This document contains information about an exam for a 5th year, 2nd semester electrical and computer engineering student. The exam covers CAPA (ECEg5252) and contains two parts:
1) Short answer questions comparing load flow techniques.
2) Multiple calculation problems involving sparse matrix representations, a 2-bus power flow problem, generator parameters, and developing a power-angle equation based on a system diagram.
The exam is 1.5 hours and only allows a scientific calculator. It contains both conceptual and calculation based problems typical of a power systems engineering course.

[First Name] [Middle Name] [ID No.] Course Title: CAPA (ECEg5252) Exam Date: 08/9/2014 E.C Name of Instructors: Dawit A. Time allowed: 1&½ Hrs. Material allowed: Only scientific calculator PART- I Discuss and explains the following questions briefly and clearly (1.5%) 1. Compare and contrast Guass-Seidal, Newton-Raphson and Fast Decoupled Load Flow Technique? (1.5 pts.) PART-II Workout the following questions with all necessary steps (8.5%) 2. If the sparse matrix is represented by compress sparse row (CSR) format in memory storage as shown in the Table below. a) Recreate the original sparse matrix from CSR format (storage scheme 2)? (2 pts.) b) Save the original sparse matrix in storage scheme 1? (1 pt.) c) Save the original sparse matrix in storage scheme 3? (1.5 pts.) Bus 1 is a slack bus having a voltage phasor V1 = 1 0o pu. a) Determine voltage phasor at bus 2 (V2) using FDLF method up to three iteration and voltage initialization at bus 2 is flat voltage start. (3 marks) b) Calculate the slack bus active and reactive power? (1 marks) A 60 hz synchronous generator having inertial constant H = 9.94 MJ/MVA and a transient reactance x’d = 0.3 per unit is connected to an infinite bus through purely reactive circuit as shown in figure below. Reactance’s are marked on the diagram on a common system base. The generator is delivering real power of 0.6 per unit, 0.8 pf lagging to the infinite bus at a voltage of V = 1 per unit.
A 50 Hz synchronous generator has a transient reactance of 0.2 per unit
and an inertial constant H of 5.66 MJ/MVA. The generator is connected to an infinite bus through a transformer and a double circuit transmission line as shown in Figure below. Reactances are expressed on a common MVA base as marked on the diagram. The generator is delivering a real power of 0.77 per unit to bus bar 1. The voltage magnitude at bus 1 and the infinite bus voltage are 1.1 and 1.00o per unit respectively. Determine the generator excitation voltage and obtain the power – angle equation
