Reading Passage: PAPARAZZI
The word paparazzi was first used in the Italian film La Dolce Vita. One of the characters in the
film was a photographer and his name was Paparazzo. In Italian this means an annoying noise
made by a mosquito. Since the film La Dolce Vita was first shown in 1960, the Word paparazzo
has been used all over the world to describe news photographers.

Paparazzi usually sell photographs to gossip magazines and tabloid newspapers for large
sums of money. But they are often accused of ´hunting´ celebrities to get a good
photograph. The intense interest is a reminder of just how fascinating we find celebrity -
and how difficult it can be for celebrities themselves to cope with the intrusive interest.
Some famous people have even said that their private lives have been destroyed by the
paparazzi.

Several celebrities have complained that their children are followed on the way to school. Actress Julia Roberts, driving
a Mercedes SUV, recently ran a man off the road, got out of her car and demanded he stop following her and
photographing her young children. She said she stood up for herself and millions of other Americans who are being
victimized by video intruders, people who are actively destroying the right to privacy for all Americans.

When Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michel Douglas got married, a plan was made to keep the paparazzi
away from the wedding. The guests weren’t given the exact location of the party until the last minute.
The day before the reception, special tickets were hand-delivered to the guests, who weren’t allowed
to take cameras inside the event. In spite of this, a photographer managed to take photos of the bride
and groom, which were later sold to Hello! Magazine. The Hollywood couple sued the celebrity
magazine for publishing unauthorised photos of their wedding day, after they had sold exclusive rights to rival OK!

In another famous case the paparazzi were accused of putting lives in danger. Princess Diana's tragic death in a car crash
in Paris and the presence of paparazzis at the crash scene raised concerns about privacy laws and press freedom in
Britain. During her funeral service in Westminster Abbey, Earl Spencer, her brother stated that Princess Diana talked to
him endlessly of getting away from England, mainly because of the treatment that she received at the hands of the
newspapers.

The big question is are they really necessary? Do paparazzi have the right to intrude in people’s lives?

READING.
Read the article about music and mood. Five sentences have been removed. Which sentence A-F fits each
gap (1-5)? There is one extra sentence you do not need to use.

Music and Mood

The helpful effects of music on mental health have been known for thousands of years. Ancient philosophers
from Plato to Confucius sang the praises of music and used it to help deal with stress. (----- 1 -----) Military
bands use music to build confidence and courage. Sporting events provide music to build up enthusiasm.
Modern research carried out by several psychologists supports what most people believe about music benefiting
mood and confidence.
Because of our unique experiences, we develop varied musical tastes and preferences. (----- 2 -----) Babies, for
example, love lullabies. Maternal singing is particularly calming, even if a mother has no formal musical talents.
Certain kinds of music make almost everyone feel worse – even when they say they enjoy it. A study of 144
adults and teenagers who listened to four different kinds of music showed that their emotions changed according
to the music. Grunge music, which has a lot of guitar and drums, for example, led to significant increases in
negative emotions such as sadness, tension, and fatigue across the entire group, even in the teenagers who said
they liked it. In another study, college students reported the opposite when they listened to pop, rock, classical
music, and oldies – songs from more than 15 years ago. They said it helped them feel happier and more
optimistic, friendly, relaxed, and calm.
Everyone who has learned the alphabet knows that it is easier to memorize a list if it is set to music. Scientific
research supports what many people believe – that pairing music with a musical rhythm improves learning and
helps people to remember things. (----- 3 -----) First of all, it can be used as a reward when someone behaves in
the required way. For example, for paying attention to homework for ten minutes, a child can be given the
opportunity to listen to music for five minutes. Second, it can be used to help increase attention to “boring”
academic tasks such as memorization, using songs, rhythms, and dance or movement to enhance the interest of
the lists to be memorized. Instrumental music is great for improving attention and reasoning and for students,
playing background music is not distracting. Lastly, music can be used to help organize activities – one kind of
music for one activity (studying), another for a different activity (eating), and a third kind for going to bed.
Many people find familiar music comforting and calming. In fact, music is so effective in reducing anxiety, it is
often used in by dentists or by doctors just before performing an operation to help patients cope with their
concerns. (----- 4 -----) Any kind of relaxing, calming music can contribute to calmer moods. It is often
combined with cognitive therapy to lower anxiety. Some studies suggest that specially designed music, which
includes certain tones, can help improve symptoms in anxious patients even more than music without these
tones; listening to this music without other distractions (not while driving, cooking, talking, or reading)
promotes the best benefits.
Since ancient times, it has been known that certain kinds of music can help soothe away stress. Calming
background music can help patients in hospital feel less bad-tempered. It can also help elderly patients in
nursing home who are very ill feel calmer. Music, wisely chosen, lowers stress hormone levels. (----- 5 -----)
Knowing that certain kinds of music can reduce stress is one thing. Being attentive in choosing what kind of
music to listen to is another. So, choose your music as carefully as you choose your food and friends.

A Music helps decrease worries in the elderly, new mothers, and children too.
B And in modern times, shopping malls play music to attract customers and keep them in the store.
C This can be used to help children and teenagers with attention problems in several ways.
D However, it’s difficult to explain how exactly it works.
E On the other hand, parents of teenagers know that certain kinds of music, particularly at high volumes, can cause
stress.
F Despite these differences, however, there are some common responses to music.

1 Listen to five people talking about the music they enjoy listening to. Choose from the list (A-F) what each
speaker says about music they listen to. There is one extra letter which you do not need to use.
A I like classical music because it has no words.

B Hip-hop music is great fun. Speaker 1 [ ]

C For me, jazz music is comforting. Speaker 2 [ ]

D If I’m alone, I listen to pop music. Speaker 3 [ ]

File 2 A : Doctor, doctor!

1- READING . Read the text about running

1- Throughout history, humans have always run. Thousands of years ago, they ran to hunt food. In the
1800s, sport became an important part of children’s education. After the modern Olympics began later that
century, athletes became famous. People admired them and wanted to be like them. However, until about
forty years ago, watching running races was more popular than running. Now this has changed. More and
more people are recognising the health benefits of exercise, and are putting on their running shoes!

2- It is a well-known fact that exercise is good for you. Studies have shown that it can help prevent many
types of illness including heart disease and cancer. It will also help you live longer. Studies show that
exercise can add up to 5 years to your life. Of course, there are many ways to exercise. Running is just one
of them. But running may have advantages over other kinds of exercise. For example, one study showed
that people who ran more than 50 miles per week had more HDL cholesterol (good fat) than people who did
not run.

3- If you find you feel better after exercise, there’s a good reason for it. Running makes your body release
feel-good chemicals called endocannabinoids. As a result, no matter how bad you feel, running will cheer
you up. In fact, a 2012 study found that just 30 minutes of running per week for three weeks helped people
sleep better and improved their mood.

4- Of course, as well as benefits, there are some downsides to running. Many runners complain of
problems with their knees. Running on roads is especially damaging. Using a running machine at a gym is
less harmful. If you do not warm up and stretch properly, your muscles will ache. Running is especially risky
in hot weather if people do not drink enough water.

5- If you’re interested in taking up running, it’s important to do it properly, and these tips will help. Keep your
head up. Look straight forward, not down at your feet. Relax your neck and shoulders, hold your body tall
and lift your chest, as this will help you breathe more easily. If you lean forward, you will hurt your lower

Reading. British TV bans Australian tourism ad

British TV bosses have banned a commercial made by Australia’s

tourism industry inviting tourists to Australia.

The ad will not be shown because of the words “bloody hell” in the slogan,
"So where the bloody hell are you?" The question is an invitation for Brits
to take a vacation in Australia. However, the conservative advertising
executives decided it was “bad” language and too rude for British ears. The
colourful commercial highlights all the things Australia is famous for -
lovely beaches, crystal clear ocean, aboriginal dancing and beer. The advert
is part of a $100 million campaign to lure more tourists to Australia.

As a result, the word "bloody" will be cut for the advert when shown on UK TV. Australia’s Tourism Minister
Fran Bailey is shocked by the ban and said it was “comical” because the uncut commercial would still appear in
cinema, in print and online in the UK. She added the regulators are out of touch with British opinion - based on
our research and the initial feedback the British are loving our cheeky sense of humour.''

Tourism executive Scott Morrison is also amazed at the decision and said the ban would only make
the campaign more successful: the ban has given the “visit Australia” campaign a lot of free
publicity. "We thank the UK authorities for the extra free publicity and invite them to have a 'bloody'
good holiday in Australia."Mr Morrison nevertheless, said he hoped the Broadcast Advertising
Clearance Centre (BACC) would reconsider its decision.
