B. Sc. SEMESTER I
EXAMINATION, Feb., 2021
Subject : PHYSICS
Paper Name : Mechanics
Time : Three Hours ] [ Maximum Marks : 70
Note : Question paper is divided into two Sections
A and B. Attempt both Sections. Answer
questions as per instructions given.
Section—A
(Short Answer Type Questions)
Note : Attempt any five questions in about 150
words each. Each question carries 6
marks. (5×6=30)
1. Explain curl and divergence of a vector field
with examples. Show that :
⃗ ∙ (∇
∇ ⃗ × F⃗) = 0
for the vector field F⃗ = 𝑦𝑦𝑧𝑧 2 𝑖𝑖̂ + 𝑥𝑥𝑥𝑥𝑗𝑗̂ + 𝑦𝑦𝑦𝑦𝑘𝑘.

2. State Newton’s laws of motion. An electron

starting from rest has a velocity v = at, where
a = 3 m/s2 and t is the time. What will be the
distance covered by body in first 2 seconds ?
3. State work-energy theorem. Show that the
work done by a conservative force around a
close path is always zero.
4. Define angular acceleration of a particle.
Establish a relation between angular
acceleration and linear acceleration. An object
moves at constant speed of 9.0 m/s in a circular
path of radius 1.5 m. What is the angular
acceleration of the object ?
5. What are Kepler’s laws of planetary motion ?
The Earth’s distance from the Sun is
1.496 × 108 km and time-period of Earth’s
revolution around it is 1 year. Hence calculate
T2
the ratio .

6. When a particle moves under a central force,
prove that the angular momentum of a particle
is necessarily conserved. Explain why the
particle moves in a plane that passes through
the centre of the field.

7. Distinguish between streamline flow and

turbulent flow of liquid. Calculate Reynold’s
number, if a fluid having viscosity of
0.4 Ns/m2 and relative density of 900 kg/m3
through a pipe of diameter 20 m with a
velocity of 2.5 m/s.
8. State the fundamental postulates of special
theory of relativity. Show that the velocity of
light is the ultimate speed of particles.
Calculate the velocity of a clock when it seems
to be slowed down by 1 minute in 1 hour.
9. Two electrons, each of velocity 0.8 c, move
towards each other. Calculate the relative
velocity of one electron with respect to the
other.
10. Show that the limiting values of the Poisson’s
ratio are –1 and 0.5.
Section—B
(Long Answer Type Questions)
Note : Attempt any four questions in detail. Each
question carries 10 marks. (4×10=40)
1. Describe gradient of a scalar field in cartesian
coordinates. Explain its physical significance.
Prove that :
⃗ = ϕ∇
⃗ϕA
∇ ⃗ × A⃗ − A⃗ × ∇
⃗ϕ .

2. What is a rocket ? Why a multistage rocket is

necessary ? Establish a relation for the final
velocity of rocket and show that the rocket
speed is twice the exhaust speed when
M0 = M𝑒𝑒 2 .
3. Discuss conservative and non-conservative
forces with suitable examples. Show that the
curl of gravitational and electromagnetic force
is always zero.
4. State and prove the theorem of parallel axes.
Hence derive the moment of inertia of a
rectangular bar about an axis passing through
one of its ends and through its centre.
5. Explain the following terms in greater detail :
(i) Weightlessness in a freely falling elevator
(ii) Global Positioning System (GPS)
(iii) Psychological effects on astronauts
6. Define coefficient of viscosity of a liquid.
Describe the Poiseuille’s method for measuring
the coefficient of viscosity of a liquid. Derive
the formula with its two correction terms and
their physical significance.
[5] BPH–C-101

7. Obtain Einstein’s formula for addition of

velocities. With the help of Lorentz
transformation, deduce an expression for the
apparent time interval, measured in a frame of
reference that has a velocity v relative to the
watch used for measurement of time.
8. Explain the terms Strain and Stress in brief.
Prove that a shearing stress is equivalent to a
linear tensile stress and an equal compression
stress mutually at right angles.
