can use some examples to cover the word limit. In any case we
should respect word limit to score good marks.

Example
Let’s understand paragraph writing with an example. Suppose our topic is “books”. We can develop it in many ways by
focusing on different aspects. We can write on importance of books in religion. In this we’ll focus how books are needed for
spreading teachings of a religion. How holy books of all religions are the ultimate words of God that are interpreted in different
ways etc.

Similarly we can focus on roles of books in different sphere of life. Here we take three such paragraphs.
1) Books and society
2) Books and students
3) Books and Business.

Books and society

Books are our best companions. We cannot think of a civilized society without books. One can measure intellectual growth of a
society by the richness of books written by its members. A conserve fundamental country resists free flow of ideas and hence new
ideas can’t appear in their books. On the other hand in an open, modern and democratic country one can see many platforms for
the expression of ideas. Everyone can exercise this right without compromising other’s right. If we want to see cultural,
intellectual, spiritual development and not just economic growth of a country we must analyze the books written in that country in
last 100 years. Books are the true reflection of a country.

Books and students

Books are our best companions. We need books in all stages of life, but as a student we need them the most. Books help in
maintaining standards of study. All Students across the country get some quality material to study through books. This reduces the
dependency on teacher’s ability. Its obvious that we give more thought, do deeper contemplation in writing than in speaking.
Therefore books reflect filtered and refined ideas of an author. A well writing book helps in developing habit of self study in
students. This habit separates a brilliant student from an average one. Books are the only bridge between a student and true
knowledge.

Books and Business

Books are our best companions. Books provide business to writers, editors, publishers and distributors. Any business develops on
the necessity of society. Books are means of education, entertainment, literature, religion, business etc. They touch all aspects of
our life .A big business originates from here. There will be no educated, cultured or well-to-do person who has not purchased a
book in his life. Many people develop their livelihood on book writing and publishing. People write on and for children, women,
business, education, art of living, motivation, good governance, how to write English and the list goes on. There are many big

Last Sunday was very hot. Temperature was above 40 degree even in the morning. One could not dare to go outside. As if it was
not enough, electricity went off due to fault in transformer. Without fan and cooler it was really unbearable. We used hand fans,

face traffic jam, shortage of water and electricity, sewer blockage, water logging, crime and other problems of metro cities. So, we
have to adjust.

environment is calm and pollution free. A stream of water flows near my village, People are simple and their

People lead simple but happy life.

Reading
We gain knowledge in our life by experience or study. Under study comes reading, listening, watching and
writing. Out of these reading is the best skill to acquire maximum knowledge. We can read with our own
pace. We can pause to ponder. Most of precious knowledge of any society is stored in the books that can be
penetrated and gained only by a mind trained in reading. We should develop habit of reading by going
through books and other print material on variety of subjects. Nowadays there is focus on tuitions, coaching,
CDs and smart classes. This is diverting the attention from reading. It is not good in long run as practice of
self study is diminishing in students. They are dependent on others to gain knowledge. A student must
develop habit of reading and self study.

An interesting book you have read

Last month I came across a book in library. I read a small review from its flap. It stirred my mind so much that the next day, I
rushed to market, purchased a copy of it and stared its reading. The book was “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. It’s a
world renowned book. Napoleon Hill spent many years of his life to meet and interview the most successful people of the
world. He discovered a truth that lays behind all success stories across the borders and cultures. He proposed that “Anything that
a human mind can conceive and believe can become reality”. This concept is soul searching. It encourages that we need to
develop capacity to think, to think big and think clearer. Our target should be crystal clear and our belief should be rock strong.
We should not worry about resources and struggle. This book is a real jewel of my small collection of books.

of things. In a good bazaar we can find anything from needle to car. Since there are many shopkeepers selling same articles
we can do bargaining .In this atmosphere of competition customer is he winner. We can get things cheaply. Bazaar is a place of
enjoyment also. Many people do window shopping. They only watch and know about the latest articles coming in the market.
One can find many eatables stalls and shops in the market .Thus Bazaar is a place where sellers and buyers meet. Both are
benefited. Activities of bazaar are the most important for any economy.

very grand. It was built by Mugal emperor shahjahan in the sweet memory of his queen Mumtaz mahal. It’s a symbol of love and
considered one of the wonders of the world. I touched it. It was very smooth and cool. There were beautiful crafted panels depicting
Flowers, leafs etc. We sat in the back side of Taj. Yamuna river was flowing near by. I felt like heaven. We stayed there for
sometimes. Then we took some snaps. We spent the whole day there. We were tired. We came back by in the night train. Memory
of that day is still fresh in my mind.
Exercise for students

We must do exercise to keep our body and mind fit. As a student one has to acquire lots of new knowledge on variety of
subjects daily. This needs physical and mental soundness. Only a healthy body contains healthy mind. We can join gym, do yoga,
walking, jogging or swimming. By doing exercise our heart beat increases and body temperature goes up. This cleanses the body
and relaxes the mind. It also reduces our stress. Exercise increases our efficiency in all works and reduces our chances of falling
ill. It improves our immunity. It also improves many mental capabilities like concentration, penetration, memorizing and recalling.
So, exercise is the must for students.

Corruption is a virus eating on our roots. It has many forms like bride, Favor, adulteration, non performance of duty etc. It has
many reasons for spreading universally. The main reason is greed. Most of the big corruption cases involve rich people. Other
reasons are inflation, poverty and corrupt system. A society cannot grow with corrupt practices. We must get rid of it. Government
should make strict laws against it. Public awareness should be increased. Recently Anna hazare led a movement for strong lokpal
bill. Public came out in large number in his support. Now Corruption is a hot issue in Indian politics. It is high time to uproot this
menace from our society.

Visit to a fair
Last Sunday I went to see a fair. I went with my friend. We went by bus. We reached there at 10 am. There was a long Queue for
tickets. We stood in the queue. Our Turn came after one hour. We went inside. There was much crowd. There were many stalls.
Some shopkeepers were shouting to attract the people. Firstly we went in “mirror house”. There were mirrors of many shapes
which reflected distorted images. Some showed you very long and thin. Some showed you very flat. It was really amusing. Then
we went to see a magic show. We participated in shooting competition. My friend won a T-shirt. There was a separate compound
for swings, see-saws and round about. We took a ride on a giant wheel. We spent the whole day in the fair. We were tired. We
came back home late night. Memory of that day is still fresh in my mind.
