Respiratory Medication

Antihistamines (used for Seasonal Rhinitis)


1st gen: Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) 2nd gen: Fexofenadine (Allegra); Loratadine
(Claritin)
- selectively block the effects of histamine at the histamine-1 receptor sites, decreasing the
allergic response.
- Antihistamines are used for the relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial
allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, uncomplicated urticaria, and angioedema.
- Relief of nausea and vomiting associated with motion sickness.
Side effects: Drowsiness, sedation, drying of the GI mucous membranes, GI upset, nausea,
dysuria, itching.
Implementation:
- Administer drug on an empty stomach, 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals, to increase
the absorption.
- Caution the patient to avoid alcohol while taking these drugs because serious sedation
can occur.

Bronchodilators (used for Antiasthmatics)


Beta2 Agonists: Albuterol (Proventil) – short acting acute attacks; Salmeterol (Serevent)- long
acting for chronic conditions, taken w/ corticosteroids; Anticholinergics (Ipratropium
[Atrovent])
- binds to beta-2 receptors in lungs; relax bronchi smooth muscle and dilates airways
- asthma, COPD, bronchitis (low air flow through lungs
Side effects: palpitations, dysrhythmias, HTN, nervousness, restless, tremors

Nasal Decongestants (used for Sinusitis)


ephedrine (Pretz-D)
oxymetazoline (Afrin, Allerest)
phenylephrine (Coricidin)
tetrahydrazoline (Tyzine)
xylometazoline (Otrivin)
Topical Steroid nasal decongestants:
Beclomethasone (Baclofen)

Mucolytics (used for COPD_


Acetylcysteine (Mucomyst)
- Patients may be suffering from conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
(COPD), cystic fibrosis, pneumonia, or tuberculosis.

Expectorants
Guaifenesin (Mucinex)
- They are used for the symptomatic relief of respiratory conditions characterized by a dry,
nonproductive cough.
