APPLICATION
The module is designed to control and monitor the Eclipse circuit breaker manufactured by Hawker Siddeley Switchgear Ltd. The module provides the following supervision: Continuous Trip Circuit Supervision of actuator and control circuit. CB Monitoring. Disconnector Position Monitoring.
The module provides the following control: CB trip, close and auto reclose control. Controls the maximum pulse length of a close signal to the actuator. Co-ordinates the correct operation of the actuator when trip and close signals occur simultaneously. Anti-pump close control.

3.2
INTRODUCTION
The module comprises of three PCBs a Processor/Indication board, PSU/ I/O Board, a Control board with Capacitor Close circuitry. The Processor/Indication board is mounted at the top of the module, containing the control logic to initiate and control the close signal. A PIC micro-controller monitors the Disconnector and Circuit Breaker, and six LEDs for CB Position, Selector In Use, Trip Circuit Supervision, Circuit Breaker Healthy, Aux. Wiring Healthy, CB Close counter and the remote test connection for CB operation/indication of the Eclipse. The second PSU/I/O board contains the Power supply, monitoring components and remote alarm relay drives. The third Control board contains the four power relays for actuator control with an optocoupler for actuator Trip Circuit Supervision (TCS) along with the capacitor charging circuits and switching relays for the fast close operation.
3.3
The module uses a quad and a dual optocoupler to monitor the Trip Circuit. The quad optocoupler is used to monitor the trip control circuit and a dual to monitor the actuator circuit. As illustrated on the General Block Diagram, monitoring current is continually flowing in the two branches of the trip circuit. If any part of the two branches becomes open circuit then one or more of the optocoupler transistor outputs will go low, causing the TCS LED to flash, initiate a Remote TCS Alarm and prevent CB closing after a 500mS delay. This would also occur if the actuator or trip relay coil became open circuit. Circuit breaker position indication is deactivated when the trip circuit is unhealthy, to prevent incorrect position indication. Position indication is reactivated when the trip circuit is returned to its healthy state. The alarm condition can only be reset when the trip circuit is returned to its healthy state. NOTE: The Trip Circuit Supervision feature is not designed to be used as a supply voltage monitor.
3.4
CLOSE CONTROL
The substation battery is used to supply the charging energy for the close capacitors mounted external to the module, as well as energy for a close operation. This is because it acts as the bottom stage of a capacitor divider network. These close capacitors are charged in parallel to the battery, as illustrated on the block diagram. With the Disconnector Access cover closed, the close supply is connected to J2-12. When the Close handle is operated, it connects this supply to J2-7, which initiates a close operation. This close signal is fed into an electronic anti-pump circuit which checks that the circuit breaker is open and that no trip signal is present before outputting the close signal.
The Electronic Anti-pump circuit contains the following features: a) Limits the closing pulse to 300mS if CB fails to Close. b) The close pulse is cut off by a successful CB Close. c) Close signal must be removed before next close operation is attempted.
ECLIPSE RANGE OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL MANUAL NO. 55/4201 Issue 2/08 2
ECLIPSE RANGE This output then energises relay RLY6 on the Control board 2802588-9, which switches the external close capacitors in series with the battery. This effectively gives a nominal closing supply of 2xthe battery voltage. At the same time the two power relays connected in series operate on the control board to close the CB and interrupt the close actuator current. A minimum close pulse of 50mS must be applied to the module for a successful close operation After the close operation relay RLY6 used to switch the capacitors in series de-energise. This effectively switches the capacitors in parallel with the battery. The capacitors then start to recharge through the current limiting resistor. The close pulse MUST NOT exceed 100mS for autoreclose operation.
3.5
TRIP CONTROL
When a trip signal is applied across terminals J2-4 & J2-5 it energises two power relays on the control board to trip the CB and interrupt the trip actuator current. This relay is not controlled by logic, so CB operation or the removal of the trip signal, which ever is the shortest, determines the relay ON time. In the unlikely event of the Eclipse failing to trip the cause of the problem needs to be identified before attempting to send another trip signal to the control module. NOTES: 1) The CB cannot be electrically tripped when the Disconnector is in the Earth Position. 2) ONLY VOLT FREE contacts are to be wired in parallel across J2-4 & J2-5
3.6
The modules again use optocouplers to monitor the position of the disconnector. transistor outputs from these are: -
a) Fed into the PIC microcontroller for monitoring b) Used to drive the base of open collector transistor outputs via another optocoupler used for isolation. These transistors drive the remote relay contacts. The PIC then uses these signals to monitor the position of the disconnector and if an invalid sequence is detected (e.g. change of disconnector position without the Selector In Use being detected) the Aux. Wiring Healthy LED will flash and a Remote General alarm signal is triggered.
3.7
Each CB operation is timed and compared to pre-set timing by the PIC. The timer is started when the PIC receives a valid Close or Trip command depending on the position of the CB and stops when the Aux. Switch changes state. If the time falls outside the pre-set time the Circuit Breaker Healthy flashes and a General Alarm signal is triggered. A subsequent operation of the CB within the pre-set timings will clear the alarm. The operating supply voltage and charge state should be checked to ensure full charge and further CB operations should be performed (with the disconnector in the OFF position).

NOTES: 1. The Trip Control Circuit connections are from J1-4 to J1-9 and J2-4 to J2-6. Optocoupler devices are connected in parallel with each microswitch and across the Trip Input with resistors in series with each diode of the optocoupler device to monitor the Trip Control Circuit. This requires the external wiring to form a continual loop with a continuous current being passed through the circuit for the optocoupler to monitor. This means that if a microswitch is open then the voltage measured on that pin is going to be the supply to that microswitch minus the voltage drop across the resistor as noted by (Resistor Volt drop) in the description. 2. ONLY VOLT FREE CONTACTS are to be fitted in parallel with J2-4 and J2-5 to J2-6. If a +VDC supply is connected to J2-5 or J2-6 then the module will attempt a trip even if the CB is already Open and if the Isolator is in the Earth Position. 3. The Actuator Circuit is monitored in a similar way to the trip control circuit with an optocoupler connected across the Trip Contactor contacts. See note 1 for description of operation and reason for volt drop measured at Pins J4-2 & J4-3.

7.4
If the TCS Healthy LED continues to flash after checking the above, the next step is to ascertain the module is receiving the correct inputs. This is achieved by measuring voltages in the two trip circuits to ensure that there are no breaks in the wiring. To aid this the circuits shown on pages 15-23 show the voltages that would be expected on each terminal of the trip circuit with all contacts OPEN. This means that the CB must be OPEN, the disconnector in the Earth position (Bus-Coupler if applicable) and NO trip signal present. The voltages shown assume the open circuit supply to be either: 110VDC 120VDC 130VDC Shown in RED text Shown in BLUE text Shown in MAGENTA text
For Feeder/Incomer Panels use pages 15 & 17, 18 & 20 or 21 & 23 to check. For Bus-section Panels use pages 16 & 17, 19 & 20 or 22 & 23 to check. All voltages shown are ideal therefore values shown are +/-10%.
