Question 1 (20 Marks)

A telephone line has the following parameters:

R = 40  m-1, G = 400 S m-1, L = 0.2 H m-1, C = 0.5 nF m-1.

i. If the line operates at 10 MHz, calculate the characteristic (15 marks)

impedance Zo and velocity u.

ii. Determine how far the signal needs to travel (in meters) I (5 marks)
in the line, before the voltage drops by 30 dB.

Question 2 (30 Marks)

At 50 MHz, a lossy dielectric material is characterized by  =

3.6o,  = 2.1o and  = 0.08 S m-1. If Es = 6e-x az V m-1.
Calculate the following parameters: -

i. . (12 marks)

ii. . (3 marks)

iii. μ. (3 marks)

iv. . (4 marks)

v. Hs. (8 marks)

Question 3 (20 Marks)

An antenna, connected to a 150- lossless line, produces a

standing wave ratio of 2.6. If measurements indicate that
voltage maxima are 120 cm apart and that the last maximum
is 40 cm from the antenna, calculate:

i. The operating frequency. (4 marks)

ii. The antenna impedance. (4 marks)

iii. The reflection coefficient. Assume that u = c. You need (12 marks)
to answer this question on a Smith Chart.

Question 4 (30 Marks)

(a) A half-wave dipole fed by a 50- transmission line, calculate (10 marks)
the reflection coefficient and the standing wave ratio.

(b) A 1-m-long car radio antenna in the AM frequency of 1.5 (10 marks)
MHz. How much current is required to transmit 4 W of
power?
(c) The transmitting and receiving antennas are separated by a (10 marks)
distance of 200 λ and have directive gains of 25 and 18dB
respectively. If 5mW of power is to be received, calculate the
minimum transmitted power.
