ALUMINIUM DOME ROOF INSTALLATION

Each worker shall complete the necessary general and site-specific safety

orientations required for the particular facility in which the dome will be

installed.

Minimum safety guidelines are as follows:

1. All necessary work permits, job hazard analysis (JHA) or job safety

analysis (JSA) will be completed and on hand prior to the start-up of

the project.

2. Unless otherwise specified, standard safety equipment required

includes hard hats, safety glasses, cut resistant gloves, fire retardant

clothing as required, safety toe footwear, long sleeved shirts and long

pants if FRC clothing is not required, and approved hearing

protection.

3. Full body harnesses with lanyards will be required when working at

heights above 6 feet (1.8 meters).

4. When fall protection is required, it must meet all regulatory

requirements. When walking on the dome, it is strongly

recommended to stay on fully secured batten bars and wear slip

resistant footwear.

5. Tailgate safety meetings should be conducted each day prior to the

start-up of the project to review the daily tasks and safety

precautions.

6. For in-service roof installation, a secondary means of egress and/or

protection for the primary egress should be determined and agreed

upon prior to the start-up of the project.

7. An acceptable escape route must be maintained during the

installation to allow personnel access to the egress areas in case of

an emergency.
8. If a wind girder is present and will be used for access during dome

installation, approved fall protection must be present (e.g. handrail,

belly cable etc.).

9. Environmental conditions must be addressed prior to each day’s

start-up of the project. High winds may cause the dome to sway

during dome construction. Dew, ice, or accumulation of any foreign

substances may create unsafe working surfaces and should be

removed prior to accessing dome roof.

DOME PRE-JOB PLANNING :

The following section highlights factors to consider when deciding whether

the dome will be assembled inside or outside of the tank.

3.1 Assembling the Dome inside of Tank or on a Steel

Floating Roof

1. Must have a means to enter and exit the tank safely.

2. Check tank shell for obstructions (e.g. internal nozzles, piping,

support brackets, etc.) that would impede the vertical path of the

dome during lift.

3. If a door sheet is not present, all panels will need to be lifted and set

inside tank.

4. Lifting equipment may need to be modified to accommodate

elevation changes and to maintain level building conditions on the

floating roof. (E.g. pontoons, extended leg sleeves, etc.)

Lifting Dome with Crane :

1. Must have sufficient area near tank to safely accommodate and

operate crane.

2. Ensure that approved lift plan is followed.

3. Ensure there are no overhead power lines or other overhead

obstructions that could interfere with dome lift.

4. Check future weather conditions prior to lift.

5. Lift should not be performed if wind is more than 12 mph sustained.

6. Allow enough daylight hours to perform the lift and set of dome.

Lifting Dome with Davits :

1. Top of tank must be capable of supporting approved lifting

mechanism.

2. Lifting points and davit positioning must be approved by HMT

engineering.

3. Half-nodes may be required at the tension ring if full-nodes are too

close or come in contact with the tank shell.

Assembling the Dome Outside of Tank:

1. The area should be large enough to accommodate the tank diameter

plus 10’ (3048mm) around the circumference.

2. Ground must be compacted, level, and free of standing water.

3. Must have area available to position crane in close proximity to dome

and tank.

4. Ensure there are no overhead power lines or other overhead

obstacles that could interfere with dome lift.

5. Do not attempt lift if wind speeds exceed 12 mph (19kph).

Lifting Methods

Lifting Dome From Inside the Tank Using Davits

• Must have wind girder large enough to position the davits.

• No obstacles impeding the vertical path of the dome.

• Verify tank shell and wind girder can support loads imposed during

lift.

• Consult HMT construction drawings for lift points.

• When manually lifting the dome a minimum of one person per

lifting device is required.

1. Mark the davit locations at the top of the tank and windgirder per the

lift plan drawing using plumb bob methods previously mentioned in

section 8.1.

2. Attach davits to windgirder and tank shell at each predetermined

location and per the davit attachment drawings. Approved lifting

devices should be attached to davits at this time. (E.g. grip hoist,

chain fall, etc.)

3. Lower lifting device rigging down to tension ring hubs. Attach rigging

at each hub. Ensure the rigging is looped around both the upper and

lower node plates.

4. One at a time take the slack out of the rigging with lifting device and

slowly allow it to take on weight until rigging is taught. Repeat

process at each davit until the dome is completely suspended by the

davits. Utilize a softener where the rigging and aluminum

components touch to minimize damage to rigging and dome

structure.

5. Once suspended, check to ensure the dome is level and adjust as

necessary.

6. With a minimum of one (1) person at each lifting point, begin to raise

the structure in unison. Stop and check frequently to ensure the

dome is level throughout the lift. Stopping at the top of each shell

course is a good point of reference to check for levelness.

7. It is critical that all personnel involved with the lift maintain

communication throughout dome lift.

8. Raise the dome until it is sufficiently above the tank shell to install

support beams and remaining mounting components (See

Illustration 7-3).

9. Begin to attach dome mounting components to tank shell (see

Section 8.3 Attachment to Shell). Once one-half (1/2) or more evenly

spaced anchors are welded/bolted to tank shell and attached to

support beams, the lifting devices can be released and davits

removed.

10. Once the lifting devices/davits have been removed, the remaining

dome support pedestals can be installed. Keep in mind that lifting

devices may need to be left in place on larger domes to help create

space when fitting and attaching remaining mounting components.

Lifting Dome Using Crane (Inside or Out):

Lift or set the dome to a sufficient height above the tank and install support

pedestals. Ensure that dome is properly orientated with the tank. The dome

may be rotated at this time to ensure proper alignment with the tank. When

performing a crane lifting from inside the tank, support beams will need to

be installed after lifting dome above the tank and prior to attaching mounting

components. Once one-half (1/2) or more evenly spaced anchors are

welded/bolted to tank and attached to support beams, the crane rigging can

be released.

• Lift Plan must be approved by HMT prior to lift.

• HMT engineering will provide the lift point locations on construction

drawings.

• If lifting dome from outside of the tank, support beams and slide

brackets should be attached prior to lift.

• Do not attempt lift if wind speeds exceed 12 mph (19kph).

• Consult crane provider for size of crane required.

Lifting Dome on a Steel Floating Roof Using Quad-pods/Tri-

pods :

1. The quad-pods/tri-pods should be positioned around the next to last

ring of the dome roof. Positioning will vary depending on the type of

pontoons and other obstructions. Extended legs may be required to

achieve sufficient clearance above tank shell.

2. The floating roof must be at highest possible position when using this

method.

3. Using quad-pods/tri-pods, lift the dome uniformly and level until the

dome is sufficiently above the tank shell to install mounting

components.
