QUESTION 1 [6 MARKS]

A committee of 5 people is to be chosen from 6 men and 4 women. In how many ways can
this be done if:

a) there must be 3 men and 2 women on the committee,


(2 marks)
b) there must be more men than women on the committee,
(2 marks)

c) there must be 3 men and 2 women, and one particular woman refuses to be on the
committee with one particular man?

QUESTION 2 [7 MARKS]
a) The random variable X is normally distributed with mean 79 and variance 144.
Find P(64 < X < 96).
(3 marks)

b) The random variable X is normally distributed with mean µ and variance 𝜎 2 . Given that
P(X > 58.37) = 0.02 and P(X < 41.85) = 0.01, find µ and 𝜎 2 .

The probability distribution of random variables X is given below:

QUESTION 4 [8 MARKS]

Over a long period of time, accidents happened on a stretch of road at random at a rate of
3 per month.

a) Find the probability that more than three (3) accidents occurred in a three-month
period.

(3 marks)

b) Using a suitable approximation, find the probability that more than forty (40) accidents
occurred in a given year.

From company records, a manager knows that the probability that a defective article is
produced by a particular production line is 0.032.

A random sample of 10 articles is selected from the production line.

a) Find the probability that exactly two (2) of them are defective.
(3 marks)
On another occasion, a random sample of 100 articles is taken.

b) Using a suitable approximation, find the probability that fewer than four (4) of them are
defective.
(3 marks)
At a later date, a random sample of 1000 is taken.

c) Using a suitable approximation, find the probability that more than forty-two (42) are
defective.
(4 marks)

a) Use the Kruskal’s algorithm to find the minimum spanning tree for the given network.

a) State the number of solutions in the following system of linear equation, justifying your
answer.

i. 3𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 4

b) Use Cramer’s rule, solve the below system:

a) Prove that (A ∪ B) ′ = A ′ ∩ B ′.
(3 marks)

b) A relation R is defined as

R = (1,1), (1,2), (1,3), (2,1), (2,2), (3,1), (3,3)}.

Verify whether R is an equivalent relation, showing all your workings and justifications.

c) The function f is defined as 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 − 𝑥 2 + 2 , x < 1

i. Verify whether 𝑓(𝑥) is an injective function.

ii. Write an expression, without simplifying, for 𝑓 2 (x).

QUESTION 10 [14 MARKS]

A manufacturer stores drums of chemicals. During storage, evaporation takes place. A


random sample of 10 drums was taken and the time in storage, x weeks, and the evaporation
loss, y ml, are shown in the table below.

a) On graph paper, draw a scatter diagram to represent these data.

(3 marks)

b) Give a reason to support fitting a regression model of the form y = a + bx to these data.

(1 mark)

c) Find, to 2 decimal places, the value of a and the value of b.


(You may use Σx2 = 1352, Σy2 = 53 112 and Σxy = 8354.)

d) Give an interpretation of the value of b.
(1 mark)

e) Using your model, predict the amount of evaporation that would take place after

I. 19 weeks,

ii. 35 weeks.

f) Comment, with a reason, on the reliability of each of your predictions.
