Important Note:
1. You have 2 hours and 15 minutes to complete this exam. If you commence the exam late
the exam will still close at the set time.
2. This is a Moodle exam quiz which will automatically be submitted at the end of the allowed
exam time so please manage your time carefully and complete the questions required
within the given time.
4. This examination consists of 6 questions and is marked out of 50 marks. It represents 50%
of the total assessment in this unit.
1.1 To estimate how much to spend on advertising, Alexico Pty Ltd needs to know the average
advertising expenses done by the competitors per month. A sample of 50 competitors was
randomly selected and draw the results to be used in budgeting for next year.
1.2 In a sample study done using the following data set of customer satisfaction survey scores 0-30
on a new toy drone, a descriptive summary is drawn.
a. Determine the type and scale of this variable ‘Customer satisfaction survey’. (0.5 mark)
Numerical / Ratio
b. Calculate and fill in the blanks (shaded) of the above descriptive summary statistics table. Show
your workings below. (2.5 marks)
Please use the table above
I. Describe the shape of the data for the variable ‘Customer satisfaction survey score’ and
explain how have you come to this decision? (0.5 mark)
Mean = 12.5 Median = 12 This means that Mean > Median
Therefore the distribution is positive
Skewness is 0.81 which is a positive value. This means that the distribution is positive
II. Specify if there are any unusual values in the data set. Provide reasons (0.5 mark)
Lower fence is 5.5 > Minimum is 4 This means that 4 is an unusual value
Upper fence is 19.5 < Maximum is 24 This means that 24 is an unusual value
d. Do you think the sample data used in part (a) is a suitable size for inferential Statistics, Explain?
(0.5 mark)
We cannot conclude that the sample size is sufficient as we don’t have enough information given
about the population size. A rule of thumb can state that a sufficient sample size would be
approximately 10% of the population as long as it doesn’t exceed 1000.
1.2
e. Based on your results from Exhibit 1.2.2., write a brief report in plain language about the variable
‘Customer satisfaction survey scores’, highlighting the most important characteristics. (3 marks)
Mean: 12.5
On average the customer satisfaction score on the new toy drone is 12.5
Median: 12
50% of the customer satisfaction scores are less than 12 and 50% of the scores are greater
than 12
Maximum: 24
The highest satisfaction score was 24
Minimum: 4
The lowest satisfaction score was 4
Q1: 10.75
25% of the satisfaction scores were below 10.75.
75% of the satisfaction scores were above 10.75
Q3: 14.25
25% of the scores were above 14.25
IQR: 3.5
The range of the middle 50% of the scores was 3.5
2.1 Toyota Australia has recently conducted a survey to analyse customer preference for two types
of their cars in 2018. As an initial step, they collected the following information from a sample of
550 customers.
Preference of
Female Male Total
cars
Toyota Prado 70 213 283
Toyota Yaris 150 117 267
Total 220 330 550
a. Based on the information given complete the row percentage cross tabulation below (up to two
decimal places). (3 Marks)
Out of the two variables, recognise the ‘Explanatory’ (Independent) variable and ‘Response’
(Dependent) variable. (1 mark)
𝑋−µ 500−410
Z=
≤ 30
= 3 (0.5 marks)
Use the Table E.14 given in Moodle to find the corresponding value for 3.00
= 0.49865 + 0.5 = 0.99865
2.2
𝑋−µ 300−410
Z= = = -3.67 (0.5 marks)
30
Use the Table E.14 given in Moodle to find the corresponding value for -3.67 = 0.49988 (0.5 marks)
0.49987 + 0.5 = 0.99988
Probability that demand will exceed 300 units, or P(X > 300) = 0.99988 (0.5 marks)
OR
Probability that demand will be between 300 and 500, or P(300 < Z < 500): = 0.99852
2.3
a. A consumer group is asked to run a customer satisfaction survey about the Toyota customer
service. They have picked 50 customers and found, 32/50 (64%) satisfied with the service they
received. Construct a 95% confidence interval for the true proportion of customers who are
satisfied with the service.
2. Find Z-score:
95% confidence: z = 1.96
𝑝(1−𝑝) 0.64×(1−0.64)
𝑝 ± Z ∝/2√ = 0.64 ± 1.96 × √
𝑛 50
b. If the consumer group was to conduct another survey in the future, what sized sample would be
required if they wish to have a margin of error of at most 5% and maintain a 90% confidence
level with an estimated population proportion of 64%?
1.1 Management of Swan Tyres, a tyre manufacturing company is concerned about the variation in
tyre sales, and suspects that the below average advertising in regional areas may play a vital
part in this problem. They have generated the regression output below.
a. Using the regression model in the summary output, predict the Tyre sales for the following
scenario:
Competitor impact rate = 47, Regional advertising expense (in ‘000) = $80, Tyre price = $300 (3
marks)
Sales ($) = 102.51 + (0.003 x Competitor impact) + (0.953 x Regional advertising expense) +
(0.446 x Tyre prices)
Sales = 102.51 + (0.003 x47) + (0.953 x 80) + (0.446 x 300) = 312.691 OR $312,691
3.1
d. Referring to the given regression analysis, do you think that R2 is a better measure than adjusted
R2 to comment on the explanatory power? Provide reasons. (1 mark)
If we include any additional independent variable(s) to the model, R2 will increase regardless
of whether the variable is important/significant to the model. But the Adjusted R2 takes the
number of independent variables into account. So adjusted R2 is a better measure.
A retailer of toy cars wants to know how many damaged toys are there in a delivery of 500 ‘Hot
wheels’ toy cars. A random sample of 50 toys were checked.
Based on previous history, the retailer claims that his expectation is to see at least 20% of the toy
cars would be damaged.
You are asked to use the ‘6 Step’ process to test the retailer’s claim (or “hypothesis”) that at least
20% will be damaged.
c. Step 1: Write down in symbols and words the null and alternative hypotheses. (2 marks)
H0 : π ≥ 20% (Proportion of all toy cars that will damage is at least 20%)
H1 : π < 20% (Proportion of all cars that will damage is less than 20%)
c. Step 3: Using a level of significance (α) of 5%, determine the critical value(s). (1 mark)
α = 5%; Critical Value of Z =-1.645 (From Confidence Intervals/Hypothesis Tests: Z ScoresFile
in Moodle)
Calculation area:
0.22 − 0.20
= +0.3536
√0.20(1 − 0.20)
50
Decision: (1 mark)
Since the Test Statistic (z=+0.3536) is greater than the critical value of z(-1.645), DO NOT
REJECT H0.
Conclusion: (2 marks)
The retailer’s claim that at least 20% of the toy cars would be damaged seems to be correct.
