KP 1 - Logic/Activity 4.

1 Deterministic Logic
Introduction:

The task at hand necessitated employing Prolog, a programming language that is commonly
utilized in the realms of artificial intelligence and logic programming, to design a program
capable of representing a family tree. More specifically, the task involved constructing a
program that could delineate a family tree comprising several individuals and their
interrelatedness, taking into account an array of distinct relationships like those between parents
and children or siblings and descendants, and ensuring that the program could infer relationships
based on the provided information and furnish responses to questions regarding the family tree.
To commence, the first phase of the task entailed developing a program that could represent the
family tree while ascertaining the program's aptitude in encapsulating relationships between
family members, which was accomplished by enunciating a series of rules that epitomized
different sorts of relationships, for instance, parent-child relationships, and utilizing said rules to
construct a family tree, subsequent to which the program was tested by making inquiries of the
family tree and verifying that the relationships inferred by the program concurred with the actual
relationships. The second phase of the task involved scrutinizing the program's ability to deduce
relationships and respond to queries related to the family tree, which was achieved by subjecting
the program to a series of questions and verifying that the program's answers were accurate.

Method and Results:

Prolog code was written to define family relationships and rules for querying them. The code
was run in a Prolog tool (Swish) to test the defined relationships and rules. The code successfully
defined family relationships and rules for querying them. Queries were made to test the code,
and the expected results were obtained. Any issues or limitations in the initial code were
identified and addressed.
The general course of action I pursued to implement the assigned task can be delineated as
follows:
Task 1: A Prolog program was entered, defining a family tree through parent-child relationships
and logical rules. The mother and father relationships were established and used to define parent
relationships. Descendants were defined as those having a parent-child relationship or being
descended from an ancestor. Brothers were identified as male siblings with the same mother.
This formed the foundation for the subsequent tasks. The image denoted as Figure 1 represents a
snapshot of the code, while Figure 2 portrays a visual depiction of various outputs generated by
the code when executed on the Swish platform.

Task 2: A Prolog query was used to ascertain whether Jane is a descendant of Victoria,
returning a positive result. Figure 3 portrays a visual depiction of the outcome generated for this
task when executed on the Swish platform.

Task 3: A fact was added to the program, indicating Sarah as the mother of Ben. A Prolog
query was then used to determine the ancestors of Ben, revealing that Ben is a descendant of
Sarah, Jane, and Thomas. The image denoted as Figure 4 represents a snapshot of the code, while
Figure 5 portrays a visual depiction of output generated by the code when executed on the Swish
platform.

Task 4: Having identified several limitations with the existing brother rule, which failed to take
into account siblings with the same father and did not provide a means of handling cases with
multiple siblings, i used a new brother rule that utilizes the sibling rule for identifying siblings
and enforces the condition that the sibling in question is male in order to identify brothers more
specifically.
Task 4.1: Issues with the original brother rule were identified, including its failure to consider
siblings with the same father or multiple siblings and its tendency to consider someone their own
sibling.
Task 4.2: A new brother rule was proposed, utilizing the sibling rule to identify brothers
specifically by adding the condition of being male.
Task 4.3: The brother rule in the program was modified to incorporate the new rule, identifying
male siblings through the sibling rule. Testing revealed that this new brother rule addresses the
limitations of the original rule and can handle cases with multiple siblings.
The image denoted as Figure 6 represents a snapshot of the code, while Figure 7 portrays a visual
depiction of various outputs generated by the code when executed on the Swish platform.

In order to replicate the work described in the given tasks, one must possess a comprehensive
understanding of Prolog programming language, as well as a familiarity with the syntax of
defining logical rules and facts that would define a family tree with facts about parents and
children, and use them to determine parent-child relationships and descendants. Additionally,
they would need to possess the skills to define the mother and father relationships between
individuals and use them to define the parent relationship, as well as to define the descendant
relationship, which is determined by parent-child relationships or being a descendant of one of
their ancestors. Moreover, they would need to define the brother relationship between siblings
with the same mother and are male, and then utilize Prolog queries to test the program and verify
the existence of certain relationships or the addition of new facts to the program to query for new
relationships.
The outcomes of the tasks demonstrated the program's effectiveness in defining and determining
parent-child relationships and descendants, as well as the brother relationship between siblings
with the same mother and are male. Furthermore, the program was modified in Task 4 to address
issues with the original brother rule and was able to successfully identify brothers based on the
male gender condition of the sibling. The accuracy of the outcomes was verified by performing
multiple Prolog queries and confirmed that the program was successful in effectively defining
and determining the relationships within a family tree.

Discussion and Conclusion:


Through the completion of several tasks, a Prolog program was developed to define a family tree
with factual data on parents and children, and logical rules were utilized to establish parent-child
relationships and descendants. Furthermore, deficiencies with the initial brother rule were
recognized, and an alternative rule was proposed, leveraging the sibling rule to identify brothers
and incorporating the condition that the sibling must be male. In Task 2, the program was tested
by verifying whether Jane is a descendant of Victoria, resulting in a true outcome. In Task 3, a
new fact was added to the program that designated Sarah as the mother of Ben, and queries for
Ben's descendants returned Sarah, Jane, and Thomas. In Task 4, inadequacies with the original
brother rule were identified, and a new rule was suggested, which effectively identified brothers
by requiring the sibling to be male. Through testing the revised program with multiple queries, it
was confirmed that it resolved the shortcomings of the original rule.
The analysis of the outcomes indicates that Prolog is a potent language for defining and
establishing relationships in a family tree. Logical rules enable efficient and accurate
identification of complicated relationships, including parent-child connections and descendants.
Additionally, the study highlights the importance of meticulously considering the rules and
conditions used to define relationships, as shown by the limitations of the original brother rule.
By addressing these concerns, accuracy and effectiveness in the program were enhanced.
The task provides valuable insights into the use of Prolog to define and establish relationships in
a family tree. The modifications made to the original program emphasize the significance of
meticulous consideration of the rules and conditions employed in defining relationships and
demonstrate the effectiveness of Prolog in establishing complex relationships.

Week ANN 4 Bring it together/In class
activities/Activity 9.3 Playing with Deep Learning
Introduction:

The aim is to build a deep learning model that can classify images of clothing items into their
respective categories. The dataset used is Fashion-MNIST, which is a more challenging and
modern version of the commonly used MNIST dataset. The choice of using deep learning and
image processing techniques for this task is motivated by their potential applications in real-
world problems, such as object recognition and self-driving cars.
Jupyter Notebook is used as the programming environment due to its interactive nature and
visualization capabilities. The project involves exploring and preprocessing the dataset,
designing and training the model, and evaluating its performance on the test set. One important
consideration is avoiding overfitting, which is when the model performs well on the training data
but poorly on the test data.

Method and Results:

In this task, a Deep Learning model was trained on the Fashion-MNIST dataset using
TensorFlow and Keras libraries. The dataset consists of 70,000 grayscale images of clothing
items belonging to 10 different categories. The images were split into training and testing sets
with 60,000 and 10,000 images respectively. The training set was used to train a Convolutional
Neural Network (CNN) model with 3 convolutional layers, 3 max pooling layers, and 2 dense
layers. The model was trained for 10 epochs with a batch size of 32 and last layer dropout 0.4
and achieved an accuracy of 91.00% on the test set.
To evaluate the performance of the model, a confusion matrix was generated to see how the
model performed for each of the 10 categories. The confusion matrix showed that the model
performed well for most categories, with some categories having higher accuracy than others. To
prevent overfitting, various techniques such as dropout and data augmentation were used during
training. The effect of dropout on the training and validation accuracy was analyzed by plotting
their respective accuracy curves. It was observed that the use of dropout helped to prevent
overfitting. Figure 8 presents several test case outcomes of the Fashion-MNIST dataset.

Deep learning and image processing have numerous potential applications, including:

surveillance systems.

Overfitting is a frequently encountered issue in machine learning, where a model demonstrates


proficiency on the training data but fails to perform on fresh, unobserved data. Fundamentally,
the model has absorbed the specific intricacies of the training data excessively, making it unable
to generalize to fresh data. This issue typically arises when the model is excessively intricate
compared to the quantity of training data or when the training data does not represent the test
data. In the case of the Fashion-MNIST dataset, overfitting can occur when the model is too
complex for the small size of the dataset, leading to the model learning the specific intricacies of
the training data too well and performing poorly on new data.

To potentially improve the prediction on the test data and minimize overfitting in this example,
some possible steps are:
1. Using regularization techniques such as L1 or L2 regularization to add a penalty term to
the loss function, discouraging the model from overfitting.
2. Reducing the complexity of the model, such as by reducing the number of layers or
neurons in the neural network.
3. Increasing the amount of training data or using data augmentation techniques to create
additional training samples.
To repeat the work, one would need to download the Fashion-MNIST dataset, which is readily
available online. The dataset consists of 70,000 grayscale images of 28x28 pixels, representing
10 different categories of clothing items. The dataset is split into 60,000 training images and
10,000 test images.
The data was preprocessed by normalizing the pixel values and one-hot encoding the target
variable. A deep learning model was then built using Keras with TensorFlow backend. The
model consisted of three layers of convolutional neural networks followed by two fully
connected layers. The model was trained for 10 epochs with a batch size of 32. The results need
to be shown that the model achieved an accuracy more than 91% on the test data. This is a good
result considering that the model was trained on only 60,000 images and the Fashion-MNIST

In Class/Activity 10.3 Combining ANN and GA
Introduction:
This task centered around the application of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and Genetic
Algorithms (GAs) to attain optimal weights for a particular problem. The first task involves
executing pre-existing code with varying expected outputs and scrutinizing whether it trains
successfully. In the second task, an evolutionary approach utilizing GA is employed to discover
the weights that optimize a given problem in Week ANN 1/In Class/Activity 6.3. The purpose of
these activities is to provide practical experience in working with ANNs and GAs to obtain
optimal weights.

The first task allows for practicing with pre-existing code and evaluating the ANNs' responses to
different expected outputs. The second task involves employing a GA to determine the optimal
weights for a particular problem via an evolutionary approach. Part B of the second task focuses
on modifying the code to identify both sets of weights by running the code only once,
demonstrating GA's efficiency in solving multi-objective problems. In Part C, learners will
discover how to utilize the concepts learned to identify a set of weights to control a robot,
enabling the application of the principles learned in a practical scenario. Overall, the aim is to
provide a comprehensive understanding of the principles governing ANNs and GAs and how

Method and Results:

Task 1 involved running a pre-existing code with different expected outputs to determine
whether it trains. The code created an ANN with one input layer, one hidden layer, and one
output layer. To carry out the task, the Trinket platform was used to execute the code with
various expected outputs, and the results were documented. The code was designed to train the
ANN using backpropagation with a sigmoid activation function. By altering the expected output,
we could evaluate whether the ANN could learn and generalize to new inputs. The expected
output was modified several times to assess the network's performance, and the results were
analyzed. The obtained results demonstrated that the ANN was capable of learning and
generalizing to new inputs, as it was able to correctly classify the expected output in each trial.
This suggests that the ANN was properly trained and is capable of accurately classifying new
inputs. Figure 9 provides a snapshot of the code used to generate different expected outputs,

quality of the candidate solutions, and the GA algorithm selects the best individuals for
reproduction, where the offspring are created by combining the genetic material of the parents.
The parameters for the GA algorithm, such as population size, chromosome size, mutation rate,
and crossover rate, can be set accordingly. A GA object is created and the evolve() method is
called for a specified number of generations to find the best set of weights. Finally, a robot with
the optimal set of weights is created and tested on a new task to determine its performance. The

object and run the evolve() method for a specified number of generations to determine the
optimal set of weights and create a robot with the best set of weights to test its performance on a
new task, such as following a specific path, avoiding obstacles, or reaching a specific goal. The
results of Task 1 revealed that the ANN was able to train and produce the expected outputs for
the given inputs, while the results of Task 2 demonstrated the efficacy of the GA in discovering
the optimal weight set for the given problem and the robot's successful performance on a new
task.

Discussion and Conclusion:

After running the code for different expected outputs, it can be seen that the program
successfully trained the neural network with the given inputs and outputs. The neural network is
trained to make predictions based on the given input data. The training process involves
adjusting the weights and biases in the neural network through backpropagation. As a result, the
neural network becomes more accurate in making predictions as it goes through more training
cycles. The program's output displays the predicted values for each input, along with the actual
values and the difference between them. An evolutionary approach in Week ANN 1/In
Class/Activity 6.3 could be used to find the weights by creating a population of candidate
solutions, where each solution represents a set of weights. The fitness of each solution is then
evaluated by running the neural network with the corresponding weights on a set of input data
and comparing the predicted outputs to the expected outputs. The fittest solutions are then
selected for breeding, where their weights are combined and mutated to create new candidate
solutions. This process is repeated over multiple generations until a satisfactory set of weights is
