Course overview
Description
Welcome to English for Career Development, a course created by the University of Pennsylvania,
and funded by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Office of
English Language Programs.

This course is designed for non-native English speakers who are interested in advancing their
careers in the global marketplace. In this course, you will learn about the job search, application,
and interview process in the United States, while comparing and contrasting the same process in
your home country. This course will also give you the opportunity to explore your global career
path, while building your vocabulary and improving your language skills to achieve your
professional goals.

Learning Objectives and learner outcomes


Unit 1: Entering the Job Market

In this unit you will learn about the steps in the job search process.

 Review the course structure, different learning options, and overall course objectives
 Identify the steps in the job search process
 Define and accurately use content-related vocabulary in course activities and games
 Identify word forms to expand your vocabulary
 Compare and Contrast the job search process in the US and your home country
 Review a variety of texts and multimedia sources
 Demonstrate your understanding of these texts and key course ideas through
comprehension check quizzes and a discussion board response
 Tell the difference between simple present and present progressive in course activities and
games
 Use phrases for compare and contrast in the discussion board responses

Unit 2: Resumes
In this unit, you will learn how to describe yourself and your experiences in a résumé. The unit
will also help you build your job-related vocabulary.

 Recognize the key components of an American style resume


 Produce your own 1-page resume
 Identify and practice using action verbs
 Use key words in your resume
 Review a variety of texts and multimedia sources and show understanding of these texts
and key course ideas through comprehension check quizzes

Unit 3: Writing a Cover Letter

This unit focuses on another important document for job-seekers: the cover letter. You will
learn how to write a clear cover letter that tells employers why you are the right person for the
job.

 Review the structures and format of cover letters and standard business letters
 Identify new fundamental vocabulary, and practice using that new vocabulary in course
activities
 Review a variety of texts and multimedia sources and show understanding of these texts
and key course ideas through comprehension check quizzes
 Identify and practice using past tense and present perfect verbs, sentence structure with
time words, and controlling tone with modal verbs

Unit 4: Networking

This unit will teach job-seekers language for meeting new people, making small talk, and
describing

 Recognize and use the language of networking and small talk


 Identify new fundamental vocabulary, and practice using that new vocabulary in course
activities
 Review a variety of texts and multimedia sources. Show your understanding of these texts
and key course concepts through comprehension check quizzes
 Identify and practice using stress, rhythm, and intonation to show meaning and emphasis
as you deliver a brief networking elevator speech
 Describe yourself briefly and clearly in a networking elevator speech

Unit 5: Interviewing for a Job

This unit is about the question-and-answer process of job interviews, and will help prepare
learners to present themselves well in interviews.

 Distinguish different types of questions used in job interviews


 Identify new fundamental vocabulary, and practice using that new vocabulary in course
activities
 Review a variety of texts and multimedia sources. Show your understanding of these texts
and key course concepts through comprehension check quizzes
 Identify and practice using stress, rhythm, and intonation to show meaning and emphasis
as you answer questions
 Prepare and answer an interview question briefly and clearly
